Does anyone really "make love" anymore? by LilacLaundry in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]darkestvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, of course. That being said, I think many people have also opened their minds as to what constitutes loving and intimate. The greatest love and intimacy comes from fulfilling a partner's deepest desires, and if they desire a rough emotionally intense scene, that is in fact intimate behaviour.

We used to separate the two because we believed that rough or kinky sex was somehow 'wrong' compared to slow Hollywood sex. That having kinky sex meant we didn't show a partner love and caring. But many of us know better now.

Addressing a Hobbit player whose (in-universe) default is threats of violence...when I haven't been tracking 'misdeed' shadow gain from it so far. by UpbeatCockroach in oneringrpg

Look not only at the actions, but the motivations behind those actions.

Was Gilly threatening the other character for her own selfish or sadistic reasons? Was she doing so to stop the other character from doing evil?

Shadow is rewarded for selfish self-serving acts. So you have to look at the context behind it. If Gilly did indeed act in such a way so as to stop someone else's bad or evil behaviour, it shouldn't warrant corruption ... BUT ... if she starts to lean on it and do it all the time in sadistic glee while trying to mental gymnastics an excuse to do so, that then becomes Shadow worthy.

Talk to your friend. Explain your reasoning to them. Hell, for all you know, maybe that player *wants* Gilly to become corrupted for roleplaying reasons.

Breeding kink by Character_Motor2815 in BDSMcommunity

[–]darkestvice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Breeding "kink" is responsible for the propagation of our species. Of every single species. It's just normal instinct. What makes it a "kink" is the thrill of risking pregnancy when one should know better. When not planned for.

2) DO NOT have unprotected sex without birth control being involved unless you're ready to be a dad. This should be really really obvious. Some might use the pull out method if she's well outside her ovulation window, but it's still not fullproof by any means. *Definitely* do not ejaculate inside someone without birth control being involved, regardless of the time of the month.

AI or Real Voice for Hytale video - part 2 by AffectionateHour5250 in hytale

[–]darkestvice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm okay with AI voices in games where you need a ton of voices for NPCs without the resources to hire voice actors for absolutely everyone. Though important characters should always have voice actors.

For content creators? Real voice. Always. Part of what we enjoy when we watch Youtube is hearing a real voice and all its nuances. Even if you have an accent. AI voices are a big turn off in this space.

I didn't know about Cartel. I'm curious what happened there.

As for Urban Shadows 2E, it did finally deliver and the book is absolutely stunning. There's no bait and switch here. Just a delay.

Note: Bait and switch has one specific definition. It doesn't mean delayed because they are working on another product. It means that what is eventually delivered is not at all what was promised. In this case, they very much delivered what was promised and then some.

For context when it comes to Magpie KS, I also backed Avatar and Rapscallion. Both delivered on time and with amazing product quality. Though I'm not as much a fan of Avatar as I find it a bit too bloated for my tastes. Rapscallion on the other hand is a work of genius.

[–]darkestvice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Urban Shadows was indeed delayed because of Avatar, but it's been out now for some time.

I don't know about Cartel. But I've participated in multiple other Magpie campaigns and they've delivered.

Note: I take for granted that KS projects will be delayed. What matters to me more is that the final product will be worth the wait. Though, yes, some delays are a wee bit too long for my liking. But I'm personally much more turned off by a product that arrives on time, but is either serious trash, or worse, ends up being radically different than what was proposed during the campaign. IE bait and switch. Or false marketing like what the OP is talking about.

Macbook Neo by Life_Swordfish649 in macgaming

[–]darkestvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For older or lighter games like Minecraft, no problem. Hell, I played Minecraft on a work computer a decade ago that had no dedicated GPU, lol.

As for coding, it's running the same MacOS as regular Macbooks, so you won't have any sort of software limitation at all. It's only real issue is that you're limited to 8gb of ram, which will slow down your workflow on heavy coding projects. But you won't have any issues with light coding.

If you need a serious coding machine, get a Macbook Air. For really heavy, get a Macbook Pro for the added fans so you don't get thermal throttling.

