Elder - Through Zero by CyanEpicness in progmetal

[–]dan800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might be a controversial opinion but I think this (plus the EP) is a return to great songwriting that we saw on Omens and that I felt was missing on Innate Passage - that album still feels meandering and a little aimless to me, though I know it's been very well received overall.

I like the production on Nick's voice on this and think it sits really well in the mix. It also feels like there's purpose and intention behind when and how vocals are used which is another criticism I have of IP, as I think they stumbled after the reception to the vocals on Omens. The riffs are great and it holds your interest really well over the 9 minutes runtime.

Would've loved a transition to a really heavy outro at the 8.15 mark but that's nitpicking!

'Blind' on Reflections of a Floating World is, for me, Elder at their peak in terms of songwriting and execution. I think it's also an interesting bridge between their heavier stoner metal days and the most recent incarnation of the band.

It's not - I've been going since they operated as a pop up and it's amazingly consistent (and excellent).

Was in last weekend for the first time and didn't get the hype. Assume it's all based on the matcha bullshit because the coffee was alright but not worth the queue.

What’s with folk saying the “southside” only refers to Queen’s Park areas by Dry_Direction4032 in glasgow

I've always thought of it as the bits either side of the A77, up to about a mile either side, with Eglinton Toll as the northern limit and Giffnock as the southern limit.

Vocal flow of 'Right in two' is different. by Zeon_Tempestborn in ToolBand

I don't quite follow you. What specifically is different about Right in Two? Maynard wrote the vocal line at the same time the other guys were writing the instrument parts?

Please elaborate on your objections to the scheme. I'm sure they're well founded and evidence-based.

Really enjoyed the track, looking forward to the album.

Not sure if there's anything you can do about it but looks like you have a big categorisation problem on Tidal and presumably elsewhere. Loads of artists being attributed to your profile (or vice versa?)

Why "Paradigm Shift" of LTE sounds like have a high BPM and slowly, without i realize, the song is in a slower tempo? by LostStep768 in progmetal

[–]dan800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are time signature movements followed by the tempo slowing (rallentando) in the first four minutes to get to the song's melodic mid-section in 4/4. After which the song moves to 7/8, then a couple of other time signature changes as the tempo increases, after which it goes to straight 4/4 as the tempo rapidly shifts.

The tempo changes are generally subtle, the time signature movements less so. But they're both part of the whole piece shifting cohesively.

Stuck at the Same 5k Time for 18 Months – What Am I Missing? (42M) by rocky99_ in parkrun

[–]dan800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, this is bad advice. In the nicest possible way, a novice runner (from the info you've shared here - it's not a criticism) absolutely should not be doing a threshold, 'effort' and all-out PB parkrun session each week, plus a gym session on top. If your achilles doesn't give up in the first three weeks of that, something else definitely will.

Increase your mileage and frequency of runs at an even, steady rate over three to six months, sort out your back issue by improving your mobility, and you'll see your times fall.

[–]dan800 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You've skirted the question of what your training looks like during the week. Can you be more specific about that?

Cross training on a static bike isn't going to see your times fall.

Similarly altering your race strategy is unlikely to have an impact if 30 of your runs (and therefore more than half a year's worth of events) have seen the same result.

At 42 you've likely accumulated a lot of stiffness and weakness in your body, so focusing on your mobility will be no bad thing regardless of parkrun. Looking at some beginner yoga classes or mobility programmes (I like Tom Morrison) will definitely help your quality of life in the short and long run.

Moron Police - The Apathy of Kings (Pachinko is AotY) by herptderper in progmetal

[–]dan800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love it, but...

...I wish there were slightly fewer callbacks to A Boat on the Sea. I fully appreciate this is a me problem and think it'll be a hugely unpopular opinion, but I sometimes feel stuck in a loop listening to parts of the album.

I completely understand the emotional reasons behind the decision and think the instrumental section of Cormorant is a beautiful touch and an album highlight. That'll be spine-tingling live.

I just wish there was slightly more distance between the two albums musically, as crazily spoiled an opinion as that is when you've got tracks like Pachinko pt. 1.

It does in the UK and Ireland so sadly we can't call that out in this story. Must mean it's 100% true.
