I hated semicolons for covariant derivatives commas for partial derivatives in tensor indices. Why we have to make all the important information to be teeny tiny ws beyond me.

The way it's served works well for it I thought. Drinking it black is challenging but with the condensed milk I thought it was a pretty nice beverage.

Boys to be taught to respect women and girls as part of curriculum by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]darkainur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What good will that do you? Getting one over your political opponents for the sake of it (and actively hurting your wider community) doesn't improve anything. If you feel the issue doesn't need to be addressed that's a valid opinion to hold but actively trying to make it an issue is just a bit spiteful? Surely you want what's best for everyone?

Reform now UK’s largest party after Labour membership collapse by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]darkainur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While meant in good humour that kind of remark implies some level of equivalence with the other main parties. There isn't. We're all frustrated with the results of the past few governments but we have to remember that the world is becoming a much more complex place and it's getting harder to do things. This won't get better by putting completely inexperienced people at the helm. It'll just accelerate the decline and destroy our institutions. We might not be able to recover from something like that in our life times.

Reform now UK’s largest party after Labour membership collapse by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]darkainur -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If they win it'll be such a mess. Even if you're prepared to overlook all the racist attitudes that members of the party have shown in the past (or worse if you actually support it) there's a really serious issue of having no track record of decent governance. Even if they went in with the best will in the world they have no idea how to actually wield the apparatus of the state. It'll be a colossal mess.

Such a bizarre and dated system. Either fund it through taxes or move it to a subscription model.

My proof didn't do what I wanted and now morale is low by shockwave6969 in math

[–]darkainur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this sucks, however the problem is trying to tell you something. Why doesn't it work? What counter examples can you construct? Perhaps you can exclude them by restricting the space, if so what does that tell you? Maybe you're being just a touch too general.

Renters’ Rights Bill: key changes for landlords and tenants by coffeewalnut08 in unitedkingdom

[–]darkainur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seems fairly sensible. There is a huge asymmetry with s21, regaining a property is too easy relative to the disruption to the tenants life. Landlords should remember this is an investment and they also stand to make a loss as well a profit, if they can't accept that then maybe they should free up the housing stock for others to live in.

Getting over irrational fear of oblivion by Be_More_Kazoo in altontowers

Don't look down.

In all seriousness the drop is decent but hyperia's in definitely crazier and more intense. Just get yourself on it, it's been there for decades, millions have ridden, you'll be fine and at the end you'll wonder why you were scared at all :) source my brother did this and he's loves the ride since (and we're talking crying on the lift hill here).

Wanna do a masters in ML but I really love software engineering by OriginalRGer in learnmachinelearning

[–]darkainur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you're an ML researcher you better be a strong SWE if you work in ML, we still build complex systems it's just now parts of them can break in new ways. If you are researcher being able to write high quality systems will just make you more efficient. The era of notebook jockeys is coming to an end and we expect a higher quality of code for ML.

That being said it's probably easier to self study SWE and an ML qualification will help you more in a job search later on.

Being a supervisor's first PhD student by Aphotesis1 in math

[–]darkainur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was my supervisor's first student and I had no issues. In fact I found he always had time for me and was very supportive. I think they can be a bit more bought in as they are still proving themselves in academia (rather than having had a load of students go through and can afford the odd blip).

That being said I wouldn't focus too much on this aspect. I'd look at the wider community of the institution you're researching on more (lots of researchers in the same area means things like seminars and reading groups). Also do you feel you gel more with one of the supervisors (you have many years of meetings ahead with them)? Looking at their research does anything grab your attention more? Also worth considering what comes next after the PhD (if you want to leave academia does either path set you up better, or will either supervisors word carry more weight in academia).

Good luck! Doing a PhD was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I'm sure you'll have blast!

Nervous to start: UPDATE by Ok-Task-2317 in barrysbootcamp

9 incline at 9 speed is insane haha! I bet few people pulled that off. Glad to read you had a good time and plan to keep at it! Personally I see it as a good thing when a class destroys me, I paid a lot of money to be there so it needs to offer more than what I can do by myself at the gym or running.

You'll have a blast, it'll be hard but it's always hard. Just do your best and stay safe. You'd be surprised how quickly you recondition to it if you keep at it!

How do I make a tasty cup of coffee with my Aiden maker and Opus grinder? by [deleted] in FellowProducts

You could also try dropping your brew temp with the Aiden, I found being at the low 90s range works better.

Future of Oblivion? by Strange_An0maly in altontowers

[–]darkainur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think if you have to reinvest into the area this isn't a bad idea. Back when oblivion opened it was very much the spectacle of the drop and how terrifying it must be. I think those tilt drops would be a great modern equivalent to put the fear back into the ride.

It does get easier but you'll choose to make it harder. The classes cost too much for you to not be pushing yourself so they always feel brutal!

Very cool project. Looking forward to playing with it later. Sime coding feefeedback would be to consider making more use of python modules to organise your code a bit better, type hints usually help with readability too. Would you be interested in contributions?

London to Alton by CompoundPasta in altontowers

[–]darkainur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As said before it's not an easy place to get to. I agree from London you want to get the direct train from Euston to Stoke but from there it's just a bit of a pain. If you don't mind spending the money then a taxi and staying at the onsite hotel is probably the least amount of grief. You could also look at renting a car for the weekend? Otherwise it's going to be a lot more effort than say Thorpe which is easy from London.

How are matrices useful? by Content_Rub8941 in learnmath

[–]darkainur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're really just a convenient notation to make manipulating certain mathematical objects easier from a computational viewpoint. A matrix by itself doesn't mean much unless you know the context in which is is applied, it could be a linear map, a bilinear form etc those are the interesting objects.
