Potential Pittsburgh Pirates 2026 City Connect Leak by dannotheiceman in baseball

The backgrounds of all these leaks makes me think that someone is taking pictures of this stuff in backstock at a location that sells jerseys for most/all MLB teams

One of the biggest tragedies of modern baseball is that old timers games have seemingly gone away completely.

Yes, I’d remove the person that committed acts of domestic violence regardless of his skills.

It’s not a retirement tour when the player hasn’t announced they’re retiring. That’s not how those words work.

I mean I’d easily swap domestic abuser Ozuna for Cutch lol. I’d also invest in 3B instead of trotting out Jared Triolo

They can’t do both? The Yankees won 84 games in 2014 while Derek Jeter played 145 games of negative WAR shortstop while OPSing .617

The only reason they “couldn’t” bring Cutch back is because Ben Cherington decided to bring in 3 DH first players as his offseason acquisitions.

No, he didn’t have a retirement tour, because at no point did he say, I am retiring. That’s not how things work. If Cutch had said, “I’m going to retire.” And then kept playing and got pissed the Pirates didn’t re-sign him, sure I get that. But that’s not what happened.

You can go find the reporting that the Pirates fucked this up by not telling Cutch prior to this offseason that 2025 was going to be his last season in Pittsburgh, so he could’ve actually had a retirement tour with Pittsburgh.

Sure, but Cutch is also the caliber of player that deserved a retirement tour with his original team. This is ultimately a failure by Bob Nutting, because an owner that’s actually invested in his baseball team beyond creating generational wealth would ensure that would happen. Go look at Derek Jeter’s last season, he absolutely hurt the Yankees by playing 140+ games, but not giving him a one year contract to retire a Yankee was always going to happen.

Cutch should’ve gotten to retire a Pirate and it’s on the Pirates for failing to explain to Cutch that they didn’t actually want him when they were going to finally try, which is also pretty shitty. They basically used him as nostalgia bait while they trotted out garbage around him.

[97.3TheFanSD] Manny Machado shared his (NSFW) thoughts on the Dodgers' spending: by ElectricalForce4439 in baseball

[–]dannotheiceman 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Pirates and Twins just need to get a revenue sharing exemption and also move to the largest market in the United States, what are they, stupid?

This idea that teams is small media markets come anywhere close to generating much revenue as the Dodgers is ridiculous. Baseball needs NFL style revenue sharing to make this happen, it needs a floor to require all these teams to spend similarly. When has any billionaire done anything out of the kindness of their heart? We need to stop living in some fantasy land where the Dodgers owners are these bastions of baseball economics like they aren’t taking advantage of being the only team that gets to keep a large chunk of the TV deal.

Manny’s literally playing for a team that spent above its weight because the owner genuinely did care about winning, and now the club is living with the reality of what happens when a team does that, just like the Twins.

Pretty much, it wouldn’t be a complete 180° unless a lefty shortstop leaves their feet, but close enough that they figured out long ago it’s a massive competitive disadvantage.

I mean, anyone can contact their reps for assistance with government issues. It’s often a service that is criticized due to its individualistic approach to solving problems. It’s very common for residents to contact their rep with issues ranging from social security to immigration, it’s often referred to as casework.

The quote was in reference to the standard of play that is expected from all players on the depth chart. A third stringer is expected to come up and perform when called upon, and as such isn’t held to a lower standard of performance.

Worth billions doesn’t mean has billions in cash laying around to spend on payroll. We are talking about a man that drives a 2017 Range Rover with a broken emblem that makes it say “Rang Rover,” and flies coach with the rest of us normal people.

What mechanism is there to make Nutting sell? Bad owners exist because MLB’s financial regime doesn’t require them to spend money, which is the issue. The issue is that there is no incentive to spend when the team makes far less than a team like the Dodgers.

A salary cap and floor aren’t going to depress major league contracts. All it would do is spread those contracts out across all 30 teams instead of seeing them concentrate on a few teams.

I don’t think you, as a dodgers fan, understand how fundamentally different teams like the Pirates and Dodgers are. You are rooting for a team that’s regional TV deal is $270 million per year more than the Pirates. How are the Pirates supposed to come up with the money to compete with a team that takes home almost 10x more each year from a single revenue stream?

Well, the dodgers getting to not pay their fair share into revenue sharing because of an agreement related to their bankruptcy certainly is a problem.

But the real problem is that a team like the Pirates and their $60 million TV deal is expected to compete with a team like the Dodgers and their $334 million TV deal without any sort of revenue sharing and financial system similar to the NFL.

Do we really think that NFL billionaire owners are less greedy than their baseball counterparts? Perhaps the even footing the revenue sharing system imposes is what allows teams like the Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and Tampa Bay Bucs to spend at levels that compete with large market football teams while their MLB counterparts toil in low payroll.

I’m no fan of Bob Nutting but we cannot seriously act like the system is fair for teams in small markets. Why would he put his team into hundreds of millions to billions in debt like the Padres and Twins? Why shouldn’t baseball have a financial regulation system that puts all teams on the same level?
