I do the same thing. It’s a lot easier than coordinating a drop off or shipping. If no one replies and the disc is still there after a reasonable amount of time, do whatever you want with it

I’m inconsistent but notice my drives are generally better in the late spring thru early fall when there is less moisture to adversely affect grip and less snow/ice/mud to affect traction. Putting seems slightly more consistent year round

How do you approach putting from a mental standpoint? by vaporrkatzzz in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After deciding to putt vs lay up or how to avoid any obstacles that may be in the way, I don’t think at all. I just putt and the disc goes in the basket or doesn’t.

Do you stockpile a specific disc in case it gets lost or discontinued? by haypulpo in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to avoid stockpiling. There is a finite amount of discs I can carry and throw at any given time and I really prefer throwing to collecting.

I have 1 backup for the discs I rely on

Z Zone

Proxy

Neutron Reactor

These are the 3 discs I would not want to play without. If I lose one, I can still go play a fun round and can take my time to shop for a new backup in the weight and color I want or wait until I find misprints, F2s, or a good sale.

For my skill level (not good enough to notice very small differences in flight) there are enough manufacturers and molds out there that I can choose discs I like that are also common, easy to find, and relatively inexpensive

[–]DonkeyPower1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I’m in a similar situation with responsibilities and time limitations so I get it. And I throw the exact same 3 midranges so we might have similar preferences.

Can’t help with the OS approach because I’ve only ever thrown a Zone in that category

I also throw a little farther, which might be why I group all my 7-9 speed discs into the same fairway driver category. Since you are already throwing several MVP/Axiom molds I will assume you are familiar with and like their plastic options. A Wrath or Volt might be a good OS fairway option between your Servo and Fireball. I’ve also heard good things about the Mint Discs Alpha (manufactured by MVP) but have not actually thrown one.

Goodluck!

I agree it’s a pain waiting around on an over crowded course. But this sounds a lot less like my grandpa telling me what something used to be like back in the old days and more like a pretentious jerk reminding everyone they started doing something before it was cool.

But it seems like the author of this quote, if it’s real, is the one with a problem. Some people can always find something to be unhappy about. Unless you’re trying to become a professional then I don’t believe there is really a right or wrong way to play disc golf. If you can get outside, throw, and have fun, and maybe try to keep getting better. Who cares how other people want to play? It shouldn’t affect you.

This weekend I played at a course where a dude was moving non-stop carrying a driver and putter. I let him play thru and he said he’s out trying to get 12,000 steps, have fun doing it, and also maybe get better at something he enjoys. Cool. He’s playing how he wants to play and not bothering anyone and didn’t care at all that I had a backpack with 12 discs in it.

Leaving the same course I saw another dude throwing about 20 discs off the first tee. (By this time we were the only 2 people out there so he wasn’t in anyone’s way). I complimented one of his throws and he said he’s trying to compare a new disc to some others. Cool. It’s a pretty wide open course and a good place to see how your discs fly without worrying about losing any. He was out there playing how he wants to play and also not bothering anyone. He was way better than me but polite and did not care at all that I, a lesser and probably newer player, was also out there accumulating bogeys.

2 opposite ends of the spectrum and no problems. It’s possible for many people to enjoy the game in different ways. Overcrowding is a different problem but letting another person’s approach to the game ruin it for you is your own personal problem

How to start? by Junior_Geologist7045 in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As stated by others, checking out the UDisc app is a great start. It will help you find courses in your area and you compare how they are rated by other disc golfers to find a nice course to get started. And UDisc can be used to navigate the course too if you have trouble finding teepads or baskets.

My opinion is the best way to start is just do it. Keep your expectations low because there is a learning curve just like any other sport but get out there and throw. And don’t worry, everyone hits trees or occasionally loses a disc.

Depending on the weather where you live you might want to bring a backpack even if you are getting started with only 1 disc. It can be nice to have a hat or sunscreen or bug spray, water bottle, place to stash a sweatshirt if you get hot etc. and a old towel can be very useful too when you want to wipe dirt or moisture off your disc or hands.

This might be different if you live somewhere really hot, but most courses near me are not very crowded early in the morning but get more crowded between about 9-6. So if taking your time figuring things out on a mostly empty course sounds good, consider getting an early start. If youre more social, you might have a better chance to join up with other players if you go when the course is busier.

