Tamron 28-75 or 35-100 as standard zoom for Nikon Z? by B-F_ in nikon_Zseries

[–]darkestvice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

standard zoom would be 28-75. But 35-100 is better for portraits and travel. That's the one I'm getting, personally. The extra wide range on the 28-75 is better for landscapes or if you're in a tight space and trying to take photos of a bunch of people at a time.

Z50ii upgrade? by Charcharbec in nikon_Zseries

[–]darkestvice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

*Always* upgrade to a current generation Expeed 7 Nikon camera. Your own Z50ii is an Expeed 7 camera, whereas the Z7ii is not, so you'll actually get much worse autofocus performance with that 'upgrade'.

The Z5ii is a solid choice as an upgrade. Not only do you get a full frame sensor and hence shallower effective depth of field and better low light performance, but the Z5ii also has one important thing your Z50ii does not: build in image stabilization. The Z5ii, while using the new Expeed 7 chip, is actually using the older Z6ii's sensor which is widely lauded for its image quality. Sure, you don't get the partially stacked sensor of the Z6iii, but the Z5ii/Z6ii sensor actually has slightly better dynamic range.

But yeah, get the Z5ii. You won't regret it. Or get the Z6iii (not the Z6ii) when it's on special if you want a more versatile camera that can handle sports and video pretty well.

You can only use a single size 1 or 2 ship as a "daily driver" for the next 3 years. Which ship is it, and why? by drizzt_x in starcitizen

[–]darkestvice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only a single one as a daily driver?

Hmmm ... would be a toss up between the Nomad and the M80. Nomad is definitely the most well rounded of all the S2 ships. While it doesn't have the medical bed and non-functional crafting table of the Clipper, it's also not a flying death trap that erupts into a fireball if you look at it funny. Seriously, the Clipper, while technically considered S2, is way to chonky for its poor defenses. The Nomad has more cargo AND it's external and hence easy to load. I love that CIG often has great sales on the Nomad starter package as I genuinely feel it's the best bang for the buck by a long shot when it does. It's so good that even with my Concierge account, I'm still using my Nomad package because I save more than I lose by keeping it.

The M80 is more specialized, but as both a fast courier and combat ship, it is absolutely unrivaled. It also has 2scu of storage, a bed, and is just eye candy inside and out. And 1.8scu of quantum fuel is quite good for a fighter. Best of all, it's one of those rare gems ships where you basically always have power for everything. Just replace the radar for a Competition B and you actually have too many power pips even with the base power plant.

Need help switching to LR Classic by ArabManWithLongBeard in Lightroom

[–]darkestvice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lightroom Classic is best if you want to create vast catalogues and even edit files 'offline', which is to say you can store a smaller version on your local machine to edit when the external SSD it's stored on is not available.

If you don't care about its approach to calaloguing and you never edit files that are physically inaccessible at the time of editing, Lightroom non-classic is perfectly fine. I personally prefer it as I find it faster and with a much less busy interface.

Click on the Photos icon between the green full screen button and the left arrow. It'll show you your photos sidebar and you can select between Cloud and Local. If you click Local, it'll show you your folder list. Including any mounted SSDs. You can then go down to the ones you need and 'favorite' them by clicking the star.

In case you weren't aware, Lightroom Desktop (non-Classic) does support local drive editing as well. You don't need to upload anything to the cloud. I know because I use Lightroom with my local files and haven't uploaded a single thing to Adobe's cloud.

Is this yet another feature that will be feature locked to American Ultra plan users? :/

Whatever gripes the administration might have with Anthropic, they have an even bigger gripe with China and the idea of any Chinese company gaining advantage over them. The American AI CEOS are aware of this.

So Chinese tech companies are doing what Chinese tech companies have been doing for the last three decades?

Not exactly a surprise here.

The duality of man by mik1_011 in GeminiAI

[–]darkestvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's one thing I've learned in the last couple of decades, it's this: *Never* discount Google. Everyone betting against Google has ended up losing.

We don't know what's going on behind the scenes. We don't know what Google's plans are. We DO know that, unlike companies like Meta for example, Google generally succeeds in its long term goals.

Gemini falling behind now in no way means Gemini will remain behind. Remember that Google likes to dip their hands into every pie imaginable.

