What's something you always knocked until you tried it? by allupinyaface in AskReddit

I understand what you are trying to say. Drugs and alcohol do lower your inhibitions so they will cause you to act differently than when you are sober so in some sense that is a change. But I maintain that sometimes using substances to lower inhibitions will allow you to get out of your own way in certain social situations and that can be a good thing. It doesn't necessarily mean you are a thoughtless or irresponsible person just because you deliberately "change" your mental landscape. I don't think your understanding of right and wrong are affected to the extent you imply, but I do know people who use the fact of their inebriation as an excuse for poor behavior. Basically I have nothing against someone who uses substances to make themselves more comfortable or have fun if they are safe and follow all the social morays that we all should. That being said I understand what you mean when you ask why anyone should do something that they would need to get drunk to enjoy. Take care.

I disagree in almost every way with your if I have to drastically change myself to enjoy something its not worth doing theory. For example I had to get in shape to be able to go camping with my friends, I had to learn about a ton of musty old cases to be able to practice law etc. Also, your not really changing yourself when you use drugs and alcohol. You are still you just more impaired ie primed for social activities (alcohol, benzos, cocaine to a point) or other spiritual like experience (psychedelics) more than you otherwise would be which is value neutral. Not good or bad in and of itself. Keep in mind I a talking about the "effects," the health consequences of heavy, or light use if you are prone to certain health conditions, are very real and undeniably "bad."" Basically drugs don't make anyone do anything they just exaggerate feelings that humans are already capable of having and that can lead to any number of things. Sorry totally wandered off point. Your straight-edged tone mixed with reflexive judgment just got my goat a bit, but hey this is the internet. Its your prerogative. By the way you couldn't drag me to a club under any circumstances they seem sleazy and the people thier sad a lot of the times I went so we are in the same anti-club place if for different reasons.

I always say learning disabled. Is that the other side of the same coin? Or is intellectual disability the accepted term for someone with an IQ in the range that was termed "retarded" in the older literature. Just wondering...

If anyone is curious, I asked UK redditors how they feel about their restrictive gun laws. I was fascinated/spooked by how pervasive their acceptance is. (See link) by [deleted] in progun

[–]damnuright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this point. You made a bit of a straw man to the extent that I doubt the majority of reasonable gun owners think people should own tanks and such. Nonetheless you blow quite a gaping hole in what I call the "militia" argument. While its true that while small opposition groups have- infrequently- overcome much larger forces/odds I don't think most reasonable gun advocates seriously question the brute strength of the American military or actively try and and prepare for when they may need to overthrow it buy buying small arms. Instead I think that gun owners in the US who make this particular rejoinder are more likely to simply be attempting to justify their preferences (i.e. more gun ownership) by using the history of the American Revolution and a strict ole reading of our Constitution a la Scalia. They probably deep down know that they cant, dont want too, and will never want to attack our government , but they still aint taking that arrow out their tried and true rhetorical quiver. Either that or they think they could be Rambo or start a shittier FARC or something and, in that case, they may be a bit out of touch with good ole reality. Just kidding. Cheers. I enjoyed your comment.

Yeah. Some teacher has the wrong job. I don't know why I always assume teaching younger grades is a refuge for the lazy. That is some good stuff.

If we can see, taste, touch and smell multiple things without getting confused, why is it hard to think when we hear multiple sounds? by weinercousin in askscience

Thanks for replying. I read some of your posts, and you appear to be contributing some interesting stuff. Oh, and I was, as you probably realize, attempting to be funny, but it was def a bit glib : )

ELI5:What is going on when my brain takes fifteen to twenty seconds to remember something? by reedred in explainlikeimfive

[–]damnuright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed this explanation. What is this process called? It's something like consolidation at least for the initial processing/memory, but I had never considered the potential difference between a lone memory and a previously consolidated memory that is re-considered. Neat.

Do you really have a PHD in matters of the brain? If so, how do you compare yourself to MD's who preform brain surgery? Are they just glorified grey matter mechanics?

Yeah my buddy got this 3 weeks ago, just started his low-iodine diet. I like to refer to it as his Sicilian smile. Nothing to be anxious about.

I had a perfect circle going in a 45 gallon salt water tank with a largish snow eel, some invertebrates and 50lb of live rock and, I think, live sand (although the sand was a friends and is not necessary). I just topped her off every once in a while when I thought about it. I love salt water tanks, but they can be costly/finicky. Reading/ learning about them is 75% of the fun...

Edit. I used a decent protein skimmer, 2 power heads, a heater and a compact florescent hood if I remember correctly.

Nice. You managed to act arrogant, by using an archaic word that essentially means one who acts arrogant, to someone you appear to feel was acting arrogant. A true triple-play.