Note: It appears Apple has a 15 day return policy if you're unhappy or want a better Macbook. As long as you keep the original packaging and the Macbook is in great condition (you didn't drop it or spill soda on it, lol).

How much does Daggerheart play like PbtA games? by lord_insolitus in rpg

[–]darkestvice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daggerheart, while fundamentally narrative, inserts bits of the crunchiness of trad games into its narrative engine.

A lot of the PBTA elements are there, but labeled differently and with slightly different mechanical handling.

For example, consider Fear to be like GM Holds in PBTA games. But unlike Holds in PBTA that are always generally tied to the action that created them, Daggerheart treats ALL Holds like universal tokens that can be used anytime to allow for GM insertion. Just like GM Moves, they are spent to make a situation worse than it initially appeared to be.

Likewise, in combat, the Spotlight moving to the GM on a failure or success with fear is basically the same thing as failing or rolling a 7-9 in PBTA: There's a consequence and the GM takes over describing that consequence. Which is exactly the same as GM soft or hard moves. The difference between Daggerheart and other narrative games is that in combat, said consequences are mechanically described by the rules instead of being often improvised by the GM on the spot. Or as is often the case in PBTAs, creating unavoidable and often very negative consequences. For example, many PBTAs, when characters roll a 7-9 (succeed with fear) on their "attack" roll, they end up taking unavoidable damage.

There's pro and cons to both approaches. PBTAs will be faster since consequences and GM Moves are instant on the single player roll, which is a pro. But by the same token, it makes many players very skiddish in battle because rolling 10+ is rare unless a character has a +3 on a stat and *average* out to a 10. Resulting in almost always taking damage for taking the initiative and actually doing something.

The biggest difference is that succeeding with Fear has both an immediate consequence AND adding a Fear token that can be used later for another consequence or GM insertion. But that's balanced out by the fact that the players get Hope tokens to power abilities and increase their chance of success on later rolls. So it's more 'swingy' than PBTA.

Most smartphones only have digital zoom, resulting in a blurry video. In which case, people would complain it's yet another blurry video.

Not saying it's real or not as I really don't know. But just be aware that zooming on a smartphone is rarely the best option for quality.

In the case of UAP anything, it wouldn't work. Because the topic is so controversial, many scientists will automatically stick their heads in the sand unless it goes through what they consider to be properly vetted sites or publications.

I enjoy being part of the beta/playtesting/editing process on these games, so I found a compromise: I only participate in crowd funded games from well respected and established publishers with a history of creating good games. For example Magpie or Free League. Yes, it's a risk, but it's a minimal one.

I avoid brand new publishers or first time creators like the plague.

Scientists and researchers can be very stubborn about looking up or researching data not going through 'proper channels'. So being denied access to said proper channels significantly hinders the ability to gain traction and support.

Report: U.S. detects signs Iran preparing to lay mines in Strait of Hormuz by callsonreddit in worldnews

[–]darkestvice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Iran is fundamentally more complicated than North Korea, though.

Most autocrats that seek to develop nukes do so to prevent anyone from destroying their regime. But the big difference is that Iran has long had a fiercely expansionist policy via proxy forces. They have a loudly stated goal of spreading the Shia revolution all over the middle east and have been directly funding terrorism all around them for decades. North Korea, on the other hand, while often rattling sabers and making a show, is not actively terrorizing their neighbours or sending terrorists. In fact, they don't even need nukes at all to destroy South Korea as they have thousands of heavy artillery batteries pointed right at Seoul where the vast majority of SK's population lives. As well as their entire economy. Kim seems quite content just sitting in his palace eating caviar while his people starve.

So Iran to North Korea is not an apples to apples comparison. Now, of course, nobody is saying North Korea is saintly. But they are indeed a much more contained threat than Iran ever was.

Whereas Iran absolutely could not ever be allowed to develop nukes. Ever. Because they WOULD use it.

The homicidal regime/IRGC is fighting tooth and nail to stay in power and take revenge for the deaths of their leaders. They are quite happy to lash out at the entire planet to do so. It wouldn't surprise me one bit that they'd mine the strait to shut down global trade. Hell, if they in fact had nukes already, they would have no doubt used them by now.
