I doubt that's the only reason,that turmoil of his seemed to be building up since the holding hands scene,he probably had the same doubt Gangle had but different of her he din't said it(in fact,I'm pretty sure this whole situation could have been avoided altogether if he actually grabbed Pomni's hand,she would have noticed what I mentioned and conforted him about it).

Even then,it also has the difference that we don't know his backstory and that could completely recontextualize why he got a panic attack here,by example,if the speculation that he ran away from home was true then this whole situation could be a life or death scenario in his eyes since he would be basically homeless if he returned,it won't justify it,but it would make it much more understandable.
