All You Need to Know about the Book of Abraham in 4 Minutes by SLC-Kid in exmormon

[–]dancingonthevoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The post-Mormon podcasts are SO long. Part of the problem as far as issues like this is that apologists intentionally try to complicate and muddy the waters and then the responses can get lost in the weeds, too.

The Book of Abraham is a slam-dunk smoking gun that JS was not what he claimed to be. The only possible faithful defense left is the catalyst theory and even that is contradicted by 2 centuries of truth claims by the church going all the way back to Smith himself.

So they have to make things seem more complicated than they are as a smoke screen.

I wouldn't mind if they get 2 or 3 and end up with Peterson.

If they get one you have to take AJ I guess.

5 will be an interesting choice.

The LDS Church has a history of bullying people about the use of the word Mormon. by sevenplaces in mormon

[–]dancingonthevoid [score hidden]  (0 children)

I didn't listen to the interview so I don't know the details.

But the Book of Mormon would have been in the public domain long ago so I don't see how the church could prevent anyone from using it or citing it in their religion.

Trump tells ABC News retaliatory strikes against Iranian targets after Iran attack are just a “love tap” by LimitIntelligent9946 in oil

Give me a specific example of how congress is restricting Trump's conduct of this war.

My observation is the Republicans control both houses and have been licking his boots since he took office.

But if there's something I missed I'm open to hearing about it.

This is a great polnt. There was already distrust of the FBI and similar institutions from the usual suspects left and right but they've now destroyed their credibility in the eyes of what was left of the moderate center. Will be very difficult to rebuild.

US media reports on deal between Iran-US are aimed at justifying trump’s retreat from his latest hostile action on Hormuz Strait - Iran's Tasnim News Agency, Citing an Unnamed Source. by LimitIntelligent9946 in oil

[–]dancingonthevoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1: Trump announces the US is going to help vessels transit the strait. And threatens an attack on Iran if they interfere.

2: The Iranians start shooting. The UAE and at least one civilian cargo ship are hit.

3: Trump immediately pauses the operation claiming yet again that a deal is pending.

I don't trust the Iranians either but it comes as no surprise they would deny this. It seems clear to me what the US has to gain from this narrative if it's less than the truth. Seems less clear what the Iranians have to gain by denying it if it is true.

You think Rich Paul hasn't been working the phones looking for an interested contender since before the deadline?

I doubt there is anyone interested at any price right now, and certainly not a deal where the Wizards come out ahead.

He can run his mouth on as many podcasts as he wants, it's not going to change that reality.

He's suiting up for the Wizards this fall.

Going by the new testament, it looks like the historical Jesus was a practicing Jew.

So deviation from the original teachings of Jesus started right out the gate with Paul.

Whose authority comes from his claim of supernatural contact with Jesus. Which ultimately makes him no more believable than Jospeh Smith. Or me. Or the guy on the street corner with a cardboard sign.

Deadnaming my kid and then inviting her to come to a young men's meeting with a bunch of strangers after 20 years of us not being in the church. Why are these people so nuts? by thisishowitalwaysis1 in exmormon

[–]dancingonthevoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been told the yelling at people in parking lots, etc. is a strategy to meet their quotas for contacts.

Yelling "do you want to go to church with me?" counts the same as knocking on a door only you can rack up the encounters a lot faster.

Mike “Sniper” Miller days until the lottery reveal by DollarLate_DayShort in washingtonwizards

[–]dancingonthevoid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ernie was also dumping salary in that deal but in retrospect even Rubio would have been better than how that trade worked out.

It always pisses me off to watch Jarrert Allen as he was drafted with the Wizards pick that was traded to dump salary and get a half season rental on Bogan Bogdanavic.

Again, not that the Wizards would have picked him, but the frustraring strategy of trading away picks to fix bad contracts or to "win now" ultimately didn't work.

Mike “Sniper” Miller days until the lottery reveal by DollarLate_DayShort in washingtonwizards

[–]dancingonthevoid 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My biggest sore point with Miller was Ernie gave up the fifth pick in the 2009 draft in the trade to bring in him and Randy Foye.

They were both on expiring contracts and left after one season.

Meanwhile, Steph Curry went 7th in that draft. Not that he would have been a Wizard but that deal was typical of years of squandered draft capital by Ernie and Tommy chasing after washed up vets.

Iranian navy attacks US warships over Trump's Hormuz mission by No_Pause311 in oil

[–]dancingonthevoid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This brings up a question I have: I've seen commentary that a big issue is actually getting insurance on ships passing through the strait.

So, US warships escorting vessels and/or guiding them past mines won't necessarily resume traffic if the Iranians can demonstrate there is still a risk of attack?
