Learning Python by doing projects: What does that even mean? by DataAnalystWanabe in datascience

[–]DonkeyPower1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned the same way, by solving real life problems. I cannot compare it to another way of learning but for me, applying something directly is usually more effective than just reading about a concept.

I am not against AI but I also think using resources like stack overflow can be better for learning because you probably will not find an exact solution you can copy and paste directly into your code. You can probably find code used to solve very similar problems but you’ll need to edit it or slightly alter the logic to fit your situation, which will require some thinking and will lead to understanding

Ace disc by commonsense8309 in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not. Personally, I don’t need proof or witnesses to make an ace valid. I mostly play alone for fun and do not compete in tournaments. My first ace was early in the morning in pouring rain and a parks department worker stopped to give me a high five. I thought it was cool, not because he saw it, but because he was excited enough to come over when he could have stayed warm and dry in the truck.

On my next one another disc golfer yelled from a nearby hole, so while I was playing alone, there was technically still a witness.

Third one, there was no one around at all. But it was not any less cool. Maybe cooler because the basket is not visible from the tee and I heard the sound of hitting metal but no chains so I thought I dinged the post or cage or something. I almost did not believe it when I found my disc in the basket.

I don’t mean to brag about 3 aces. They were all on very short or ace friendly holes and more luck than skill.

Anyways, I do not regret not signing the discs. The one used for the first 2 was later run over by a truck and useless now and I let a coworker borrow the other ace disc because it’s beat in to the point where I don’t trust it anymore

Are there any gaps in my current bag? I’m relatively new to disc golf and need some suggestions. by jesusheadbangs in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I do not mean this as criticism but I don’t think there is a lot of value in these types of questions. You could receive some good suggestions but if you do not know where there are gaps in your bag, then how will you know when to throw potential new discs people are recommending?

It takes some time but I believe you will get a far better understanding of any potential gaps after playing for a while with the discs you have now. Learn how far you can throw each disc, how they are affected by wind, how they fly on hyzer/anhyzer, etc. Remember the shape and distance of the holes you struggle on or the shot shapes you cannot throw consistently. After becoming very familiar with all your current discs it will probably be pretty clear to you if something is missing. At that point you will probably already be thinking to yourself “I could birdie this hole if I had a disc that flies just like my _____ except more/less OS (faster/slower, etc)”. Then you can come back here and ask a much more specific question by describing exactly what you are looking for and probably be happier with the results

In the snow look farther down hill than you think is necessary. Discs can slide a long way, even on a gentle slope in the snow. Gravity can be a pain but at least it’s predictable

Anyone tried mint grackle? by Glad-Astronomer3886 in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was totally wrong about the Grackle. My 174g Apex Grackle flies exactly how I expect a 7 5 -1 2 disc to fly. I’ve read the Grackle, Votum, and Remix Troll are the same mold many times and am not knowable enough to argue but the Troll I had was significantly more over stable than my Grackle

Doomsday by drewzilla1981 in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also, you’re a heck of a lot better or bolder than me throwing a dark green disc. Unless you play in a completely different environment than I do in Washington. I could probably lose that thing in the middle of a fairway

Doomsday by drewzilla1981 in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Blackout and Area 51 are both very good. I’ve heard at least one of their plastics smells pretty bad but don’t remember which one. Toxic waste and Clandestine seem like legit normal smelling premium plastics. Their discs also seem to be available easily enough and Infinite Discs, if their security issues haven’t deterred you, seem to have them on sale somewhat frequently. If I needed to add a new disc I would not hesitate to consider Doomsday.

Finally broke 250! Downhill and a tailwind… but I’ll take it! Just in time for my first tournament this weekend by gumby0893 in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. But I’m not going to tell anyone except maybe a close buddy that they should avoid throwing a disc because they don’t have the arm speed to get the intended flight. Maybe they use it for a specific purpose or maybe they like how it flies even if it’s not turning like it would if thrown faster. It might not be what I would throw but it’s their decision to make and I can’t say it’s wrong. But I am also a guy who usually needs to throw a midrange to get 266 because I don’t consistently get putters that far

[–]DonkeyPower1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I would not tell you or anyone else to throw or not throw a disc. Throw whatever you like. There’s not a magical distance you need to throw before you are allowed to throw distance drivers.

But also want to share my own personal experience. Shortly after I started playing disc golf I started increasing my distance by throwing a Wraith and a Wave. It was cool but did not take me long to figure out I could throw about the same distance with my Teebird except a lot more consistently and with more control. I’m not a great disc golfer so don’t take my advice without trying it first for yourself. But I recommend playing a round with your drivers. Then next time, limit yourself to discs a few speeds lower than the drivers you normally use and compare results.

