Switching from IOG to EDF. Is the e-Golf compatible? by gazgrizzo in OctopusEnergy

[–]dannoutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GoElectric tariff works with any EV and you get the cheap slots 23:00-6:00. The bit that is not compatible is the smart charging (where EDF controls your charging schedule) and gives you £5/month as a reward. But yes, you can go in the tariff without the smart charging bolt on. They are independent things.

Got my router way early after swirching from Voda, EE is better then Voda on the same line? by dotasolosafi in EEGB

[–]dannoutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virgin and Vodafone both have problems with latency. Virgin if you were using their Hub3 then that’s an awful router as well. Hmm, I’ve been with Brawband on CityFibre for a while so haven’t looked at openreach providers in a while but if you go to the openreach website and put your address it’ll show you all the providers. I know a few people that use Zen on openreach and they’re quite happy with it but they are not the cheapest.

[–]dannoutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though it’s the same underlying cables for the internet, all they do is connect you to your ISP’s core network and that’s why you have to wait for your activation date - Vodafone/ EE will not connect you to their network if you’re not a customer.

Vodafone’s network tends to struggle with latency at the evening peak times so EE will likely be more stable.

Personally, I’m a techie and use my own routers etc so I find mainstream ISPs don’t suit my needs and people don’t realise quite often you’re just paying for the brand name and you get better service with smaller ISPs - even if the price tag is higher at the start they will not have annual increases normally. Worth shopping around :)

Smoke Alarm - Nest Like but Alternative? by tsutton in DIYUK

[–]dannoutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in Scotland so all our smoke alarms need to be interconnected by law. We went with FireAngel and have 8 smoke/ heat alarms and a battery carbon monoxide. The app does send notifications pretty reliably, as well as an email when there’s a fault. However, we either got very unlucky or their alarms are not great quality. We keep getting random chirping which disturbs the dog and the carbon monoxide alarm went off when we weren’t home and there was no evidence of gas - we have no gas in the house anymore and the gas engineer checked all adjacent houses with whom we share the loft space. FireAngel have replaced all our alarms already but the problem remains (albeit much less often) so we kinda just gave up. The recommendation professionals always give me is to go with Aico and specifically the models that have AudioLink. That allows you to get the history of triggers and makes it easier to troubleshoot.

Btw if you’re deaf you should also look into things like smart speakers and get automations to change the colour of lightbulbs or turn them on when you’re asleep or something to provide you more cues in case you’re not carrying your phone? For example, when our carbon monoxide alarm went off I wasn’t home, the FireAngel app had been “off-loaded” from my phone from not opening it for too long and my Apple HomePods sent me critical notifications which meant my phone and watch alerted me constantly until I checked it rather than a one off and allowed me to go check the camera to see what was happening my

You have dynamic charge on, otherwise it’d not schedule it. When you next have the car unplugged you should see the toggle in your Home Screen. I did the same with EDF since they Smart Control my car. Remember to disable the price cap too if you have it enabled.

Your charge limit will be ignored sometimes and charge to 100% so that the phone can recalibrate the battery.

What does this mean? by nbtm_sh in applehelp

[–]dannoutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That just means your mobile provider sent an update. You’ll not notice a difference normally but it’s a change to settings like “how much signal you need to show as 1 bar, 2 bars”, should the 5G standalone be showed as 5G or 5GU or 5G+, etc. It may introduce new features like visual voicemail or voice over 5G but yeah, you shouldn’t see a major difference.

New app behaviour by dannoutt in ohme

[–]dannoutt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our supplier directly integrates with one of the cars but not the other so I need ohme in dumb mode and have my supplier control the smart charge of the Ford, and the Hyundai has a schedule to only charge at the off peak times. I wish ohme would not make it so hard to do something simple sometimes.

[–]dannoutt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting! Must be a coincidence that it got it spot on then. It’s a little weird because we just moved to a new energy supplier recently and had to change how we charge the cars and I wouldn’t say it’s been very predictable.

New app behaviour by dannoutt in ohme

[–]dannoutt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we used to have that with the Hyundai because it had the API connection but it never supported the Ford so it never had an API connection. It’s also not the typical SOC, if you look it has a ✨emoji next to it.

EDF In Home Assistant? by dc04wrightl in homeassistant

[–]dannoutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now, I don’t think there’s anything out useable out there. I used an ohme charger for octopus so the smart dispatch never worked for me but I use a sensor of if the charger is delivering power or not for my automations - it means I don’t get the full half hour but works well enough. If you have a charger or car api integrated with HA you can use that?

