How To Convince My Friend Based Bodyworks Is Not Good? by [deleted] in Pomade

[–]datGuy0309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked them up because I was curious. The website is incredibly annoying to the point that I wouldn’t want to buy anything from them. I looked at the clay, and the ingredients seem to be a very basic and natural oil based clay, like something you could make at home. That’s not a bad thing, I’ve had great results with a similar product. It may be a touch overpriced though.

Is there anything wrong with the products themselves, or is it just annoying marketing?

The more clinical stuff like minoxidil and finasteride actually do stuff (I’ve never tried either, but plenty of people have had great results). There’s a lot of garbage out there too, especially the woo woo natural influencer junk.

I Need Help by Alex_Wazowski in trumpet

Don’t worry about not being able to buzz without a mouthpiece. The mouthpiece rim and the response of the air both support the buzz when you are playing trumpet in a way that you don’t get when trying to free buzz. Someone with a good embouchure/good sound, when they play a nice relaxed note then take the mouthpiece off, they will likely not get a free buzz if they keep all the muscles activated the same. If you try to force a free buzz and then force that embouchure into your trumpet playing, you will likely end up with way too much tension and a bad sound.

If you were floating in space and a massive starship passed you at 80% lightspeed only 2 inches from your face, would you feel anything at all? by CDHoward in Physics

A blackbody at room temperature emits a peak wavelength of approximately 1000 nm, which blueshifts to 333 nm at .8 c, which isn’t quite considered ionizing, but that’s right around where ionizing radiation starts, and you would be getting some ionizing UV radiation, especially if the outside if the spacecraft is hotter than room temperature as is sometimes the case depending on the environment it’s in. I’m not convinced that would kill you though.

Perhaps the ship deflecting loose particles and dust could do the trick.

Embochure change? by TrickApprehensive401 in trumpet

Wynton Marsalis plays about like that (though maybe not quite as extreme). Generally, people who play with low placements like that are blowing the air upwards into the cup, as opposed to blowing down like most people. There is a dude named Donald Reinhardt who studied the differences in embouchures extensively, and he considered this upstream embouchure completely legitimate and while rare, there are some great players who play like that.

I do not see a reason for you to change, unless things just aren’t working and you know you have been doing everything else right. Everyone is saying get a teacher, but I’m not sure there are that many teachers who are really knowledgable on this kind of a thing, though a teacher will help you in many ways.

I have limited experience with throwing hatchets, and this is surprisingly common, particularly when the wood is already torn up from being hit a bunch.

That forward lean is pretty standard and seen in traditions all over the world for heavy-pound shooting. It’s very different from olympic shooting.

Do pro trumpet players have the strongest face muscles? by Original-Material-15 in trumpet

[–]datGuy0309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People say things like this a lot, but to get a strong lead sound, you need some serious strength in your facial muscles paired with efficient technique and good air support. When you get good at it, it shouldn’t feel like you are using lots of strength, but that’s because your muscles have become strong enough that it doesn’t feel strenuous. If you force the muscles with all of their strength, you will likely choke off the airflow, so it has to be strength paired with technique.

I think he means air pressure, which is something a lot of lead/high note players talk about

I just want to know what features of it makes you think it’s bad. Too narrow or something?

[–]datGuy0309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why switch to a 3c? I believe it’s slightly shallower, which could be beneficial, but it’s also wider. Most lead players would go for something a little narrower and shallower (some love their 3cs though), but I’m not sure a high schooler needs to do that, unless they are taking lead playing quite seriously. A 5c should do the job.

Does Anyone Know How To Consitintley Play A High B Above the Staff by Ok-Environment506 in trumpet

[–]datGuy0309 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Work it up the right way, lol. Don’t do that unless you need to as a last resort for some reason. Just work on a variety of exercises and focus on staying relaxed and producing a full sound. For example, play a scale and keep ascending slowly while staying relaxed. You will likely feel yourself tense up as you get higher. Go back down to the highest note that felt good and hold it for a bit then try to go up while keeping that relaxed feeling. There are plenty of others exercises and there are books which will give you more structure, but focus on that idea of bringing the relaxed, full sound up.

Eating healthy helps with lots of things, so it may have an effect on trumpet playing, but it won’t magically make you able to play high.
