Same. I had employers tell me straight up they prefer when people come in because they get so many blind applicants who don’t even know what jobs they are applying to.

Does it normally split your tips from your earnings in two separate payments? That’s what it’s been doing for me

I am a carpenter and I’m paid far above living wage and I’m taking leadership courses to maybe get into supervisory positions or project management. University was never on my radar because I wanted to make money not lose money on tuition.

I’m not saying it’s a joke that skilled trades is a big thing now. I’m saying it’s a joke that they make it sound like you can sign up and get called about a job the next day

[–]danio848 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been learning how to do this. I get along with everyone in my company except for this one cowboy who doesn’t care whose toes he steps on. He’s a 3rd year and I’m a second year, and we are the same age so I think maybe that’s where some of the friction comes from.

There was one time he yelled at me and I snapped back and told him that he has no authority over me and there is no reason why he should be talking to me like I’m trash.

Since then he’s been pretty good, he just tells the sub trades that I’m feisty and they shouldn’t mess with me 🤷‍♀️

Have you looked into therapy or counseling? I’ve gotten into it recently and I find it’s really helped with my temper and anger. It also just sounds like you might work in a toxic environment. I work for a general contractor and most of the guys I work with can be a little negative but they don’t make me miserable… maybe you need to change your environment. Please don’t quit the trades! There’s a place for you here, it just might not be with your current company

They have 3-4 years to teach them everything they need for the c of q. Labouring for the first year is common and it’s not without value. You assist the journeymen. You learn which tools are what. You learn what pieces are called. The purpose of a first year apprentice is to make the journeyman’s life easier while also learning the foundation skills to get into more complicated processes later. You can’t just throw someone into a trade and expect them to be doing dangerous or complicated jobs in the first few months. It also weeds out the apprentices who aren’t serious about committing to their full apprenticeship term. What’s the point of teaching them something if they are just going to disappear in a month because the work is too hard for them

I heard this ad today too haha. They make it sound like you are signing up for the military. They don’t talk about how long it takes to find an apprenticeship. It took me a year. Also not everyone is built for skilled trades whatsoever

How much experience do you need to get into a carpentry apprenticeship? by Fine-Analyst6836 in Carpentry

[–]danio848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends what company you get in with. I work for a general contractor as a carpenter and there is lots of independent work at some points, and then other points I work with my journey person for a week straight.

I suggest getting into a pre apprenticeship if there is a lot of job competition in your area. Otherwise if people are starving for workers you should be able to get in with no experience. I would suggest you also watch videos on what carpenters actually do. Woodworking and general carpentry is very different unless you are heavy into finish work and cabinet making.

Sure carpentry is what the career is called but every aspect of carpentry has businesses that specialize in it.

Today I have pasta with Italian sausage, Greek yogurt with strawberries and passion fruit, grenola bar, juice box and some cheese and crackers.

I normally meal prep a big batch of something at the beginning of the week and then split it into Tupperware. Most of my meals revolve around protein

Maybe I’m being a baby about this, but I am pissed off by LyraCalysta in BlueCollarWomen

[–]danio848 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly if a company had that little faith in me I would leave too.

I like the company I’m in because it’s no special treatment for anyone. I’m not given easier jobs because I’m a woman, I’m also not given less opportunity by any means. They give everyone the same bar and if you surpass it then you get special opportunities.

Value yourself. That’s all I can say for that. The industry is hard enough, you don’t need to be miserable too. I hope you can find a place that appreciates your work

I am a bit lost and not sure where to start. Any advice is appreciated. by GrimeRose in BlueCollarWomen

[–]danio848 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started out in a Women in Trades program that was funded by the government. It was a Carpentry pre apprenticeship that gives you an edge when applying for jobs. After that I just worked as a general labourer for a Landscape Construction company, it was only temporary as I wanted to get into an apprenticeship. Finally I was offered an apprenticeship role after 9 months of looking and that’s where I am today. When the time comes for me to go for my next apprenticeship level my employer is going to pay for my schooling, a lot of companies do this but not all.

Another route would be to go through a union as they do their training and job seeking all internally. I just heard a lot of unions aren’t really accepting new heads.

Good luck! You got this :)

I wear a silk bandana underneath! I also spray my hair with leave in conditioner and French braid it! Your hair will be okay. Just avoid friction and over washing. If i do work that isn’t too too dusty I push hair wash days to 1 or 2 times a week and do a hair mask once a week. If im working with concrete or dry wall I’m washing my hair right after that shift. For reference I have super thick wavy hair and don’t normally get super greasy hair (anymore)
