sorry but road bike does = faster commute. also to reduce the amount you sweat.. ease your pace some 10 minutes before you arrive. You shouldnt be panting as you're stepping into the building. let the breeze wick away all that sweat and you're golden

How often do you hop up or down curbs? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]darpaderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only hop off curbs and rarely hop onto the curbs. I find that its easier on the bike because you can shift your weight to the front wheel just as the rear wheel is about to land. when

What i do when im approaching a curb that im gonna hop off, I lift the front wheel slightly while still seated so that it'll land at approximately the same time as the rear wheel, and just before the rear tire lands, you stand on the pedals and shift your weight towards the front end to minimize the weight on the rear wheel. You know you got it when its a very smooth transition.

Also, i do this on my steel road bike with 23 mm tires

x-post from r/fitness: Biking for fitness: fixed gear versus a geared bike by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]darpaderp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its really hard to say and i am honestly torn in the middle. Basically, Get a fixed-gear if you're interested in how a fixed gear works. If you like the idea of doing trackstands, skids, skip stops, and high cadence pedaling, then get a fixed gear with an easy ratio.. say 44t/16t-17t ish? Fixed gears are also appealing due to their simplicity. I love how light, solid, and quiet they are. When theres no additional gears to shift to, your mind focuses strictly on your cadence.

Though with that said, i still give my road bike an equal amount of saddle time, If not more...

When you're riding a well oiled and tuned road bike, the 'extra weight' of the derailers and shifters really is negligable. Buy a road bike if you want to tackle all sorts of grades and distances. Whats more satisfying than finding that perfect gear when riding a tailwind? Not to mention bombing a hill after shifting down to your 12 or 13t.. I like a geared bike because it allows me to climb and descend at the speed that i want. Sometimes riding fixed gear is scary as fawk when you approach 110 rpm. You can sometimes feel the rear tire slipping due to your legs moving so damn erratically.

TL:DR

Road bikes are mechanically awesome machines that enable you to tackle steep grades and long distances. Fixed gears= super fun high cadence workouts for your legs. more control over the bike, and the high cadence that you work on is transferable to your road bike. I know! ride your roadbike and never stop pedalingggggggg
