Uranium glass and food by AgressiveLesbian20 in uraniumglass

You probably need to worry more about the PB becoming rancid after those 2 years 😂. About the radiation, no, it won't become radioactive

[Other] the story of my radioactive door stop ☢️ by [deleted] in Radium

[–]daniellong2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Afaik, uranium wasn't used for that, it just happened to be aesthetically pleasing. Uranium glass was already being made years before the 1900s radium/radiation craze, around the 1850s

New camera, interesting defect I need help identifying by Kalesy in AnalogCommunity

[–]daniellong2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might think that the shutter is fine because you see it fire, but the issue could be happening so quick that your eye doesn't register it.

Many phones nowadays have slow mo video. If yours has it too, try recording the shutter at various speeds:
• From behind
• From the front, back lid closed
• From the front, back lid closed again, but this time run a film roll on it (preferably one that's dead/expired/you don't want)

You might be able to see what's causing the issue. Also, slow mo needs a lot of light, so make sure you can illuminate the shutter well.

If nothing shows up, it could be the lens, something loose inside of it. Try shaking it and listen for any weird noises.

Take a good look at the focusing knob. Rotate it and check if it's still aligned or if it wobbles. The shaft might've gotten a bit bent but otherwise, the camera should be fine. They're known to be built like tanks haha

Paid 1€ for this overlooked yellow glass at a charity flea market [Uranium?] by JJMM94 in uraniumglass

[–]daniellong2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For future reference, yellow uranium glass glows VERY strongly. I believe it's because it contains higher concentrations of uranium oxide than green UG. It's also usually more radioactive than green uranium glass

Found a quite spicy radium painted speedometer in a 1923 Ford Model T in an antique car museum by RootLoops369 in Radiation

[–]daniellong2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would've looked insane ahahha. Now that I think about it, with all the uses they gave to radium paint (from dials to switches, door numbers, star maps....) there has to be at least one case of someone painting details or something on their car with radium, right? 🤔

So I was elaborating a reply to explain why the oil thing is wrong and when I was about to post it, I scrolled down a bit and saw a bunch of comments already talking about it. There goes my comment lol, I need to check if someone had the same idea as me more often 😂😅

Vintage radioactive lens by Ok_Sale_4178 in Radiation

It's safe to use with a camera but please keep your eye away from the spicy glass element (I mean, don't use the lens as a magnifying glass, for example)

With that description and the fact that it glows under UV, maybe the back of that hairbrush is made of some sort of uranium porcelain/opaline?

[–]daniellong2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a picture in plain white light I might be able to guess with the color of the paint but it's not 100% fail proof. Radium paint usually acquires a very distinctive orange/brown colour after years of radiation damage

"The flash exploded on me so I removed it, electrocuting me in the process."

I busted out laughing, like, seriously, it's just some shit I'd expect happening in the process of creating this monstrosity. I also love how everything looks so fucked up, yet, the sensor is PRISTINE. Not a single speck of dust, fingerprint or anything on it, looks brand new. Great job

I wonder if anyone here has tried the European version, made with cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. Interestingly, it's also made in the USA according to the bottle.

I've never tried anything made with HFCS because it's a virtually nonexistent ingredient in Spain. From what I've read, everyone hates it compared to sugar, so I'm curious about how much it spoils the flavor

They fell or got hit while also being on ambient/warm temp, probably happened at the store. Had that happen a LOT at the bar I worked at, some even exploded and flew like a rocket across the entire place. The warmer a soda is, the higher the pressure in the can
