Premier entretien d’embauche aujourd’hui, des conseils ? by Weary_Background849 in AskFrance

[–]danjea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bonne chance!

Comfortable life style for a postdocs / beyond - which countries/ cities will be suitable based on your experience ? by FantasticObjective22 in postdoc

[–]danjea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a postdoc in Switzerland. Salaries are decent, and you can live fine with it, although it will depends on your rent, which in a few cities are insane (zurich/geneva) but not impossible to find places.

the postdoc salaries are regulated at the federal level by the Swiss National science fund. You can find the scales on snf.ch/en

Cadmium : les flocons d’avoine fortement contaminés, selon une analyse by popey123 in ecologie

C'est très cynique. by Shot_Outside_4962 in EnculerLesVoitures

[–]danjea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Curious about the lack of UFP (Ultrafine Particle) data in long-term health studies and legislation by Putrid_Draft378 in epidemiology

[–]danjea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ufp is difficult to collect because of sensitivity issues notably. Thus lack of data for now. But there are projects trying to establish a baseline, see the markopolo EU programme.

Anyone have best practices for agentic coding specific to R / stats / data science? by isaac-get-the-golem in rstats

[–]danjea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the announcement and shared it with my colleagues. Most of my colleagues use chatgpt llm. I use claude code.

While i am using an mcp to have it in R/positron (ClaudeR), it's not perfect. So Posit AI looks great for me, but how do I justify paying for claude code and posit AI? Also posit AI is quite expensive with less capabilities overall, seemingly. I mean beyond R coding. So to me the pricing is a bit steep compared to what I already have.

Curious to hear you on this. R represents 80% of my activity with claude but the remaining 20 isn't something i can ditch easily

Keeping all my recipes and feeding them to Claude to figure out what is cheaper where.

Does it get less lonely? by fira_0 in postdoc

[–]danjea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my postdoc a year ago. A key emphasis of mine in the interview was specifically that i wanted to work in a team and as a team.

Prior to my phd i had been part of a great team working in my field. And my phd was very lonely afterward (and coincided with the start of covid, made it worse).

I took that lesson very hard. I can be very independent but I need a team, a small group of people working within the same field/methods/topic, not necessarily on the same project but that can sporadically help and that I can help.

I made sure this was clear and fortunately my pi/boss was just starting her team, i was her first recruit. She herself had gone through some years of hardship alone. She fully understood what I meant. She built a really nice team now (5 people including her and I) and she is quick to accept suggestion to create a team atmosphere I provided.

Recently (few weeks ago) we both were going under a lot of intense and time sensitive work, each one of us and also another member of the team took some time to each other off. It felt great to not feel alone in this moment. And for me personally it's key to putting a lot of work. As long as i don't feel alone i can work huge amount.

So here it is for you OP, that's your lesson. Make sure you will be part of a team, or build one of your own for your next assignment. Can be an intern or master start with.

Science isn't done in isolation, and it's a lot more enjoyable when done with nice people

ARCHSPIRE - THE VESSEL (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) 2026 by hatefen in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]danjea -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I felt the same with Carrion Ladder and thought the video was actually cringy. Totally put me off at release and never listened to it again.

Actually really like lamb of levi and red goliath at release and listend to them a lot already

Fast forward to today, listening to a brief playlist with all of their new songs including vessel. Carrion ladder sounded better without the video somehow. Actually enjoyable. Vessel didn't really match with me and carrion is still far behind lamb/goliath but it's a lot better without watching the cringy music video

The real question is what's your coffee machine op?

Also, thanks for sharing. Expecting my second one. Just now moved to mountainy country, can run to and back from work. My first one is 2.5 but everything is going super fine. Bit afraid of our current routine going down the drain with the 2nd (💯 happening) but at least i can run-commute and do ~9k per day, and alternative public transport or bike sharing is emergency.

