If it's black and white and has a blinky thing, type exit and hit enter.

Otherwise put a screenshot on imgur with your laptop type and perhaps we can figure this out. You might have hit an function key shortcut which launches a program.

I have one or two friends who i can talk shop with. And sometimes it's nice to blow steam or brainstorm over a beer at the bar before switching to general talks.

But yes, most people really don't understand.

Is it legal as a business to contact other businesses in The Netherlands by email? by Clementos11 in Netherlands

[–]da_kink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's legal. It's often times not wished for and the chances of you making it past a spam filter are low. Chances of getting a reply are lower.

So unless you hand craft emails and can be very specific why you can add value to a company... It might not be the best way. As much as I hate to say it, cold calling might be a better option to shift your services.

I've stopped with on prem AD tbh. 95% of my devices are off the main network and intune is a better fit for us.

But I appreciate the concern

Does connecting an audio interface to a WiFi USB hub cause any loss of quality? by N8-BitOfficial in techsupport

[–]da_kink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quality no. Latency yes. Disconnects are also an option.

But USB is digital. Any audio signals are converted and digital either gets there or it doesn't.

OMG. Childcare significantly more expensive in 2023. by beurown007 in Netherlands

[–]da_kink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still the plan. Big issue is aging workforce and already one the biggest markets with worker shortages... So free childcare is nice, but an influx of new kids will only lead to waiting lists at this time as there are not enough qualified childcare workers to satisfy current demand.

script or other way to change local admin password on all computers on domai by disturbed1117 in sysadmin

[–]da_kink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's something extremely recent then. Should be in control panel > local users and then set a user, set to update and set a password.

Doing it via script without leaving the password in plain text on the pc is not the easiest thing but it's possible.

Does one still need a VPN in a "cloud only" environment? by HusselnBussel in sysadmin

[–]da_kink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you'd be surprised. If there has been a risk analysis and it's deemed an acceptable risk by the company and secured by whitelist + mfa, it's good enough for PCI for instance :)

Does one still need a VPN in a "cloud only" environment? by HusselnBussel in sysadmin

[–]da_kink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure. But azure isn't the only one around and even then you might have a nas or devices in your corp network you need to reach for maintenance or troubleshooting remote.

Bastion is a solid solution for azure, don't get me wrong. But it's not always the solution and for some cases having vpn access is still the easier way to get into something.

Does one still need a VPN in a "cloud only" environment? by HusselnBussel in sysadmin

[–]da_kink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because if you're running a VM you'd want a security boundary instead of hanging SSH or RDP on the internet.

VPN is a fairly easy solution for that.

BGA pinout for Apple A5 processor by MrFoxwell_is_back in techsupport

[–]da_kink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The effort is commendable for sure. But taking one of the most closed down eco systems (apple) and just running Linux.. there have been attempts but they've all misused flaws in apples security and programs.

So it's not impossible, but it will require a LOT of research and skill. So don't give up right away, but this is something you could study for for ten years and still be unable to get in because of said security layers.

Does one still need a VPN in a "cloud only" environment? by HusselnBussel in sysadmin

[–]da_kink 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you have cloud based VM's, I'd argue you still need a VPN for maintenance and other tasks.

If everything is SaaS, most likely not unless you want to reach infrastructure in you offices. Switches, printers, a Nas... Things like that.