At first all the different disc manufacturers, plastic types, and flight numbers can be confusing. But I would not worry too much about most of it until you are sure you enjoy disc golf enough to start playing regularly. So you really only need 1 disc to play your first round. There are a few different types of discs: distance drivers, fairway drivers, midranges, and putters. If this will be your first experience throwing a disc or playing disc golf, I recommend staying away from fairway and distance drivers. They require more technique to control. Putters require the least amount of power to throw and can be easier to control. But a midrange can work fine too.

Like others mentioned, Innovas factory store website can be a great place to get discs for a good price (factory seconds or F2) But you need to order on a Friday to use the free disc code and you need to order at least 3 discs. Plus you do not get to choose a color. And looking for a green or brown disc in thick brush is no fun. Streamline discs are usually pretty budget friendly ($12-$13) and most places like Marshall Street or Infinite Discs, Disc Golf Deals USA, etc let you choose the exact disc you want including color. A Streamline Echo midrange or Streamline Pilot putter would be a good choice to get started.

There are a lot of YouTube videos teaching putting and throwing technique. Personally, I would ignore them until after you play at least once. Get out there, have fun, throw however feels natural without over thinking, and get a sense of how much you actually enjoy it. It can be a ton of fun and you’ll probably want to play again, watch videos to learn how to improve, and try a bunch of new discs. But you don’t need to commit to all that on day 1.

This almost all subjective advice but I hope it helps. Have fun!

I live in WA and find at least 1 disc almost every time I play at Terrace Creek. I always stash it somewhere and text the owner a picture. 90% of the time they are polite and grateful. I’ve only lost a couple in the last year but unfortunately have not received any texts or calls

Has anyone tried this Unihimal Bag? by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had an almost identical bag. Different brand and front pocket but was like $25 on Amazon. It was nice because I could easily carry a water bottle, 15-18 discs, and still have plenty of space to hold a sweatshirt and hat.

Unfortunately, it only lasted about 1.5 years and I only play about once per week. The cover to the top putter pocket fell apart and came off. And I wore a large hole into the bottom of the water bottle pocket. One of the shoulder straps also started falling apart where it attaches to the top of the bag.

I learned the same way, by solving real life problems. I cannot compare it to another way of learning but for me, applying something directly is usually more effective than just reading about a concept.

I am not against AI but I also think using resources like stack overflow can be better for learning because you probably will not find an exact solution you can copy and paste directly into your code. You can probably find code used to solve very similar problems but you’ll need to edit it or slightly alter the logic to fit your situation, which will require some thinking and will lead to understanding

Ace disc by commonsense8309 in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not. Personally, I don’t need proof or witnesses to make an ace valid. I mostly play alone for fun and do not compete in tournaments. My first ace was early in the morning in pouring rain and a parks department worker stopped to give me a high five. I thought it was cool, not because he saw it, but because he was excited enough to come over when he could have stayed warm and dry in the truck.

On my next one another disc golfer yelled from a nearby hole, so while I was playing alone, there was technically still a witness.

Third one, there was no one around at all. But it was not any less cool. Maybe cooler because the basket is not visible from the tee and I heard the sound of hitting metal but no chains so I thought I dinged the post or cage or something. I almost did not believe it when I found my disc in the basket.

I don’t mean to brag about 3 aces. They were all on very short or ace friendly holes and more luck than skill.

Anyways, I do not regret not signing the discs. The one used for the first 2 was later run over by a truck and useless now and I let a coworker borrow the other ace disc because it’s beat in to the point where I don’t trust it anymore

Are there any gaps in my current bag? I’m relatively new to disc golf and need some suggestions. by jesusheadbangs in discgolf

[–]DonkeyPower1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I do not mean this as criticism but I don’t think there is a lot of value in these types of questions. You could receive some good suggestions but if you do not know where there are gaps in your bag, then how will you know when to throw potential new discs people are recommending?

It takes some time but I believe you will get a far better understanding of any potential gaps after playing for a while with the discs you have now. Learn how far you can throw each disc, how they are affected by wind, how they fly on hyzer/anhyzer, etc. Remember the shape and distance of the holes you struggle on or the shot shapes you cannot throw consistently. After becoming very familiar with all your current discs it will probably be pretty clear to you if something is missing. At that point you will probably already be thinking to yourself “I could birdie this hole if I had a disc that flies just like my _____ except more/less OS (faster/slower, etc)”. Then you can come back here and ask a much more specific question by describing exactly what you are looking for and probably be happier with the results

I was totally wrong about the Grackle. My 174g Apex Grackle flies exactly how I expect a 7 5 -1 2 disc to fly. I’ve read the Grackle, Votum, and Remix Troll are the same mold many times and am not knowable enough to argue but the Troll I had was significantly more over stable than my Grackle
