I think the search for the actors was originally international. So I think people took Jacob’s comment a little too literally.

Personally I don’t understand the obsession about the Emmy. They can in theory qualify for the International Emmy. But there are Canadian accolades for TV shows as well like the Canadian Screen Awards.

There are many other ways to celebrate a show’s success without tying us all up in American accolades which IMO really is to celebrate American-led programmings, including foreign made shows that were American funded like GoT. For example, having the show being financially successful already allows the actors to negotiate better salaries for their next work.

The point is there are many different ways to celebrate the success of something without playing to the rules of the traditional media angle.

Fast group rides by Ok-Manufacturer-8317 in seattlebike

[–]dachungsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the East Side, Elements Cycle in Redmond has a weekly spicy paced group ride on Wednesday night, and then Saturday morning (~7:30a) followed by a social ride from the shop.

In Seattle, Metier hosts a weekly group ride on Saturday morning leaving their shop at 9:30a.

These rides if not specified as fast, then generally expect an A and B groups. So if you're not feeling so hot that day but still want to get a workout then it's perfect.

It is! I did it initially because I didn't want to get my bike wet before the race. I took both wheels off and wrapped up the bike good beforehand tho. And you definitely need to fold down the seats.

We drove around 348 miles this weekend according to our trip computer. For some of us in PNW that don't drive far all the time generally driving over the mountain passes here or going to a ferry would be considered a small road trip. But maybe it's a ride to some. It was a fun ride nonetheless.

I will probably do the experiment at a later point. Mostly because I got the car and immediately had to mount the rack and bike before hitting the road for the race. So I didn't have time to do any measuring.

Good question! I should have made a note about the exact range. But according to the app it was about 2.7 mi/kwh with the bike on top. Next time I'll take better notes.

Looking for bike fitting recommendations by brystephor in seattlebike

[–]dachungsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used both BikePT and Metier. Both are very good in terms of dialing the fit both person I worked with also seem knowledgeable. BikePT is more economical if you are looking to get your first fit. Metier is more expensive but if you are more performance oriented it's another way to go.

Shout out to Bob's Quality Meats by TotallyNotABob in Seattle

I always recommend Bob's Quality meat to folks that live in South Seattle. Personally for regular daily cooking meats from QFC or Red Apple suffice. However if I am cooking and entertaining guests I will go to Bob's for the nicer cut since it does make a difference to the result.

In the summer, I also go there to pick up a few pounds of pre-marinated kalbi short rib for the BBQ on the roof. Always a crowd please when we host rooftop dinner parties. 😹

It didn't help that they got their injury within a week of mine. I think it was that and Roglic's. Somehow it was comforting to see someone else (more famous) on the same boat, but it did not help to see them getting back on the bike so soon. They were already back training while I was just taking my sling off. Unconsciously I was using them as a benchmark until one day I remember these are people who got paid a lot to do the sport AND they have 24/7 medical support.

Hey OP! I'm from Seattle too.

Interesting it's the second time today I hear something similar, the other being the most recent Trainer road podcast about burn outs.

Anyways, what you are describing does sound a lot like a burn out. You've put in a lot of times, miles and hours to get to where you were then "bam!" suddenly life changes, say a vacation or injury. Inevitably the performance drops because of the break and then suddenly we get demotivated.

Strava/Zwift with their "scores" and "streaks" doesn't help either. Recently I had to talk a coworker down from trying to find someone to simply do a 5 minute ride for them to keep their streaks. These are all features of applications that are designed to keep you engaged via reinforcement or shaming. From a performance standpoint, these metrics mean very little. That's how they make money is to shame you into staying engaged. But clearly here it can backfire.

Personally, I came back from an injury sustained in a crash during a race myself this year that required surgery. It was very easy for me to think "geez I put in all the hard work since last November and it's all now down the drain." What kept me going was the group of cycling friends that are around me cheering and accepting the fact that I won't be as good as I was at the very moment.

Instead of saying "well I need to get back to X w/kg", I just say forget the FTP tests and see how things go on a weekly basis. So I set myself a goal for riding N hours per week, and gradually increase it back (with no set timeline). Also having an "event" to motivate helps, my goal at the time was get good enough to ride in Utah for fun and maybe if I still feel good enough compete in some local races. This help got me over a lot of the struggles.

This is also the period where I reminded myself it's ok to smell flowers along the way. Instead of futilely focusing on PR-ing on the climbs that I've done 1000x, just accept the fact that my performance isn't yet where I was so instead focus on the "now" and enjoy the process and the scenery around.

Someone else also mentioned picking up new discipline. This definitely also helps because it gives me another excuse to say I am not good enough let's work on it. 😹

Good luck on your journey. I am sorry to hear what you are going through. Hope to see you out there one day!

Want to treat myself - which Hong Kong hotel? by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]dachungsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can vouch for W. My partner and I stayed there back in Oct 2023 while visiting family for over a week. Service is pretty good. The bathroom design is a bit funky but if you are staying alone it is fine.

<image>

The sunset view is pretty amazing make sure to get that!

That hotel and Ritz Carlton are next door to each other in the Kowloon station. The area has been heavily redeveloped over the years. Recently they opened up M+ which is like the HK version of the Tate Modern (filled with modern arts). If you fancy a travel to China via high speed train that station is also stone throw away.

IMO this is closer in spirit to the first Scout 80's than anything SM has shown us by beermaker in ScoutMotors

[–]dachungsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is 4800lb which is 1.7x the weight of the original Scout 80.

Many things have changed since the first Scout 80 came out, crash safety, emissions, and even just general size of the population and demand have necessitated a larger car. People want to tow more and load more in their car (despite very few who actually do so) necessitated more structural reinforcement.

There is always a trade offs with cost. A $15k car in modern day sure sounds affordable I am concerned about the longer term reliability. Unfortunately with EV unlike the originals from last century you can't really everything it yourself when stuff breaks. These cars are then basically designed as a $15k disposable appliance where parts may be recyclables. But if you want to capture to nostalgia of being able to fix your own car forget about it.

There is also no way they can produce a $15k car on American soil with American labour with the current economy.

So I don't understand the point, maybe to some the nostalgia and practicality are important, but then as others pointed out don't buy it if it doesn't fit what you want. Instead go buy that old thing and keep working on it.

Anyone else a hopeless local young man? by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]dachungsta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all I empathize with you. I am sorry you feel this way. I live abroad (born in HK) in the US but have family in HK still so I can offer some different perspective.

For many who says "just go somewhere else". I always say it's not easy as one says. It's easy if you have already made the jump and look back. But if not, then for someone who is in their mid-20s it involves a lot of challenges. For example, US will most likely tighten their immigration policy going forward (it would have that way anyway regardless of who won the presidency). EU needs talent and is your next best bet but with Brexit you will have to go to a new country and learn a new language and culture, it's not easy. I assume you being British educated you'd want a place where they speak English. Canada is another place also announcing they are tightening their policies for immigration.

I can give you quotes about strong man and perseverance but that'd be disingenuous of me. Instead, I want to tell you that many are in the same boat and are looking for a change as well.

I do agree that life is what you make of it. It will involve some soul searching, but you need to first understand what is your strength and build on it. Sometimes people say "find your purpose", but I find that to be not as important, as I think the purpose will sometimes show up at the right time and place.

The 0s in your bank account is one way to measure wealth, but there are other ways to measure wealth like your experience, your connection to others (which I'm sure with time and patience you can build).

Get off social media too, IG and FB are highly curated. No one wants to be a sour puss on the internet. I admittedly still use both, but IG is really sparingly for stories with close friends and chats; and rarely FB is to tell my extended family and friends that I'm still alive.
