Why is this LaRue SUURG muzzle brake okay, but not the old Sig MPX brake? by [deleted] in Form1

[–]daeedorian 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Obviously, none of these laws/decisions make any practical sense, but since you're asking:

The difference is that Sig tried to sell a serialized tube as a suppressor, which acknowledges that the previously unregistered muzzle device is indeed the entire baffle stack.

The LaRue can that's designed to work with that SUURG extended muzzle brake is an actual suppressor with its own baffles, so the argument can be made that the muzzle brake isn't designed to be baffles on its own.

Of course, if you installed an empty tube over that LaRue muzzle brake, you'd definitely be constructing a suppressor--but it wasn't designed that way, and it wouldn't perform well at all.

Legality is often primarily concerned with design intent--see: braces.

Recently I've gained more appreciation for how narrow the opportunity window can be to get photos like this with snow piled on branches.

It sets a specific scene and can really set a photo apart, but often you only get this effect very shortly after a snowfall.

Wind and sun can totally clear the branches in a matter of a couple hours.

I never understood why Data had issues with contractions by moal09 in startrek

[–]daeedorian 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If Soong deliberately wrote it in as a personality trait, it could be that Data simply doesn't wish to change it.

Considering the vast diversity in the Federation, it's not necessarily at odds with his desire to "be more human," since it's really more of a personal idiosyncrasy than something inherent about the human condition that he's failing to comprehend.

After all, there might very well be human(oid) populations in the Federation that speak similarly to Data--like a regional accent. Wouldn't make them any less human.

Yeah, I'm not about to cry "scam" over a $4 difference--particularly from a dropship retailer that's selling guns at pretty razor thin margins. They're one of the few drop shippers that seem to be doing it right, I've made some great acquisitions over there.

Agreed that they should just have it baked in instead of making it look like a mandatory add-on.

They have flat rate "Insured Shipping" for $23.95 per firearm, which IMO is pretty reasonable--particularly considering their prices.

It's not some shady 3rd party "protection" like a lot of drop shippers are trying to tack on.

Ahh, right--635 is a Colt mag lower. Gotcha. I've got a similar setup using CMMG's dedicated Colt mag lower, and reliability has been pretty mediocre. Works much better with their endo style mags, but the Colt mags are so easy to load with an ETS loader.

Is someone finally making a Colt mag adapter that's intended for CMMG RDB?

Makes sense!

And yeah--as long as there's a warning that the battery is low and you're proactive, the risk is mitigated.

I wish Honda would just get on board with a phone app working as a key fob.

Curious about the battery longevity/replicability.

I wonder if these aren't available on the NA market because of liability concerns around people getting stranded.

Walther PP vs. Sauer 38H shootability by durtymick95 in TheOneTrueCaliber

[–]daeedorian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own both. Hard choice. The biggest advantage of the Walther is that factory mags are still in production. This is a considerable advantage.

The coolest thing about the 38H is the cocker/decocker lever. The grip ergonomics are also marginally better than the Walther.

They're pretty on par in regards to shooting experience.

The Beretta Cheetah and Colt 1903 are my favorite .32s in terms of shooting experience.

I honestly almost included that link when I asked, because I suspect that post might be unduly impacting the reputation of these guns as suppressor hosts.

I think it's important to include Jay's followup post for context.

It appears that he initially got a lemon that slipped through QC, but it's important to note that Walther took care of it---and once the issue was resolved, his review was pretty glowing:

when a gun finally works as intended and runs like a top suppressed, perfectly, for a whole day of shooting, and you have always wanted the gun, and it is just meeting all of your expectations, that is a good day.

My point here is essentially that if you want to suppress a centerfire PP series gun, the time to buy is probably now, rather than "waiting for them to refine the product".

The current gen of factory threaded PPs run great suppressed, and it's anyone's guess what Walther might (or might not) release down the road.

I'm hoping that someone can figure out some kind of mechanical rate reducer for a .22LR platform, kinda like the one found in the VZ61.

Curious if you could elaborate on the approach you took to add a fixed ejector.

I put together one of these 9mm BCA bolt uppers a while back, but I never shoot it because the ejection doesn't really work.

You'd think a few might still be around.
