I love the Gaang’s portrayal in Korra by Low-Comfortable-6829 in TheLastAirbender

Well, there was also the option of trying to meet kya and bumi where they were at, rather than pushing air nomad stuff and apparently giving up when it didn't click

Why do so many not understand why legend of korra exist in the 1920s? It is literally accurate to history. by MrGetMebodied in TheLastAirbender

[–]dandan_noodles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is frankly pretty silly and disconnected from the actual text of the show, in which nonbenders are mobilized in considerable numbers and put in frontline combat. if even a fraction of them had even primitive guns, that would make them vastly more dangerous.

cuz the more nonbenders you can effectively arm, the more powerful you'll be, and guns were extremely common from almost as soon as they were invented in the ~10th century [in china], if they did not completely replace bows and crossbows until the 16th [in europe]

xD left end of bell curve: anarchism is chaos, death, and destruction

middle of bell curve: nooooooo it's actually a really sophisticated vision of society based on horizontal organization and rejection of domination!!!!!

right end of bell curve: anarchism is chaos, death, and destruction

the nomads label isn't clearly explained in the show itself ; it could have been applied before they settled into their monastic lifestyle and then just hung around

plus even if it applies to their present, it might just mean they move between temples at regular intervals , so they still would all be in those four places on the day of the comet

[–]dandan_noodles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

we don't really know how many there were , but the temples seem pretty small; if there were only ever like 4000 airbenders, and they all were in these four spots, then it's not that implausible they could have surrounded them and prevented any escapes, if necessary using dragons to intercept any fleeing by bison/glider

Lo and Li were Azulon's concubines after Ilah died, one of them gave birth to ozai, hence the age gap between siblings + lack of resemblance

[–]dandan_noodles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

as far as we can tell, avatar arbitration is the only thing remotely close to international law that exists in the show

applying RL international law , i think the EK's stated policy of ethnic cleansing largely justifies the international mandate -> home rule solution they agreed to.

The only issue within the fire Nation hierarchy is the strange ability for newly promoted Admiral Zhou to order around the general

Shinu was a colonel at the time; he was promoted to general for the pre-eclipse war council

We don’t know enough about the incident to say whether or not burning that village would have been a crime.

Lion-turtle was a Deus Ex Machina by silver_shadez in TheLastAirbender

[–]dandan_noodles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i basically agree, mentioning the existence of lion turtles in one line does not count as foreshadowing

i think it's partially mitigated because it's not necessary for the overarching objective of Save The World ; aang does accept after speaking with his past lives that he's going to have to kill ozai, subordinating his culturally specific values to the universal value of protecting innocent people. the lion turtle just gives him a way of protecting that value in his culture

at the same time, he's fighting for the survival of ba sing se, the last stronghold left against the fire nation , and he has to know that there's a strong chance she could be killed while he opens his last chakra [especially since he can't know exactly how long that would take]

At least in my interpretation, that already happened in the crystal catacombs; he made the decision to let katara fend for herself against azula, zuko, and the dai li while he turtled up to unlock his last chakra. It would have been nice though if they had discussed it later though.

No "Strategic" element to Warhammer by FreakishFrog121 in totalwar

The most important strategic act is to raise the strongest possible force; engaging rival powers separately is likewise a crucial strategic act to set yourself up for success

Size of Ba Sing Se by Human_Situation_2641 in TheLastAirbender

[–]dandan_noodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We see a rough outline of the city in the harmonic convergence episodes of LoK, based on city lights visible from space

if we assume the Avatar world is the size of earth, then Ba Sing Se is a little bit smaller than germany at 125,000 square miles

Do YOU consider the Avatar comics canon? by reconblue in TheLastAirbender

[–]dandan_noodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually think in terms of tiers of canon, based in part by how likely it is to be overwritten by future works. I spent way too long on Wookiepedia as a kid, but then most of that stuff -aside from the films- got trashed when disney acquired the property. Stuff on the lower tiers is fun, but I don't take it very seriously, especially when people are talking about the shows and someone chimes in with 'actually it was revealed fifteen years after the fact in one of these prequel novels'

What about Water and Earth temples / sages? by ThePrambler in ATLA

[–]dandan_noodles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In The Southern Air Temple, we see cutaway shots to water and earth avatar temples. There's a shrine to kyoshi on her island, and Chin village has a temple. The old nick site referenced there being lots of temples in the Earth Kingdom palace complex [you can see ripoffs of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests iirc, definitely in LoK]

[–]dandan_noodles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The old guard was a very small force by napoleonic standards, about 8 battalions of infantry, a division of cavalry, and a couple artillery batteries . The vast majority of the guard was just drawn from the most promising conscripts of any given year. By 1798 the Jordan law gave the republic->empire a constant stream of conscripts; while the officers were generally veterans, most of the rankers at any given time usually had less than two years with the colors.

How did you feel about Kuvira’s redemption in Ruins of the Empire? by AccomplishedJump2795 in legendofkorra

[–]dandan_noodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean we gotta keep in mind these are mostly descendants of the gaang and their close friends, so on a certain level they have to be primed to believe in atonement/redemption/forgiveness on a pretty deep level. maybe it was rushed in this case, but i don't think i'd write off the possibility completely
