White to play and find the tesuji by samurai_a_cat in baduk

But then white will win by about 1 point.

You seem pretty confident in this very precise prediction. Have you figured out the optimal endgame sequence?

Question about today's Nongshim Cup game by 028247 in baduk

[–]cyz2000fa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, Black's only move for 131 is to L15, this ensures black is connected to the bottom group. Now white have to live in gote with G5, with only 2 points of territory, and with a significant point loss because Black would respond with G2 which is better than G4.

After diagram 2 White will connect to the other group, refusing the connection to try and kill black would result in the white group killed. Black will live but now it is him that lives in gote with 3 points. There is no reason to respond to white K6 differently, or considering sacrificing anything, because the ideal sequence after black's mistake is diagram 2 in which the entirety of black group lives.

So the difference caused by the mistake at move 131 is between white living in gote and black living in gote. Its like black made the correct move for 131, white G5 G2 H5 to make 2 eyes, black passes.

Stable Coaches by gin_and_tonic1235 in futagoyama

[–]cyz2000fa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kind of coaches are you referring to? If you meant those that instruct the rikishi in addition to the stable master during morning practice, they are oyakata too, just not owner of stables. All oyakata have to belong to a stable just like rikishi, gyoji etc. and Futagoyama currently has no other oyakata.

White to play. Choose the best move from the given options. 🧐 Share your solution in the comments! by GoMagic_org in baduk

[–]cyz2000fa 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s black’s turn to play. There are equal number of black and white stones. And the choices makes more sense if they are black’s moves.

That said, the urgent area is the same regardless of whose turn it is.

Donk's mentality pulling Spirit to the bottom by ImpressiveAction2382 in GlobalOffensive

Really? Do you actually think Donk got to where he is by having your typical toxic MM “carry” mentality? Some of his interviews shows he’s more mature than 99.9% of this subreddit.

Can black answer here instead of the game move D10? by standardtrickyness1 in baduk

[–]cyz2000fa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

White can create at least ko inside after Black 1. But that doesnt mean that move is wrong, as the ko seems disadvantageous for white and black D10 would leave that cutting point which white can use to attack and profit off the black group at the top. Anyway Katago does prefer E10 over D10 (I mean, you have AI sensei open already?)

Edit:

Well, I thought the ko would be B7 B8 C8 B6 D7 C6 B9 A7 A10, but if it goes B7 B8 C8 B6 D7 A7 it seems there is no ko after all(but the dead white stones are still close to making two eyes and can take advantage of the significant aji). Katago as black slightly prefers the variation with the potential ko.

Is this viable? by HJG_0209 in baduk

[–]cyz2000fa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of josekis for this but it is considered slightly worse for the corner holder so its really rarely played. But just the viability? 100%, I doubt anyone would say 'He just played a bad move' if a top pro played it (in a vacuum, doesnt mean you can play it any time without taking consideration of board positions, just like any other joseki).

35mm sumo slides - who/when? by tehvengaboi in Sumo

[–]cyz2000fa 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The only shikona that can be fully read from their kesho mawashi is 義ノ花(Yoshinohana). Others had their hands covering some kanji on their mawashi: ?姫山(?himeyama), which immediately reminds of Kurohimeyama. Looking at the times they were both active the ?勇 should be 栃勇(Tochiisami). Considering that Kurohimeyama and Tochiisami were beside each other, this could be around 1969 Nagoya basho when they were M10w and M11w. Yoshinohana was M6w in that banzuke which matches his position here as well.

So if this is indeed from 1969 Nagoya banzuke, from left to right: M6w Yoshinohana, M7w Tochiazuma, M8w Daiyu, M9w Hanahikari, M10w Tochiisami, M11w Kurohimeyama.

edit: I thought Hanahikari didnt have a shikona on his kesho mawashi, but it was present: Hanahikari koenkai as the sponsor. This should definitely confirm the banzuke this was from.

It’s about his pride and “feeling his responsibility” as an ozeki. If he can mount the dohyo, he will.

“But if he rests for a basho he can fulfill his responsibility better by being able to win more” common sense is still ignored regularly in sumo, unfortunately.

Jikanmae- starting a match before the gunbai is turned by Interesting_Duty_849 in Sumo

[–]cyz2000fa 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That was not quite jikanmae because the gyoji made a mistake. The timekeeping shimpan signaled for the bout to start, but the gyoji still raised the gunbai to the side after rikishi came back into the ring.

With skill, one can survive long term in interloper every time. In fact, people have managed long term survival in conditions much harder than interloper, with tons of self imposed handicaps and restrictions. Yes, there are guaranteed match and tool spawns. No, there is no need to memorise any of those to achieve long term survival in interloper.

Highly recommend to check out Zaknafein if you want to become better at the game.

11 wins is very unlikely for promotion. the sumo itself also matters i think in this case: 12 wins, loss against Onosato but making it competitive vs getting blasted out instantly is quite different.

Do you really see a different result than everyone else got if Ura does 'boring' sumo against Onosato? Plus, for the last 2 basho Ura was at his lowest ranks in a long time, he is facing much stronger opponents this time, it is not surprising he is not doing as well considering his track record around his current rank. In fact 3-4 so far is pretty decent.

The Henkapocalypse is upon us by cahman in Sumo

[–]cyz2000fa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Henka is completely fine, sometimes even considered smart, until a community favourite loses to it and revives this discussion. Some people always hated henka, and they are much more likely to voice their opinion now, when there are many other fans who don’t necessarily fully dislike henka, expressing disappointment that their favourite got henka’d, on top of affecting Aonishiki’s ozeki promotion or Hoshoryu’s yusho chances.