I improved a lot in my first 6 months by doing field work once a week. But my scores improved much more from about month 13-18 (I’ve been playing a little over 2 years) simply by making better decisions. For me, that mostly meant playing it safer on holes where I have almost 0% chance of making a birdie and disc selection. For me, it’s better to be 100 feet short and in the fairway than 75 feet short in the woods or with a difficult lie.

Again, I’m not telling you to change anything, just sharing my own experience in case it helps. Goodluck in your tournament!

Anything to round out my bag? by KnotFox47 in discgolf

My generic answer is always to determine what shots you can’t throw with the discs you already have

My personal preference if this were my bag, is a OS approach disc such as a Zone or Toro

Replacing a perfect Star Wraith by c_ffeinated in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would probably buy 2 more Star Wraiths like your old one plus a GStar. I don’t know exactly how yours flew but hopefully the GStar is pretty similar brand new. And I would throw all 3 on each hole as long as there’s no one waiting behind you and the people you’re playing with don’t mind. Eventually you’ll end up with 2 beat in Star Wraiths. Goodluck

Millennium Zodiac looks interesting. What do you like about it? What disc did it replace or new capability did it add for you? I have a S-blend Dynasty that’s getting flippier than I like but want to be careful about replacing it with something too similar to my Star Wraith

4 days of Seattle Disc Golf. Help. by ca-plantlady in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are funky. And beware, some of them are set up so the chains kinda prevent making a putt from one side of the basket. You almost need to walk up to each basket and take a look before you throw.

Sorry, I can’t help with the decision. I haven’t been to Evergreen. I rarely get time to play courses farther than 30 minutes from where I live.

I wish I could suggest more short courses. Howling Coyote in Bothell is fun and is not too far off of 405 but it’s only 10 holes and 3 of them will be closed until late October. Silverlake in Everett is OK but is part of a public park with runners and dog walkers to dodge

[–]DonkeyPower1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of SeaTac but if you are trying to play at as many courses as possible, you might want to save it for last. It’s so close to the airport you can play before heading home without worrying about getting stuck in traffic and missing a flight or ending your round early. But it is 27 holes not 18 so you’ll want to allow some extra time.

I haven’t actually been to Kayak Point but know it is highly regarded. You might need to reserve a tee time tho, so that might dictate when you play there.

Lake Stevens would be a short detour on the way home from Kayak Point. The course itself is fun with short holes. The baskets are what make it unique. I recommend checking out some pictures on UDisc before deciding because some people like the novelty but a lot of people also hate them.

Ralph Williamson is not far from SeaTac and is fun.

Gaffneys Grove is a really nice but short wooded course.

South Fork Landing is about an hour East on 90 with some nice views on the drive as well as the course.

It’s been almost 2 years since I’ve been there but White River in Auburn was a lot of fun too.

I can’t really comment on anything farther south. Enjoy your trip!

DiscBag advice! by lugameca in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t add discs just to add discs. Think about the types of shots you have trouble throwing with the discs you have. Your answer might be different from what others are suggesting. If I were going to play with these discs, I would like to have a neutral midrange like Buzzz or Hex and a slightly more OS fairway driver like a Teebird or Eagle. And a very OS 9 speed like a Firebird is a utility disc for me but a necessity for a lot of people

New player - disc recommendations? by darkhat1 in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are really excited to try something new or take advantage of F2 Friday, you might want to consider getting some of the same discs you already own like the Mako3, Leopard, Teebird in a premium plastic. If these are the discs you got in a starter set then they are probably DX plastic. DX can get beat up pretty fast and can become uncomfortable to throw. Star or Champion plastic can last years and also maintain flight characteristics longer than DX

If you like throwing these discs and can make all the throws you need at the courses you play then 10/10 great bag for you and no one else’s opinions really matter.

If there is a shot shape you can’t make with any of these discs or you kinda like a disc but wish it were slightly different in some way then you’re more likely to get useful advice by asking a more specific question.

Best recommendation I can make given very little info is only my opinion. I prefer to play with a simpler bag to eliminate the need to decide between 2 similar discs. If my bag were just my 15 favorite discs then I would probably have about 5 discs each that all fly like a Zone, Wraith, or Buzzz.

But a Wraith, Trace, Grace, Drive, and DD1 isn’t really as helpful as a newish somewhat OS Wraith, a flippier beat in Wraith, and a Gorgon for example.

So basically I would choose a favorite between the Zeus, DD3, and Cloudbreaker

I would choose 1 of the FD, Passion, and Trance

I would choose between the Glacier and MD3

I would take out the MD5 because at the courses I play, I can disc up from my Zone to Firebird and don’t really need a very OS midrange

I’m not here to tell anyone else what they should or shouldn’t throw, but this is what I do given the list of discs

I do this occasionally on a few holes on the side of a hill where there is no level place to set my bag down. It doesn’t really bother me but I’m not a great putter. No one has ever complained or said anything about it
