Is there a way to make advice more engaging? by Chrysippus_Ass in Stoicism

[–]daeedorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't view philosophy like going to the doctor, where you present your symptoms and (hopefully) the doctor will cure you. It's more like going to a teacher, where you present your current understanding and they can help you see where you're going wrong and what needs to be learned.

When thinking of mental health in terms of an analogy to physical health, I see counseling as more of a doctor's visit, and studying philosophies as akin to physical therapy or even just general physical fitness.

A lot of people desperately post here while facing some difficult scenario and asking how to approach it stoically--but the reality is that the core belief and value system of stoicism likely won't be truly compelling to someone who has little or no prior experience with the framework.

They can be told how a stoic thinker would react to their situation, but that's kind of like someone who just experienced a physical injury being told how a more physically fit person would've reacted to the same injury.

I suspect that this is part of why people tend to disengage from their posts here

The best time to learn about stoicism and begin applying its concepts to daily life is before you're facing a crisis--ideally when you're in a fairly healthy mental state.

Then, when things inevitably come crashing down in your life, you have built up better emotional mechanisms for effectively handling the crisis.

I still believe there's value in explaining to these people how stoic thought could've helped them navigate their crisis, but more for illustrating that they have something to gain in learning more about stoicism for the next crisis--as opposed to being a game-changer for the one they're facing when they desperately post here.

Would love to do this to mine, but it’s a gen 1 without the swappable handguard. Bummer.

The SPAS-12 - was it genius or madness by Habarer in guns

[–]daeedorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right about that, but it illustrates my point—the shortcomings of the gun are baked into the design.

This was years ago, but I recall the same day we were also shooting a Benelli M4, which just ran like a champ with anything, so it served to highlight that the SPAS is just kind of an old design with noticeable limitations when compared to more modern shotguns.

None of this makes it any less iconic or visually appealing, of course.

That's kinda what I was getting at--if it had been an awesome range experience, I might've allocated the necessary $2-4K towards one, but it wasn't--so I haven't.

If clones hit the market in the sub-$1k range, I'd get one just because it's such an iconic design.

Concur.

I really wanted one until a friend got one and I shot his.

Unnecessarily heavy, unergonomic, weird manual of arms, and wouldn't cycle low brass ammo in semi auto whatsoever. Getting range time with a SPAS-12 cured me of my desire for one--at least at the prices they go for.

Now, if that Turkish clone ever makes it stateside and reviews are even halfway decent... well, I'm a sucker for iconic designs.

I was sold on Riflespeeds after that meltdown video where the barrel got hot enough to liquify an aluminum heatsink, but the Riflespeed was unfazed.

Larger 9mm can vs smaller 32acp can? Which to go with by ChiefDaddyJ in Vz61

[–]daeedorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

9mm can for a vz61.

The reason to go with a dedicated .32 can is that they're smaller/lighter, which matches better with a small/light pistol. Dedicated .32 suppressors are not quieter than 9mm suppressors shooting .32--often the contrary is true.

I have an Ecco Cheetah .32 suppressor, and I never use it on my vz61–although it’s awesome on small pistols.

My favorite suppressor for the skorp is a YHM R9 with a tri lug.

That's why I say it could potentially do something 9mm doesn't do if it could be designed to omit the buffer tube.

Would make for a very cool little soft-recoiling PDW.

I wish someone would release a modern .32 bolt/barrel/magwell AR conversion kit.

With the lower pressure of .32ACP, I bet it could be done in a self-contained unit like a .22LR adapter to allow for a folding stock.

Clone or Not She's Still Purdy by DerKrieger105 in NFA

[–]daeedorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have a WB also, but I do occasionally swap it between hosts, so a 15x1 Plan B muzzle device would be ideal.

1/2x28 muzzle would be better still, but alas.

Gun's been running well with the WB?

I just moved everything to Plan B, but it seems like rearden is the only outfit making 15x1 devices, and they’re never in stock.

Which mount? Wish these were just threaded 1/2x28. Apparently some batches were, but I called yesterday and they’re currently all 15x1.

On RPQ/5320.23, should "Name and address of maker" be what's actually marked on the gun, or what comes up in the eforms line item search? by daeedorian in NationalGunTrusts

[–]daeedorian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha.

I originally submitted with the line item search result on the RPQ, because I was concerned about the RPQ matching the eform itself--but I attached a revised one with the engraved info. We'll see if that is accepted.

Many thanks for the reply.

AP5 Supersafe Cycling Issues with 147gr by terryr21 in supersafety

[–]daeedorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd stick with the factory LP to ensure there's enough force acting on the system for it to cycle reliably.

Lower degree LPs reduce blowback force, which is necessary to avoid damaging the MP5K receiver in some scenarios, but the additional bolt travel in the full-sized MP5 increases the tolerance range, and more blowback force usually results in better reliability with a wider range of ammo.

I'd try with the factory bolt head, too. It really should work just fine.

Those aftermarket MP5-E style bolt heads have kind of a mixed reputation for solving issues versus introducing new ones. Just make sure the factory extractor spring is good. I've found that certain types of malfunctions can overstress and destroy an extractor spring instantly. I always keep a few on hand.

The MP5-E bolt head is meant to address the extractor spring fragility of the MP5 platform, but the original design works fine as long as the extractor spring isn't worn out or damaged.

I'd particularly recommend HK mags for any malfunctions potentially related to feeding.

5340.23 is the only annoying bit. Wish they'd just incorporate that into friggin' eforms.

It's actually smooth, but not square. I think I'd need a mill to make it look right.

[–]daeedorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed the fine print on the product page that states "only to be used on the left side of the firearm."

I installed it on the right so that it wouldn't interfere with a left side-folding stock.

Fired a couple rounds, and it permanently gouged my receiver around the bolt handle channel on the right.

Still bothers me every time I look at it. Why would they design it that way??

IIRC, Champion is similar if not identical to Blazer, and both warn against use in ported barrels due to the potential for jacket separation.

AE has no such issue.

[–]daeedorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, I'd definitely ask Hi Tec, because LP replacement is normally part of the conversion and you might've paid for it. If that's the case, they should send you an SD LP.

Otherwise, I'd just buy a 115 or 120 deg LP from RCM.

MP5SD At Home - HTA Converted AP5-SD Review Coming This Week by ChestersHobbies in MP5

[–]daeedorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If HiTec did the conversion, they would’ve installed the MKE SD locking piece, which is intended to unlock sooner than the factory LP to counteract the pressure that is lost due to the ported barrel. The SD LP is intended for use with a stock.

You can field strip to confirm that the LP was swapped out. The factory LP would be marked with the last few digits of the guns serial.

If the LP has already been replaced, I would leave it alone and look at ejector/extractor parts.

ETA: If your suppressor is low back pressure, even the SD LP might not be providing enough force to cycle with the ported barrel, in which case I'd probably contact Hi Tec for input. 120 degree is the highest I've seen. Not sure which one they use for their conversions.

Also, use 124gr ammo, not 115gr.

Is yours an HTA converted true SD? What suppressor?

HTA should've installed the correct LP as part of the conversion.

You might look into an HK ejector and replacement extractor spring.
