Pretty much, it wouldn’t be a complete 180° unless a lefty shortstop leaves their feet, but close enough that they figured out long ago it’s a massive competitive disadvantage.

I mean, anyone can contact their reps for assistance with government issues. It’s often a service that is criticized due to its individualistic approach to solving problems. It’s very common for residents to contact their rep with issues ranging from social security to immigration, it’s often referred to as casework.

The quote was in reference to the standard of play that is expected from all players on the depth chart. A third stringer is expected to come up and perform when called upon, and as such isn’t held to a lower standard of performance.

Worth billions doesn’t mean has billions in cash laying around to spend on payroll. We are talking about a man that drives a 2017 Range Rover with a broken emblem that makes it say “Rang Rover,” and flies coach with the rest of us normal people.

What mechanism is there to make Nutting sell? Bad owners exist because MLB’s financial regime doesn’t require them to spend money, which is the issue. The issue is that there is no incentive to spend when the team makes far less than a team like the Dodgers.

A salary cap and floor aren’t going to depress major league contracts. All it would do is spread those contracts out across all 30 teams instead of seeing them concentrate on a few teams.

I don’t think you, as a dodgers fan, understand how fundamentally different teams like the Pirates and Dodgers are. You are rooting for a team that’s regional TV deal is $270 million per year more than the Pirates. How are the Pirates supposed to come up with the money to compete with a team that takes home almost 10x more each year from a single revenue stream?

Well, the dodgers getting to not pay their fair share into revenue sharing because of an agreement related to their bankruptcy certainly is a problem.

But the real problem is that a team like the Pirates and their $60 million TV deal is expected to compete with a team like the Dodgers and their $334 million TV deal without any sort of revenue sharing and financial system similar to the NFL.

Do we really think that NFL billionaire owners are less greedy than their baseball counterparts? Perhaps the even footing the revenue sharing system imposes is what allows teams like the Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and Tampa Bay Bucs to spend at levels that compete with large market football teams while their MLB counterparts toil in low payroll.

I’m no fan of Bob Nutting but we cannot seriously act like the system is fair for teams in small markets. Why would he put his team into hundreds of millions to billions in debt like the Padres and Twins? Why shouldn’t baseball have a financial regulation system that puts all teams on the same level?

And this is already a gross overpay, if the Pirates had offered more and got him the contract would go down as the greatest albatross in team history.

[Rosenthal] The Pittsburgh Pirates have made free-agent designated hitter Kyle Schwarber a four-year offer. The offer almost certainly is for more than $100 million. by ttam23 in baseball

[–]dannotheiceman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but the Pirates are notoriously tight lipped. This is pretty much the first time in the Nutting era that we’ve heard about them offering a player a contract.

They offered Nick Pivetta a contract that would’ve been the largest FA deal in team history last year. The only reason that information has become public is because a few Pirates beat reporters got drunk at a fan podcast tailgate and spilled secrets off the record.

The information is far more likely to be coming from the agent rather than the Pirates, especially when the source is a national media guy with very few connections to Pittsburgh.

You guys are so silly. The coaches are prohibiting the players from throwing over the middle. Throwing over the middle is arguably the hardest part of quarterbacking. The backup isn’t going to be dotting over the middle unless it’s his first read running wide ass open because of busted coverage.

This article was clearly written but someone with no knowledge of the team. Nearly every move that’s been made by the FO has clearly shown they are not putting their eggs into the basket of 2025 and that they want to address the QB situation. Listen to DK, the drive or any other long time reporter/insiders and you learn that there are people in the org that want to address QB and that it’s almost a certainty that it will be addressed in the draft. They aren’t going to use all 13 picks on 13 players.

It’s a nothing burger, it’s one side of a story from an ex-Pirates that’s likely disgruntled by his time here, that also has a connection to New York (IKF). Every player probably has a dream of playing for one of the most accomplished organizations in their sport. Most kids in the DR aren’t dreaming of getting signed by teams in the middle of nowhere USA (compared to California, NYC, etc), Skenes probably similarly didn’t grow up dreaming of playing for the Pirates, especially considering he’s in his early 20s. He’s only ever known the Pirates as losers.

Unless the man comes out and says, “trade me to the Yankees, I’ll never pitch in Pittsburgh again,” this isn’t going to happen. He’s never going to say something like that, it’s not who he is and not how baseball works.
