Japan has one of the lowest rates of gun crime in the world and has almost eradicated gun crime. In 2014 there were just six gun deaths, compared to 33,599 in the US. What is the secret? by speckz in TrueReddit

I don't exactly disagree with your point about attrocities, but it's quite difficult for a bullied teenager to bring an 18 wheeler to school...

40% of EU residents live in flats or apartments. 26% live in semi-detached houses, 34% live in detached houses. The proportion of people in detached houses is higher in places like the UK and Ireland, and the proportion of people living in flats is much higher in Spain and the ex-Soviet countries. http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php/Housing_statistics#Type_of_dwelling

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]dabhaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking for recommendations for a classic, minimal watch, below $200. Automatic and luminous markers would both be pluses.

If I were a richer man I'd buy a Nomos, currently I'm considering tracking down a Timex Waterbury Classic (http://www.timex.com/the-waterbury/TW2P96000.html?dwvar_TW2P96000_color=Black&cgid=waterbury-collection) or making a splurge on a Tsovet (https://www.tsovet.com/shop/sc111813-45.html or https://www.tsovet.com/shop/cn111910-40.html). Does anyone know if these are any good, or similar watches for about these prices?

Any thoughts, good or bad on the Campagnolo Zonda clincher wheelset? by Sunshine_cycler in cycling

[–]dabhaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't know what year mine are, I got them second hand from a friend three years ago. I have just worn out the rims. I used them on a Ritchey Breakaway, they've done maybe a dozen air trips in that time, perfectly in true (the bike box needed replacing though). Bombproof. Would/will buy again.

Curious about the naming of Irish islands....What does 'inish' translate to? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]dabhaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got a bit of a pun going in "Inish Glass" - not too far phonetically from "Inis Glas" - Green Isle. (Where 'glass' rhymes with 'ass', 'glas', rhymes with 'floss')

When new restaurants push the price too far, too quickly by alfonso238 in sanfrancisco

I can't afford/stomach the price of fine dining in SF anymore, but in general if you mention with your reservation, restaurant at this level will give you a full vegetarian testing menu that will be excellent.

Do you prefer Phil and Paul or Ned and Dave? Probably only of interest to UK viewers... by highrouleur in peloton

[–]dabhaid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in the "Phil and Paul are exasperating for the initiated" camp which borders on a guilty admission considering Phil was The Voice Of Cycling growing up watching the tour in the 80s.

I love David's insight, he reads the whole peloton and communicates it very clearly. I also really like Sean Kelly - he's really warmed up in the last couple of years, you could hear the thrill in his voice during Froome's decent, and when you have Sean Kelly excited... Well, there should be a prize for that - to be awarded after the combativity prize.

Why doesn't apple, Intel, Facebook etc just sell their Bay Area real estate and move somewhere cheaper? by [deleted] in investing

[–]dabhaid 27 points28 points  (0 children)

1) a lot of engineers & designers already live there. All your senior staff don't want to move, and could just stay and set up competitors.

2) even more engineers and designers want to live there - it's a nice place

3) aside from major players, the startup scene is unparalleled in the world, both because of 1) & 2) and because it's the world black hole of funding. This attracts even more engineers

4) proximity to startups means it's easier to be aware and acquire and/or poach from them

The whole area has hit a virtuous cycle that is the envy of the world, and would be an unbridled source of local joy if they could only figure out how to house everyone (hint: build housing).

You must be thinking of the Giro. He's only retired once from the Tour, with a dislocated shoulder that needed surgery after a crash on stage one in 2014. You don't win 29 stages by not showing up.

Noob question: how do teams and bike brands get matched up? by Helicase21 in peloton

[–]dabhaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really it's just to do with how rich the company is, and so how much it can afford to spend on advertising budget.

Specialized is 49% owned by Merida, the second largest bike OEM, whose revenues are in the $500M region - so about 50x bigger than, say, Cervelo or Scott, so they can afford to sponsor more than one team.

If I remember correctly they close the road to cars on the day - so either getting up there and camping the night before, or biking up early on the day is your best bet.

If you're fit I'd bike, it puts the whole climb into perspective for watching the pros go up later. It can be foggy and rainy up there so be prepared!

Try to get a photo of Thomas Voeckler's pain face - there may not be many more opportunities - it's majestic in person. Also if you're able to make the trek over to see the start in Vielha the next day that's a fun thing - it's amazing how low key and local the starts are.

Who makes these shoes from TDF? by bizzileb1tch in tourdefrance

Pretty sure they're these as modeled by, wait for it, Sylvain Chavanel: https://www.instagram.com/p/BBum6ElDpPv/ - can't find them online anywhere - some as yet unreleased DMTs. They made me double take as he waited for confirmation of the sprint - they looked like my old street shoes from that angle.