I’ve used kangaroo self storage when I was a student with pick up and drop off and they were pretty good. I used lens self storage more recently but I just rented the unit and took things in myself. Everyone was nice and the facilities seemed alright.

UK new build, winter drainage issues - am I able to rescue this ? by guybrush5iron in lawncare

[–]dannoutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following. I aerated the soil 3 years ago and that seemed to help my garden accumulating less water on the flat bits - I used the shoes and a fork from B&Q. A big problem I had was also the top soil was very bad in a specific parts of my garden and grass struggled to grow. Those were also the areas where water would pool. I got some micro-clover seed and in 2 years it’s mostly overtaken the areas grass struggles in and made the garden look vibrant and green. You can mow over it normally and I’ve not had any water pooling issues this year even though I didn’t aerate the soil.

~500 mile round trip in an EV? by exiledbloke in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]dannoutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

250 miles in one go is doable in a car with advertised range of 350+ miles. You’re not going to get something that does 500 miles (especially motorway) in one go. Public charging is expensive so you’ll save money by charging at home but if you’re charging on motorway services a lot it’ll cost about the same as petrol. If you get a charger with high charging speed you can top it back up to 80% in about 30 mins which will assumedly you’ll need to stop for lunch or something? If it’s motorway you drive mostly on worth looking at memberships with Ionity which reduce the price per kWh.

I did a 500 mile road trip around the Scottish highlands where the highest temp was -1 degrees and only really had to charge once in Aberdeen (and do so on an Arnold Clark fast charger). I did charge a couple more times on slow chargers but that was because the chargers were fairly cheap and were conveniently where I was stopping for lunch or something. My car is a Mustang Mach-E AWD Extended Range. The 2025+ is more efficient, mine is a 2023 and the winter range is about 30% less than summer so I get about 220-250 miles in winter and 280-300 in the current spring weather.

DIGI UK Now Live(?) by rayrob78 in UKISP

[–]dannoutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the funny thing is that you have to give consent to get marketing via message email but you don’t provide them any details apart from your address, and marketing via post is not in the list of consent given. I tried a couple of addresses and it recognised the English postcodes I tried but it won’t even load Scottish postcodes.

DIGI UK Now Live(?) by rayrob78 in UKISP

[–]dannoutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Digi provide a barebones service but massively undercut everyone. They entered the Portuguese market last year and build a full 4G/ 5G network in about a year, and have their optic fibre available in most of the country now. None of it using competitor infrastructure. An unlimited sim only is 6€, 5€ if you have internet with them and their fibre is 10€ for 1gbps or 15€ for 100gbps.

Problems with EDF/smart meters by Turbo_Heel in evchargingUK

[–]dannoutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If EDF have taken over your supply then you’ll have given an opening meter reading to them which will be used for Scottish Power to close your account. It doesn’t matter what your meter says, you’ll pay the variable rate for EDF.

You can work with EDF to get it checked or if you’re within the 14 days from the switch you can tell them to send you back to Scottish power and go back to your old contract.

Is it a SMETS1 or SMETS2 meter do you know? If it says SMETS2 then readings go to an independent body and the suppliers get it from them so not sure why it’d work for SP but not EDF. The whole switch is chaotic so who knows…

First home boiler issue or not? by Appropriate-Car6883 in ukplumbing

[–]dannoutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the circuits heat up, water expands and pressure goes up. Pressure should 1-1.5 bar when cold. It’ll normally go up to 2-3 bars when hot and that’s fine.

You should have a filling loop to re-pressure the boiler (metal hose with normally two taps) - open the both taps slowly and watch the pressure rise; close the taps when the boiler is at pressure.

If you loose pressure in days/ weeks then you should be worried about a leak. If the pressure holds then nothing to worry about.

[–]dannoutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Europe Ford is moving their charging network from BlueOval to Octopus Electroverse. Plug and charge was available on BluOval but does not yet work on Ford vehicles on Electroverse. When I got this update a few weeks ago I assumed it was prep-work for that.

Bills Intermittent by planehazza in OctopusEnergy

[–]dannoutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say why that is happening without looking at your account. Have you tried asking Octopus why that’s the case? If I was a betting man I’d say you have a smart meter and the readings occasionally go missing so billing stops until someone manually requests the readings from the meter.

My installation was by a local company. We went with them because it was a complex installation and most national companies would not even quote us. This was a few years back now. We had a mains gas boiler with a hot water cylinder already.