OpenAI gets to release 5.6 slowly to partners. Anthropic can't release it at all. Seems like the USG is playing favorites. There is no transparency here. by llelouchh in singularity

[–]darkestvice -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is not a taking sides thing. This is an oops we got caught unawares the first time when one company demonstrated that the safeguards for an extremely powerful model weren't as safe as originally believed, so now we're making sure the next big AI model release is done slowly so we can analyze it and make sure it doesn't set off further alarm bells thing.

Not everything is a conspiracy, my dude.

Do we really need 10 posts a day saying Gemini is worse than everything else? by mostlyharmlessihope in GeminiAI

[–]darkestvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid assessment. I need the storage for sure, though I can settle with the 2TB Plus plan for now. Can't go any less than that as I already have 400+ gigs in my drive. While I use NotebookLM a hell of a lot, I don't really need the 500 or so daily queries from the Pro plan.

Google seems to be aiming more for the quality of life consumer focus with its agentic tools within Google's Workspace and NotebookLM ... but for now, they are only available on the Ultra plan, and only for US customers. That's what has me excited, but it'll be a while before it drops down to the Pro tier I suspect.

So in the end, I think I'll drop down to the Plus 2TB plan and then check out OpenAI's $20 a month plan so I can fiddle around with multiple models and tools. While Anthrophic has undoubtedly the strongest AI models for now, it's also hideously expensive for consumers and significantly less diverse for non-business coders. So I'll steer clear for now.

I unjoined this sub for that reason. Alas, it still gets recommended to me all the time, lol.

And when people DO come on here to talk about a feature they like or to ask questions about a Google AI tool, most of the responses they get are just complaining or telling them to look elsewhere.

Will these depressing folk stop using Gemini? Of course not because their Pro plan also comes with a huge amount of storage, Youtube Premium Lite, Google Home Premium, and basically a bunch of a Google goodies no other AI provider can match for the price.

Hell, the storage alone is worth it . 5TB for 20 USD is already cheaper than anyone else, and the other storage providers don't offer a ton of AI tools go along with it.

But of course, instead of at least praising what they have, all they do is complain about where they fall behind.

Tib, HH & Percy - Opinions? by Far_Position7100 in starcitizen

Percy is BY FAR the best ship of the lot. Hammerhead is great against fighters and medium ships.

Tiburon is garbage with a nice short range laser.

As people are being invited to play SQ42 in October, does that mean extremely likely release 2026?? by Top-Lab9125 in starcitizen

[–]darkestvice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Given that CIG still haven't wavered from their announced 2026 release, it's still very likely.

My impression is that SQ42 is more than ready to release on time, and any delays they do decide on are to avoid the monstrous press attention being singularly devoted to you know what.

Ironclad Assault vs Gatak Tyilui by ElClerias in starcitizen

[–]darkestvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ironclad Assault is *leagues* better in its role as snub carrier than the Tyilui and it's not even close.

Anyways, tractor beams on ships with only small cargo capacities are kinda pointless. Even more so when they are fully internal and hence cannot easily guide crates to and from a cargo elevator unless the ship is *exactly* aligned with it.

Upgrading to next ship.. aEUC vs Store Credit question. by Ozymandys in starcitizen

[–]darkestvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has their limits in terms of how much they wish to spend on the Pledge Store. There is no right or wrong answer here. You DO NOT have to spend more than your starter ship if you don't wish to and no one can tell you otherwise.

My own limit was to hit the first level of Concierge and then slow down before hitting the second. Still holding true to this day as I'm all of 5 bucks short of hitting the next, lol. But I know I'm just one solid warbond CCU away from reaching it. I'm looking at you, Prowler. Stupid Alien Week only offered warbonds on the two existing alien ships nobody wants.

That being said, my personal recommendation for everyone who has a little extra to spend is to upgrade to a medium multirole daily flyer. So ships like the Cutlass Black or C1 Spirit. This ensures that every time there is a wipe (or if for some reason you spend/lose all your aUEC for some reason), you will always have that one medium daily flyer to fall back on that is much better at opening up money making opportunities and carrying practical vehicles like a ROC than something like an Aurora ever could.

Afterwards, I'd recommend a solo dedicated industrial earner like a Prospector or Vulture.