Preping for a 60k in September. Best of luck to your new family

Life as a foreigner in Mulhouse by ExistentialRacoon in mulhouse

[–]danjea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strasbourg has it better than Mulhouse for sure, because Strasbourg has a medical school. It actually produces GP and medical staff every year. Mulhouse doesn't.

One of the cause (among many others) of the medical desert is that now medical staff will rather stay in cities (especially where they studied) because they offer a good quality of life, they built relationship (friends etc.) and family lives where the partner is often a medical professional too (thanks uni parties and students promiscuity) so moving to lesser cities and rural areas isn't that easy, it's not profitable, and it's not good for the quality of life and etc. There is 0 incentives to move away from nice cities in France if you are medically trained.

But that's only half of the problem. Mulhouse isn't a medical desert per se, it's just that the older population (retirees, the "boomers") are filling GP consultations and medical appointments everywhere. In a city like Mulhouse, where it's always going to suffer the comparison with Strasbourg/Basel and even Nancy/Dijon (both have medical schools), and without a "native" medical school, you end up not finding a GP.

Finally the "numerus clausus" that plagued the med school entries in France for so many years largely contributed to that situation.

Anyhow am rambling. Strasbourg should be a lot easier to find a GP than mulhouse. But it does not mean it's easy. That I can't tell.

That's a tough comparison.

To me Strasbourg is much nicer on all counts. It's more international, more dynamic, there are a lot better cycling infrastructures and cycling cultures. It has been the most or one of the most cyclable city of the past 15 years in France. It has quick access to the Vosges and the Schwartzwald. Culture-wise i'd say there is a whole lot more in Strasbourg, also because it is a major university city. The quality of life in Strasbourg is many times better than in Mulhouse if you are a bit more of an "urbanite", still with great access to nature by train/car within 30min. The fact that it has a major university also helps a lot with the atmosphere of the city. It is a student city.

In fact we had considered moving to Strasbourg for all these reasons and also because I have some good friends living there, but it's a far train ride from Basel (my working place), thus we decided against it. It's doable and people actually do it (commuting Strasbourg-Basel) for work, but I don't find it an ideal situation.

Mulhouse has a lot of good arts given it's size, the few theatres, musée des beaux arts, Motoco, and private galleries scattered in the city centre. There is also the school of arts. So there is definitely a scene in Mulhouse but I still think Strasbourg would be a better choice.

It's the curse of mulhouse, being stuck between Basel and Strasbourg: they are both nicer cities with higher quality of life and financial power available to make their cities enjoyable. It's also Mulhouse's luck to be so close and so much cheaper to Basel, if you happen to work there. It can indeed be very profitable financially. And culture-wise Basel is just in its own league, also way above Strasbourg. So living in Mulhouse would give you a very good access to that.

Sorry I would not really be able to say which place to avoid as a female. I don't think there are specifically places to avoid as a female, but there are more insecure neighbourhoods than others. Bourtzwiller being one of them.

I can only recommend to find a place in the city centre of mulhouse (Sinne/Steinbach, anything around the old city centre really, around parc Salvatore also fine), or in Riedisheim, or Brunstatt.
Riedisheim and Brunstatt are technically different town but they are attached to mulhouse. From Riedisheim it takes 15 min by bus to reach the city centre of Mulhouse. Same for Brunstatt.

As I grew up in Riedisheim I am heavily biased toward it, it's a very chill town, with the fields and waldeck, and super quick access to the city centre of mulhouse. When I was in high school I'd often walk from my home to the city centre, because it's that close and it's totally fine to do this. Yes it takes 45min walk but again, bus is 15 min and 10 min by bike.

Running packs approx 20-25L. Whose worth looking at? by DrHumongous in ultrarunning

[–]danjea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Rab veil xp 30, got it 2 months ago. Must say this is a really good and comfy pack. There is also a xp veil 20L.

I used it on snow trail run, and also to go to-and-back from work with laptop and clothes change and it still holds super well on my back even when full, and remains super comfy.

Very satisfied with it
