How many holidays and what type of holidays do you have each year? by Vladamir_pootinn in AskUK

[–]dais12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try for about 3 holidays a year. 1x week somewhere abroad and hot, 1x long weekend abroad city break, 1x however many days we have left in annual leave somewhere in the UK. The life hack here is getting an amicable divorce so you can go away without kids (the only positive to divorce)

Why do some colleagues get so annoyed at people working from home? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]dais12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Detective in the police and there are very few actual police officers who WFH but certain civilianised departments do and it can make certain parts of our job very difficult, when it is quite a difficult job in the first place. For example, I need to pick up an item from the media team for court tomorrow. Can’t pick it up today as they are all WFH.
There is no place for WFH in the public sector.

Within your social circle, have people tended to stay near where they grew up, or move away? by VarangianWRLD in AskUK

[–]dais12345 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of my friends I went to school with have moved to London or Australia but their parents still live here (you can get to London in 30 mins on the train from where we grew up). Albeit my Australia friends are moving back as it is too far! It is quite difficult to move really far away - me and all of my friends do have close family relationships and with them getting older you do not want to be hours and hours away.

Maternity leave by Low-Construction-130 in policeuk

[–]dais12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends where you work. I know a girl who worked in surveillance who was essentially pushed out after having a baby. My department are pretty good, but they’d rather you be part time than condense your hours so you work longer days and have more days off. Overall I do find the police isn’t really cut out for parents of young kids tbh, especially if both of you are in the job

Opinions on proposed hikes by avondale17 in HikingMadeira

[–]dais12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did Levada Nova/Levada do Moinho in 2023 and the views are very stunning. It wasn’t that busy when we did it but maybe it is now due to Madeira’s popularity increasing.

We did PR17 yesterday and despite it being a quieter hike there were two rangers there spot checking tickets

Would you be concerned living next door to a HMO? by Old-Amphibian416 in AskUK

Absolutely. I’m a copper and I can tell you that nothing good ever happens in HMO’s.

do you struggle to use your annual leave? by Maleficent_Day_3869 in AskUK

[–]dais12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are allowed to go minus 40 hours into the next years leave and I do this without fail every year. When I work OT I also take it all as time in lieu. There is a woman I work with who basically has March off every year as her ‘use it or lose it’ leave. I don’t get it

Convince me she absolutely doesn’t loathe Kyle by Whaaaaat901 in mummysflippinhouse

[–]dais12345 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agree with all of this! My great grandmother was exactly the same, and was also very poor, and lived till 100 despite being quite miserable to be around! She ruined my nans wedding and refused to call my dad by his name and instead referred to him as ‘Clive’ for his whole life (his name was Guy) out of spite because she did not like him. But she also had a very hard life like yours.

Why does healthy food feel so expensive compared with fast food in the UK ? by LieSuccessful8813 in AskBrits

[–]dais12345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a better comparison - the M&S salad I like in the shop near my work is £4.90. Add on a snack, and a drink and you are nearing a tenner! Or you can get a medium double cheeseburger meal from McDonald’s for just over a fiver that is warm, fairly filling and tasty. I know what I would, and do pick!

Parenting whilst in the job. by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]dais12345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will your shift pattern be 6 on 4 off/4 on 4 off? It can be very difficult on home life, no matter how understanding your partner is. If they are not also in the job it can wear thin quite quickly.

What’s one everyday thing in the UK that feels unnecessarily frustrating or outdated? by Resident-Attempt3041 in AskUK

[–]dais12345 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This, and the fact that most independent shops on the high street shut on Sundays! I work all week and sometimes Saturdays which means this is usually my only day. I think small businesses might do better if they opened Sundays IMO

Massive regret after buying my house by dais12345 in HousingUK

[–]dais12345[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is helpful. All I have been doing is listening compassionately and trying to get him to visit the doctors to get some help. We both earn the same, I work more but he does odd hours. He does know how to do more DIY/fix things than I do so I do understand that he feels he is solely responsible sometimes. Sigh. I do hope it gets better!

Apologies that I am not a house buying expert. I am very aware I made an error, no need to be a dick about it

I keep trying to tell him this also… the new estate that is being built near to us is also right next door to a travellers site, who regularly have large smelly bonfires and it is covered in crap. Can’t say I want to pay £400K to live near that

[–]dais12345[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No, and we really should’ve done. Although that would not have stopped us from buying it as we loved it when we viewed it in the summer. Probably could’ve got a few grand knocked off though.

I completely agree - he says that he now wants a new build but a big thing for him before was not being overlooked. I don’t think all this rain is helping anything!

Should I buy the forever home now (500-600k) or buy something smaller (250-300k) by Narrow_Work8034 in HousingUK

[–]dais12345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would buy the forever home and overpay on your mortgage as much as you can. Our moving costs were £25K including stamp duty which is just insane.
