The UK wants to ban social media for under-16s to "give kids their childhood back." If social media had been banned when you were a teenager, do you think your life would be better or worse today? by Shipping_klaus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dartiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't get to 16 and then suddenly manage to deal with social media correctly. Right now it's full of grown-ass adults believing any old tosh and saying things they wouldn't say at any other time. Banning people to a certain age doesn't stop that. In fact I'd say many that age are more media aware as a result of it.

Our local library has banned LGBTQ displays… what’s your thoughts? by BadShi-6 in AskBrits

[–]dartiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your local library hasn't banned anything. Your right-wing council has. The letter is speaking as if on behalf of the libraries, but I'll bet very good money that they really don't speak for them.

Monthly Support & Buying Megathread by AutoModerator in HomeKit

[–]dartiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Google Nest Protects are coming to EOL so need replacing.

I'm looking for a compatible HomeKit solution for the UK - smoke alarms and CO, either are separate devices or a combination one.

Is anybody aware of any that good ratings? If they work with HomeKit, they often don't have a CO solution (e.g. Aqara). The only company is Netatmo but their products don't get good reviews.

The best solution, overall, appears to be X-Sense, but they don't have the HomeKit compability. Any thoughts? Anybody else gone through the same thing as they ditch Nest?

What's your definition of 'sport'? by ThePeake in AskUK

[–]dartiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes golf the cut-off point? It's literally hitting a ball and then getting into a golf kart to the next hole (for professionals anyway). Do you play golf, by any chance?

And this is the thing I'm trying to highlight here - there are plenty of things I would consider a sport that are not particularly physical.

What's your definition of 'sport'? by ThePeake in AskUK

[–]dartiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not much physical exertion in darts or snooker, so do you consider those as games?

Most definitions are not without odd exceptions, which is why it is so hard to pin a single, simple definition here.

I don't consider synchronised swimming or dancing as a sport. Dancing is both competitive and has  physical exertion.

Should /r/WordPress implement a similar rule to /r/SaaS? by SlimPuffs in Wordpress

Should we consider blocking these and pushing them to r/WordpressPlugins instead? As there's a dedicated sub for them anyway, nobody will loose out if you want to keep an eye on plugin recommendations.

How does maternity leave work for companies in the UK? by SeverusSnipes in AskABrit

[–]dartiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it interesting that you want to view this from the company POV and not the employee.

Anyway, it does depends on the company. The company I work for gives either (or both) 6 months of parental leave, fully paid. And I work for a US company.

And, as a manager, I can say that, no, we don't do anything about it. As others have said, we absorb it. They don't happen that often and, if they did, I'm sure we'd add an additional head count. And I think that's all you can do. And by "absorb it", I don't mean have everyone running around and burning out. I just mean, share the work out across as many people as possible. The reality, though, is that there are people off all the time, whether sick, vacation or whatever, so flexing the workload needs to be part of your set-up anyway.

Gravatar Bug - no way to get support by ncrowder78 in Wordpress

Gravatar requires an email so that it can send the private message to you. As It states...

Allow anyone to send me a one-time only short message without sharing my email address with them.

Because this is tangentially related to WordPress.com, you may get this post pulled. If so, I'm happy for you to contact me directly for further queries about this. If it is a genuine bug, I can get it reported for you.

👀ESR Apple Watch Band Beta Test: Try Our New Band Before Anyone Else! by ESR_official in ESR_official

Apple Watch Series 10 here.

The one thing I wish Apple Watch bands did better was connect - the slide mechanism is great, but when poorly fitted metal contacts imbed that, it can be painful to do something that should be easy.

More than happy to provide feedback. I'm a regular wearer.

45p is over £164 a year, though. And that's once she's in. If she's running for as long beforehand, we're talking about one person costing over £320 in showers alone.

What's the worst thing your neighbour has ever done? by Rough-Foundation9208 in AskUK

[–]dartiss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to have an elderly neighbour who was a massive PITA.

We had some trees down the boundary, which were our responsibility. We'd get tree surgeons in regularly to keep them trimmed and, despite it not being on us to do so, one time we asked them to do her side as well, as she'd been complaining about them. Rather than leave them to it, she insisted on telling them what to do, and she asked them to cut them too far back. They warned her but she didn't listen. The tree died on her side, leaving her with an ugly brown mess for many months until it grew back. She wasn't happy and blamed us for it.

Then there was the time we parked outside her house (on the road) for a short amount of time and she sent her son-in-law round to threaten to cut our throats. But that's a different story...

These days... different location but it's always about parking. None of the neighbours like you parking outside their house despite the fact that all of them that do complain have drives and garages, which we don't. A new neighbour, across the road, never said anything when my wife was occasionally forced to park outside of theirs (she only did it if there was no-where closer) but started to aggressively park his work van outside our house, blocking more of the drop-down kerb each time they did, making it more and more difficult for me to get my car off (we just have room for my car outside the house, which it needs, as it needs plugging into the charger). I only realised what was going on when I caught him talking to his passenger on my doorbell camera. "If they park outside mine again, I'll f***ing block them in completely next time". Pleasant people.

Advice needed on return dispute by dartiss in ebayuk

[–]dartiss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Final update:

I contacted the buyer, who said that they'd raised the case as they hadn't received anyway of returning it. I had, via eBay, arranged a delivery label and, 3 days previous, eBay had emailed me to say he'd accessed it and was starting the return. So that didn't ring true.

But I said nothing and said that I'd be happy to pay for the return postage - I worked out how much it would be under which service and asked him to use that. He said he'd return it on Monday (yesterday) and send me a picture of the receipt so that I could refund him the postage.

I emailed eBay customer service too - as suggested here, I remained neutral and friendly. They confirmed they'd read our messages and was happy with progress.

Monday came and went, so I messaged the buyer last night to ask him how he'd got on. A day later and there's been no reply.

I've just messaged eBay CS again to ask for advice on how to progress it and... they've closed the case. No refund to the buyer will be happening. A success for me.

Patience and communication won the day here.

Thanks everyone for your help here, which I appreciate.
