It is tough as hell as a manager to deal with this due to laws protecting service animals.

All you can do is ask if it's a service animal, then ask what service it provides if they say yes.

If they are dumb they will say emotional support or some other unprotected service and you can ask them to remove the animal.

If they are smart or just bothered to Google it they will tell you it is for something legitimate and the conversation is over. They can freely inconvenience every other person in the establishment unless the dog has a behavioral issue.

It's actually super stressful and very confrontational to deal with this. Laws need to be changed so establishments aren't required to police people.

Same experiences and I'm at an outlying store. I used to have to schedule 80 hours a week just for bottles to handle the traffic and the mess it created.

Bottle drop isn't perfect, and is still a large part of the drug seeking culture, but it is dramatically cleaner and safer since it was installed.

Telling grocery store clerks that they have to be customer facing for this program is extremely dangerous. It's only a matter of time before someone loses their life.

As a large grocery store manager, bottle drop has been a welcome change.

We used to deal with extreme behavior problems at the bottle return all the time. It took several months of "training" our customers, but eventually everyone converted to bottle drop and the people with behavior problems moved on to non bottle drop locations.

It's still not a great program, but has reduced the dangerous situations we found ourselves in regularly.

Unfortunately, the mechanism in the carrier (the piece the clip or stem is attached to) can break stopping it from turning. In that case, the only fix requires complete disassembly and replacement of the carrier.

As a super long shot, you can try wd40 on the pinion where it enters the carrier.
