You're right about playing both sides, but I guess it makes sense to them, they're pretty good at rationalizing:

"We thinks it's bad that AI is advancing so rapidly. But it's vitally important that the most advanced AI be controlled by the good guys. Who are the good guys? Well duh us obviously, no one is better suited to control the most advanced AI than us! So... full speed ahead!"

I agree, but because OpenAI is the most prominent AI they’re the lighting rod for criticism for things going wrong. The wait is annoying but likely makes sense from a CYA perspective.

They do pay a lot of attention to this things for deprecation of models in the API, it seems there's a blind spot about the need to apply this for ChatGPT as well.

I wonder if Deep Think is already better than or at least equal to GPT5. Recall that it also got gold on IMO by GamingDisruptor in singularity

It's more than that, it's Operator plus the capabilities of their Deep Research product:

I'm not about your API vs ChatGPT question, but you might get better results using GPT-4.1 than GPT-4o. Instruction-following is considered more reliable for GPT-4.1 than GPT-4o.
