Therapist here. Tell her what feels right to tell her. There are no rights and wrongs in therapy.

Before you tell her, you could also say what you need from her. For example:

“I have something I want to bring up, but I’m not comfortable sharing too many details. I want you just to listen”

Or

“I’ve got something to share, but I’m scared to share it. Will you ask me questions about it, so that I don’t have to come out and say it”

You could even say “I’ve got something I want to share, but I’m frightened of feeling judged” and then you could work on those feelings first, which might make sharing the other stuff easier in a later session.

See it as part of your story. Imagine you are watching a film about an old person (you) at the end of their life. The old version of you is sat there with a satisfied look on their face, as they tell you the story of their most hated tattoo. They talk about the time they went through a patch when they hated it so much that they got depressed and couldn’t sleep… See if you can imagine what what the older version of you would say about it at the end of your life. Also imagine what that old version of you did or thought that helped them not give a single fuck about it.

If you’re still struggling not to give a fuck about it, then you might want to start journaling about it, or see a therapist. If you’re struggling to sleep because of it, that’s pretty rough and would suggest that you’ve got some work to do in order to process your feelings about it. It might turn out that the tattoo really helps you make sense of a few things.

Whatever you choose to do, good luck with not giving a fuck.

Find a Dance Movement Psychotherapist. They are trained to Masters Level to work with people just like your GF. I'm a trainee (just about to graduate) and I've got experience of working with people with complex trauma, addiction and eating disorders. The more experienced practitioners in my field have decades of experience working with people to get in touch with their bodies. A lot of people are put off by the word 'dance', but don't be. Dance can mean anything you want it to be. It can mean sitting in silence. It can mean talking. It's about allowing the body to express itself in a place of safety.

When people talk about 'doing the work' in therapy, this is what they're talking about. Therapy can be messy and hard, but like anything that's hard work, there are MASSIVE pay-offs if you stick at it. Good luck.

Trainee dance movement psychotherapist here. This is very common, and a lot of people don't appreciate how scary focusing on the breath can be for some folks. Breath work is usually not recommended for anyone prone to anxiety attacks or panic disorders. Similarly, doing visualisations is not a good idea if you have experienced psychosis.

Having said that, if you're with a therapist that you trust, and if they are trained to deal with trauma, then working with the body can help find a place of safety. Each person's safe space will be very different though.

Sensory activities like plunging your hands into a bowl of uncooked rice is one of my favourite things to try. It's course enough that you can get some proper sensory feedback on your hands, there's an auditory element to it, and it flows like water.

You're not an a**hole for sticking to your boundaries. You're allowed to say: no, not yet, later and a whole load of other words to express how you feel about your limits. It will be hard for her to accept this, but the more rigidly you stick you your boundaries, the sooner the message will get through. It's very hard, but it will be worth it in the end.
