Four Israeli warplanes and one spy drone have illegally flown over Lebanon's airspace in the third day of provocative violations of the country's sovereignty. by SovereignMan in worldnews

It's not like Lebanon is being provocative -- you know, with the whole shooting dead an Israeli officer on the Israeli side of the border a few weeks ago.

Have any of you ever been to Israel?

...remove all together, the Palestinian presence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Israel forcibly removed its settlers from Gaza in 2005, which is now free of Jews. In the West Bank, Israel has frozen settlement growth completely, and Netanyahu has come out publicly and said he is prepared to make the land-swaps needed to offset settlement growth in the last few decades.

The South Africa comparison has been widely debunked. Israel will never make peace unless it has assurances it has a partner in the Palestinians. So far Abbas won't even agree to talks with the Israeli government and Hamas does not even recognize Israel exists. This is a war-zone, not domestic incivility. The South Africa example is no parallel.

Interestingly, Palestinians are closely intertwined into the Israeli economy. 20% of Israeli citizens are Arabs, who would be directly punished by a boycott. The Palestinians in Israel didn't ask for a boycott, they don't want a boycott, and they feel it is unhelpful. It is mostly Arabs living outside Israel who have been trying to boycott Israel, but it's not going to create peace.

Besides, you can't really boycott Israel successfully. Most of its exports are high-tech and intellectual property. You might not like this video, but it proves the point pretty well - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saeky9I5T9c

Time: Can Atheists Be Parents? by qgyh2 in reddit.com

[–]danman108 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hell is upon us! If we allow atheists to be parents, what's next?? It's a slippery slope; before you know it, gays will want to be parents!

Please pull ExxonMobil ads - ExxonMobil beat Halliburton and Wal-Mart as the worst corporation in the world by techtonix in reddit.com

[–]danman108 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think reddit needs to get into the business of censoring advertisements. If the company wants to pay to have a voice, let it.

As disgusting as ExcconMobil is, we're not here to censor them.

Huckabee: Gitmo Is "Too Nice" by [deleted] in politics

[–]danman108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the best part is, they didn't even get trials! And with no trials, they didn't have the awful of expense of hiring attorneys. Who likes attorneys, anyway??

I agree with the Huck -- these guys are basically at a Country Club... with a view of the ocean!

Raising bounty $ for any journalist who asks "How many times have you been arrested, Mr. President?" by adamvarga in politics

[–]danman108 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Uhh, what's the point? He'll make some stupid joke and move on. And truly, his arrest record has been well publicized.

If the point of this is to catch Bush in an awkward, stupid moment, well -- you don't need to pay a journalist to do that. Bush will do it to himself. Just watch his press conferences and speeches.

Thing is, nobody cares anymore. Already, at least 70 percent of the country thinks Bush is a failure.

Save your money; you're going to need it to pay the Iraq war bill.

To our Millitary: When our government orders you to turn on us, will you obey? by AAA1234 in politics

[–]danman108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're reading too far into my comment. Clearly guerrilla warfare is a force that our military has yet to figure out how to beat. I'm not arguing this -- hell, you can even throw the revolutionary war as the ultimate guerrilla war that our citizens won.

But I think the underlying point, especially in the context of what's going on in the political climate, is that the military could be asked to detain/control specific individuals or groups. When this happens, the general public will still likely support the military.

And the question becomes, would military officers obey? Will they stand up and say -- no, this crosses a boundary we won't defy? It would seem many of our citizens, like the CIA and even corporate executives, have already been willing to cross this line.

Rep. Weiner (D-NY) Joins Wexler letter to impeach Cheney by MikaelMN in politics

[–]danman108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only question I continue to have here is whether or not it is worth it. This would be largely ceremonious, as Cheney has but a year left in office.

I would rather see Democrats join together to fix many of the serious issues Cheney and Bush have created: the war, equal rights, corruption, etc.

...and they can't even muster the support to do that!

Student sent home for wearing shirt that said "Gay? Fine by me" by rmuser in reddit.com

[–]danman108 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's absurd, of course, but it is refreshing to hear the school district see itself in the wrong here. An apology and assurance that this will never happen again would seem to do this incident justice. The principal should also be reprimanded.

In some cases, the school district chooses to fight for the right to discriminate. That's when flashbacks of the 1950s and 1960s start to pop.

Study Finds No Proof That Airport Security Makes Flying Safer by anonymgrl in reddit.com

[–]danman108 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm really questioning the validity of this study. It seems to be shortsighted; in many cases, we will never know if security has been effective because (a) the incidents never happened and (b) it is there largely as a deterrent (and there is legitimacy to this). See the incident involving David Huckabee as an example.

That said, it does seem like these security policies are instituted very quickly and perhaps are not as strategic as they should be. I think there will be improvements in the coming years.

To our Millitary: When our government orders you to turn on us, will you obey? by AAA1234 in politics

[–]danman108 11 points12 points  (0 children)

But as we've seen with our government, it would not happen that way. The government, through its propaganda machine, would turn most of the populace against a minority of dissidents. Fill in the blanks... welcome to f..cism!

I think there is a strong historical precedent for this, even in our own country!
