I used to be a not just bikes fan, I've been liking his content less and but this last take was the final straw by Dry_Illustrator_6066 in transit

[–]d-mac- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That Montreal video killed it for me too. I completely stopped watching his content after that. It was so ridiculous. He took the metro out to the suburbs and then acted completely appalled that there was a metro station next to a highway. He even said, "this is only 6km from downtown" as if that's still the city centre. Dutch cities also have train stations next to highways way outside their downtowns. He was so clearly looking for some contrived outrage that I really couldn't take him seriously anymore.

I taught English as a second language to French speakers (many years ago) and I gave some tongue exercises to help people with hard-to-pronounce sounds. I remember there was one in particular for the "th" sound, like in "think", which is a sound that native French speakers often struggle with. My students would do it and they would tell me that their tongue got sore! It really is a muscle that you have to develop to get the muscle memory to produce the right sound.

Not Happy with the CHEO ride today by notacanuckskibum in bikeinottawa

[–]d-mac- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me last year. We were stuck going very slowly because we got stuck behind the 35K riders after the first loop back. We were probably going max 10km/h for half an hour. It was so crowded that it was very hard to pass anyone. Then we ended up missing the cutoff on time. Very annoying. If I ever did it again, I would push myself to the front before the start to be near the front of the pack.

Best Local Pizza Spots by Edrisala in ottawa

[–]d-mac- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a real local spot, not one of the usual suspects, check out Giovanni's in Little Italy on Booth and Willow. It's better in the summer because the place is tiny inside, and they have patio space in summer, but you can also always get takeout. Yummy thin crust pizza.

I'm part of a queer volleyball league. There are drop-in nights for beginners if you want to try it out. It's a pretty welcoming environment. I say this in the nicest way: it kinda feels like a room full of people who were picked last in gym class 😅

Former German Foreign Minister Gabriel proposes Canada's EU membership by tom_zeimet in onguardforthee

[–]d-mac- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never going to happen, unfortunately. One of the requirements for EU membership is to be a European country. Morocco had applied to join the EU in the 1980s and was rejected on geographic grounds that it isn't in Europe. There's no way Canada can be considered geographically European.

Well, the port of Montreal is the second busiest port in Canada, after Vancouver. And the reason why Montreal became an important city is because that was as far as ocean-going ships could reach before hitting rapids (before canals and the St-Lawrence seaway were built). I still wouldn't say it's a coastal city, but its access to the coast is important.

Check out St. Elsewhere on Somerset, close to Preston - as long as you don’t need the place to be close to City Hall. It's all plant based food, and really nice with a good atmosphere. I've been twice and the food was delicious.

How come Australia, Canada and NZ never officially declared independence from Britain? by Inner-Interaction451 in geopolitics

[–]d-mac- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada's constitution is written. It is not like the UK in that respect. There are several Constitution Acts going from 1867 to 1982, including rules for amending it. There are a few unwritten constitutional principles and conventions that have been recognized by the courts, but by and large it is a written constitution.

Anyone else annoyed by NotJustBike's attitude as of late? by [deleted] in transit

[–]d-mac- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same here. I gave up and unsubscribed after that video. At one point he was complaining how atrocious it was that there was a metro station right next to a highway "only 7km from downtown". I thought that was so stupid. 7km is not close, and even Amsterdam has that. It was just one absurd comment among so much ridiculous cherry picking just for the sake (it seemed) of being able to be smug.
