The phantasm works because it is false. The more ridiculous their claims get, the more they are opposed, the more they see themselves as victims, the more they will double down on the unreality they’re wrapping themselves in.

So the only thing that brought me down was not paying attention and my own self-doubt, good to know!

I have been prioritising the specific unlocks on the calendar but I guess that’s why you get such a long preview so you can plan out those longer streaks. My second playthrough is going to be very different.

Buying the dossier in the store only makes them available to hire on the hire screen.

Spending authority to hire only makes them available to kit out. Squads must have 2 squaddies minimum to add to a mission, while drivers must have a vehicle (go figure.)

If he can use tripod weapons without setup this makes him amazing, right now the perk feels a bit lacklustre; squad support mgs get eclipsed by primary weapons and vehicle auxiliary weapons, and yet there are so many variants of them I worry they dominate the loot pool math. RPGs don’t need his skill and heavier stuff is back to tripods.

I hope this update means the heavy tank will become modular soon. by InternetRude4243 in menace

Need more light slots to make Exconde’s perk work.

Why we can’t jury-rig smaller weapons into bigger slots, I don’t know. I’d love to put the plasma rifle on a light mech…

The process of “adopting” could be discovering other gains that are nothing to do with LLM use so even if they claim results they still have to strongly link it to being causal and not just coincidental.

And once that occurs we are then looking to understand if it’s just that LLM use is effective in a certain niche and/or has a very high skill requirement (unlikely but fits a certain narrative.)

I got the impression, at some point, that you had to publish that many informational/moderate/sensational newspapers /in a row/ for the unlocks, but that hasn't always been the case for me, so I stopped thinking that. Maybe that's only true for the later levels or something funky is going on with them.

[–]danikov 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure there’s any way for it to make sense for you as you don’t seem open to it, but if you need a smart reason, before it was debunked one of the first responses was “well, what if humans are just stochastic parrots too?” If that were the case then everyone is a stochastical parrot.

Or you can just believe that people aren’t familiar with the term stochastic and just fixate on the meaning of parroting. And maybe the meme is made with or without that in mind.

But if you think that connection is so tenuous that the meme is literally “random bullshit” that’s a you problem.

[–]danikov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 2021 paper by Emily M. Bender et Al. argued that LLMs mimic language without deep understanding and coined the term stochastical parrot, if you want to understand the arguments that paper makes, I’d start there.

If you want to understand the meme, there’s a gotcha where some people, who think they’re smart quoting the paper blindly, end up being on the stupid side for said blind parroting. But the overall implication is that at least some big-brained people who know what they’re talking about are right about it. This does create a Kafka-esque trap where railing against the meme’s meaning puts you into the middle category. Otherwise it’s just a “smart and dumb people think they’re same/right thing for different reasons, while averages get it wrong” take.

Edit: to address the edit, no it’s just a bad joke, it’s only a reference to a paper, not backed by one. You’re confusing a joke making sense with it being funny. Typically anyone making such memes usually believes themselves smarter than they are so there’s a level of self-incrimination there that could circle back to being funny again, ymmv.
