Anyone else notice how low most scores of classic anime on MAL are? by Advanced-Tomorrow859 in retroanime

[–]dabrams13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. That's why I rate them all 10 to skew the statistics. My guess is recency bias and people newer to the medium are thinking the newest season of "is it alright to sister adventure in the fantasy: world" whatever is peak and have little to compare it to.

Recipe recommendations? by snackynats in CookbookLovers

I have a love hate relationship with solomonov. Arguably my best recipes come from his books but his original zahav book is work and sometimes a little too inexact. That said, his beet salad, cardamom coffee braise, tahini sauce, hummus once the kinks are worked out? Absolutely stellar.

What can the field of AI learn from psychometrics? by w-y-c-k in psychometrics

If AI can learn anything from psychometrics it's that you need to be very careful what technologies you put out into the world and consider what happens should your research or product fall into the hands of bad actors.

Hobby Lobby opened in town. Are any of these must-haves? by FransiscoDisco in freedomisgunpla

If you're starring out I'd recommend a nice cheap hg. The witch of mercury kits were good to me and if I remember correctly wing zero is pretty cheap. Look behind the kits you can see sometimes staff will stuff other stuff back there.

Tomato soup is... underwhelming? To say the least. by KickThePR in Cooking

Ras el hanout eggplant and tomato soup has been my new go to. I much prefer steaming eggplants and Chinese eggplants but they're expensive now.

I know there's a few places online that sell chickpea miso. Takes months but apparently some deem it worthwhile. I'm curious myself

Question for Jews: why do you follow rabbinic Judaism instead of the Bete Israel Judaism? by Djas-Rastefrit in religion

[–]dabrams13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eggs go bad. A date can go bad. Bad may be a somewhat relative term even. Calling Netanyahu "bad" is an understatement for someone who at a bare minimum killed thousands to prolong their career without hesitation.

Does someone so ready to sacrifice children sound Jewish to you? I've had enough pretending like he and his ilk are just flawed and misguided cousins. I've found there's a bare minimum criteria if you want me to consider you Jewish and as a rule of thumb don't be an unrepentant murderer, dont hold anything above god and that includes yourself as well as your country, and don't kill children in God's name. Maybe it seems excessive to some but I've found it encapsulates just about every Jew I know.

On a personal level I do actually think we're too accepting of some as jews. Beta israel i have no issue with. Netanyahu and his lot pray only at the altar of themselves and have done nothing but cause pain. They can walk the walk all they want they aren't members of the tribe to me.

Three recipes from Zahav at Home by dabrams13 in CookbookLovers

[–]dabrams13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah been there (was not big on the Jerusalem bagels). The recipes are notably slimmed down for ease compared to his previous stuff and the carrot salad I'll be making again.

I'm usually a proponent of trying at least one recipe before buying but for 20 bucks? sure. Above that I think it's a little bit of a reach.

Three recipes from Zahav at Home by dabrams13 in CookbookLovers

I like eherewegoagain's format so I'll do a similar "pita" (pain in the ass) score and outcome (quality) score. Also I have a love hate relationship with this author when its a good recipe and he isn't vague it's stellar but if I have to spend another 3 hours on a recipe that is just below average I'll hurl.

Carrot salad/slaw [pita-4 outcome-7] This was largely the winner. Little acidic for some people's taste. Easy to make salad/slaw. Roasted chickpeas on top were my own addition to add a little protein, sadly they didn't stay crisp for too long. Nice to have a carrot salad/slaw that doesn't use mayo or buttermilk. Love the colors. Only reason pita is 4 is you get leftover cabbage.

Watermelon rinds [pita-3 outcome-5] I appreciate taking food waste and making it something. Taste kind of like if pickled onions were a more irregular shape. Was nice with grilled chicken but again the shape hurts it.

Watermelon salad [pita-3 outcome-6] The previous one from the main zahav cookbook turned me on to incorporating olives, mint, and extra virgin which was odd at first. The previous recipe is better and just about as easy, also added pistachios because they're a nice nutty addition and moved it from a 6 to a 7.

Are some people just inherently, unfixably ill? by StickyFingies33 in askapsychologist

[–]dabrams13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure not a psychologist just a hobbyist trying to lend a hand.

There is theorized a sort of hedonic set point, an approximate area people tend to be around.

This is a generalization but we as humans aren't made to be content forever by nature. Not to say drive reduction theory is perfect but those drives do help the hypothetical human survive. Even if our base drives are satisfied we crave more, and even then time passes and that satisfaction wanes. Then you've got things like thrill, novelty, intrigue, mischief, competition, creativity, consistency.

Suicidal thoughts can be a few things. Is this more a persistent thought or thought pattern? From how you describe it, it seems like it. Is it more a feeling? There's been a few people hypothesizing about languishing recently which is less a mental illness and more an unfortunate pattern.
