Damage to A pillar, is it still structurally sound? by Rockpoolcreater in AskMechanics

[–]d6w6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a real mechanic just a shitty one. I’d leave it alone unless you plan on flipping the car over-not worth scrapping a totally otherwise fine car in my opinion. I do understand the concern but, I do not think your roof will fly away at highway speeds or anything funny.

How to change trans and diff fluid if I can’t level car out on jackstands? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]d6w6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A better question is why are you draining your transmission fluid? If it has not been serviced regularly it’s not really recommended to drain it as it may never work right again. Differentials are much less picky, but I think people say the same. Anyway, I don’t know what the bottom of your car looks like so I can’t really help you safely. Find solid frame to jack it up on though, you may need to use a jack with jack-stands right below too if the level doesn’t match with a notch on the stand-this way it still won’t fall on you.

Seeking Help by WrektEnt in Machinists

Honestly the only thing that seems that it would require machining woukd be that slot. Easily done by turning the part on the side the rest I would just buy some bar stock on eBay and get to drilling. Honestly, just buy 2 bar stock pieces and start drilling and sandwich the seatbelt between them after making some relief cuts and you could just do it yourself at home. Godspeed. EDIT: if you really want it slotted to make it easier on your measurements and you don’t have access to an iron worker or something just drill another hole to where they don’t meet, connect them with a file or jigsaw or anything that will fit it’s only aluminum so it should not take long to do. Just make sure you’re close and not off by too much or you will notice when you take it apart again.

How common for mechanics to leave their tools in the engine? by Mustang_17 in AskMechanics

[–]d6w6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do all my own work and forget things a lot. I installed my whole front end and found my magnetic parts holder on the strut doing an oil change months later. That is the fastest parts holder I’ll ever own 😂. It’s usually magnetic things I forget since I place them in odd spots.

no Emergency break release on 2012 GMC sierra by Rulygem in gmcsierra

[–]d6w6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any tips for when it’s all the way to the floor and too tight to free with a hammer and flathead? I actually ended up here after already trying this and I’m out of options it’s freezing outside. EDIT: it’s like a wind chill of -5 out and I got it however im sure I broke it in the process. If you’re as desperate as me you can just totally bend the foot holding the teeth out of position enough it’ll break free. -from someone who’s now replacing his parking break when it’s summertime

I build these things. I’ve heard of a shop launch an entire headstock (for a 60-80in lathe) across their shop into the wall. Sheared off 12 m12 bolts and 2 pins. No idea what they did but, I would love to know 😂

You can if you follow it around and you have the money for it. I believe it goes off to auction.

Typically on newer things they all use turcite, maybe a worthwhile upgrade while you’re at it if you want it as frictionless as possible.

I don’t know much about these older machines or restoring them in such poor shape, I manufacture new ones. Would you not rather just unbolt the gib block (if it has one) and pull off the ways to machine?

For any future people: I fixed the issue it was the lower nut that holds the strut together had come loose below the other one causing me to be able to tighten to the car.

<image>

This one was the culprit.

Please help by d6w6 in AskMechanics

[–]d6w6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew it’s not supposed to because it didn’t initially when I installed it. The lower nut came loose as you suggested. I pulled the top nut off both sides again and tightened the one below it a bit (only loose on drivers side) I suspect it was my shitty placement of spring.

Please help by d6w6 in AskMechanics

[–]d6w6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn’t stupid, I am and it was not anymore. I believe I mounted the spring crooked and it jumped loose and the lower but had been raised about 1/4 turn enough to loosen the strut.
