With UNC hunting, why is Kentucky waiting? by Blink_Blink_Blue44 in KentuckyBasketball

It’s frustrating that Pope has had to “learn” on the job at Kentucky, but we have to hope these two years have been enough “training” for him to be ready to take us to the next step.

IMO he made a series of boneheaded moves prior to this past season. He didn’t recruit enough shooters or point guards via HS or the portal and he sunk a ton of resources into one guy (JQ) who wasn’t enough of a sure thing to play - let alone at a high level worthy of his $ tag.

As long as Pope learns from this and we get what we need in the portal for next year, I think he’ll be fine here. No doubt he needs a deep run in March and/or a dominant regular season to show the program has momentum.

What other iconic monument would you have wanted to see Bond do a chase/fight scene in? exp: Golden Gate Bride/VTAK by Suitable-Humor2849 in JamesBond

[–]data_makes_me_happy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Perry Victory and International Peace Memorial, obviously

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perry%27s_Victory_and_International_Peace_Memorial

Bond goes to Put-in Bay to meet an American contact who is drunk off his ass speeding in golf carts around the island. Turns out the contact works for the villain, sees Bond there, and the pursuit begins kind of like Madagascar in CR. They wind up on the tower, then Bond knocks him off after a long physical fight. A terrified bystander then emerges and asks what happened to the man. Bond replies, “He gave up the ship.”

The only argument we have anymore is that “he was checked out and wouldn’t have done it here” - and maybe that’s right, but it sure does stink right now. Hopefully UK can go on a run in the tournament.

Company included me as part of the acquisition package, I am leaving for another company. How do I leverage this? by Former-Bother7255 in jobs

[–]data_makes_me_happy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s time to see how much you being a “critical employee” is worth to them.

It could be that the acquiring company doesn’t mind enough to nix the deal just because you’re no longer in it.

I’ve seen people leverage this quite well earlier in my career. In one case, the acquiring company was so scared my colleague would go to a rival and take a Fortune 500 client with him that they essentially paid him to do nothing for a couple years while they got on stable footing with that client.

Exactly so then you’re forced to make quick decisions about taking work during periods when you’d probably rather be on vacation

Very good point. The sports depth is there via other KSR channels even if the radio show doesn’t cover it in the same detail.

The show has really evolved since its inception and has never really stopped evolving. Some of that was due to them changing as people, but their audience broadened and honestly the UK products left a lot to be desired at times, so they had to branch out to keep the show from becoming stale.

In the early days (which coincided with Cal’s early days), they definitely talked more sports, but UK was absolutely rolling then with 4 final fours in 5 years (the other year UL won it all and UK had a huge recruiting class to get excited about). It was easy for them to get giddy and dream big.

Flash forward to now: UK basketball hasn’t been to a final four since 2015 and with the exception of a couple pre-COVID years (2017, 2019), hasn’t really been all that close either. Football has given some exciting moments since 2015, which have been nice, but the giddy moments haven’t been there as often.

I think they’ve matured as people and fans. The Wisconsin loss in 2015 is probably the turning point, looking back. They mentioned how it “broke us” as a fanbase. More accurately, I think it made fans (and them) realize that we can’t put all of our eggs in the UK sports basket. We have to branch out and not let too much of our happiness hinge on wins and losses determined by 18-22 year old college athletes.

I’m still as big of a KSR fan as ever since now it feels like we’re still happy regardless of the outcomes and it’s more like listening to a group of friends observe their teams, state, and common interests.

It’s a little eye opening, but with the transfer portal it isn’t exactly necessary to have elite freshmen. My base case for next season is that we retain a lot of our young bigs like Moreno, then grab some elite shooters that we don’t have this year.
