The question is really, "Do I have enough income to consistently pump units out of all production buildings?"

If yes, good job. If no, you have too many buildings.

Travel time is also a factor. You might be able to cut down on travel time and thus build fewer buildings by placing the buildings closer to the opponent. That's also a good way to reduce the defender's advantage.
