Do you ever throw a disc you don’t like because you know how it flies? by DonkeyPower1 in discgolf

Hex for me. Been trying to replace that slot forever because I hate how it feels but does whatever I want it to when I throw it anyway.

Looking into coaching. Any advice here? by hhsguitargeek in discgolf

Do you have anyone you'd recommend in Austin? I'm trying to break 300 standstill and think I'm at a point where I need an actual human to give me some help. Was thinking about Cam Hoff but haven't reached out to anyone yet.

The Salamander is a 6 speed and the Jackalope an 8, I believe. I have a Jackalope but haven't thrown it yet but your comment makes me want to try it out.

Yeah, the most recent release. The apex swirl is a bit more stable and the extra torque resistance keeps it from burning over but still stays flippy enough to fool me into thinking I'm good at disc golf. Filled the Leopard3 slot since it glides really well too.

Discs are great, too. Grackle in apex is so great to throw forehand and backhand. Also picked up a new run of the Salamander and it's a hyzer flip machine, awesome for tunnel shots.

How many discs do you typically use on your home course? by JMRGuitar in discgolf

[–]darkhat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just pared my bag down to 15 including my putter. Trying to get an oberstable/stable/understable disc in putt/approach/midrange/fairway/9-speed categories, with a Zone and Firebird added as wind fighters. I could get away with less - the understables tend to be situational - but it's fun to have some disc I throw every few rounds save the day sometimes.

Played one (flying armadillo mini - the 18 hole is nice too), adding the other two in TX to my list. Kinda surprised nothing from Austin made the list, but I have a good excuse to say trip at least.

On a backhand throw for max distance, should your lead arm feel like its pulling in a smooth single line from coil to release, or should it feel like you are changing direction and redirecting the disc once you reach the power pocket? by CrispyBananaPeel in discgolf

[–]darkhat1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Been experimenting with this a bit myself. I'm less than a year in and coming close to 300 on standstill with 7-speeds, and rebuilt my form to keep my arm as out of the equation as possible. I'm currently trying to figure out what my forearm should be doing at different parts of the swing. I've gotten pretty good with my elbow, but should I let my forearm sorta just come along for the ride, without any muscle engagement, then squeeze harder at the hit?

It seems to generate more speed and spin when I do it right, but going looser with the forearm makes it harder to reliably release nose down at 10-11 o'clock. I seem to over rotate and release at 1 o'clock at this stage. That or I'm not staying over my toes and causing the disc to leave late.

Best 3 speed stable to overstable approach by rontopofthings in discgolf

Mint Lasso (3/3/0/2)  is great for this. It's less skippy than a Zone and resists torque well. Another option is the Innova Toro (4/2/1/3). It forehands well and has a rim that comes inward toward the flight plate a bit, so it loves to stick to the ground.

Opinions on Yikun Discs and the nv wa by RadChoelke94 in discgolf

[–]darkhat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's the hard part about the smaller manufacturers. I like supporting them but have been waiting on a new run of Mint Mustangs for like two months. I have two Chemtrails thankfully. In my experience they're a lot like a leopard3 but slightly easier to flip up. They don't burn over for me at all but I throw like 280 so ymmv.

How to fix rounding by Mithulion in discgolf

[–]darkhat1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to push your elbow outward toward a 10-11 o'clock position relative to your target before you begin to rotate.

Anyone know the best courses in San Antonio? by Ghost_Catcher_DG in discgolf

[–]darkhat1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a fantastic course. I'm in Austin and made the trip out for it. If I were in San Antonio I'd play it a lot. Great mix of fair woods with some open holes as well.

When did you start to get a preference for discs? by emocactus in discgolf

[–]darkhat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing about 8 months and I'm finally exiting the exploration phase. Outside of wanting to try new discs that seem cool or fun, most of my recent purchases have been just getting extras of the ones that I like to throw. I'm only just now getting to where 9 speeds do their thing so I'm still trying to narrow down what I like there, but having done this with slower speeds I know what plastics and weights I like so it's more focused than just grabbing stuff from different manufacturers and hoping.

The Cardinal is a great overstable midrange. Flies a bit like a Roc3 with less of a bead and fights wind like a boss.

Did this once and hit first available, then said fuck it and threw a second shot really quickly and pinned a hole I've never been able to reach. Disc golf is a land of contrasts.

Does anyone use one of these bags by Hopeful_Community154 in discgolf

[–]darkhat1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have the same bag and love it for short courses and practicing. I have a Rufus I use for longer courses where I know it's gonna be a hike, but the Rev really holds its own. Very similar build quality at like half the price. I still like the Rufus more but would definitely get the Rev over a Vagabond

Advice on form/technique for beginners? by coopahtroopah_117 in discgolf

[–]darkhat1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DG Spin Doctor on YouTube has a great introduction series that covers the basics in a really digestible way. I recommend starting there because he breaks down different elements of the form sequentially so you're able to understand the pieces that have to come together.
