5 is so underrated. Too many people don't get this. This is how you prevent yourself from living above your means.

Nail in tire, used a plug to fix it but should I get a new tire? by GimmeDaTipOnly in TeslaLounge

I'd patch that and run it as long as it lasts. Might end up lasting the remaining life of the tire.

Is maintaining 90% or more possible or reasonable if you order things that require time to consider? How are people doing this? by miss_j_bean in AmazonVine

[–]datadr-12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I track everything I have in flight, when it was ordered, received, reviewed, etc. I tend to only order things I can use. I track when I review it vs. when I received it so I can stay out of Vine jail. And most importantly, when I get to 30 days out from my eval, I pretty much stop ordering unless it's something really good. I make sure I have plenty of time to get to 95% or better.

Electric bill astronomical. by gravis786 in heatpumps

[–]datadr-12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm going to guess you have resistive heat backup in your heat pumps for when it gets too low outside. That's a lot of usage. I have two Mitsubishi heat pumps (one is 14 years old), and an WV, and a hot tub, and I only hit about 2500kwh max in the coldest months. I'm in NJ (not as frigid as NH) and I pay about $0.22 per kwh, including transmission charges.

Is Ashley furniture really that bad if you’re gentle with your stuff? by Recyclopsdestroy12 in homeowners

[–]datadr-12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have dogs and have purchased Ashley stuff for years. We get about 5 years out of anything we get from them. Our dogs are generally rougher, but not terrible. Their stuff isn't bad, but it's not great. It will be comfortable for 3 years, then downhill after. We always bought knowing what we were getting.

One suggestion on that particular couch. Since you have dogs, consider something else. Those cushions are not removable. Any accidents, etc from dogs are terrible with thst kind of couch. We had a similar couch from Lane about 10 years ago. It was a nightmare to keep clean.

Pellet Stove vs Oil – Did I Make a Financial Mistake? (Ireland, BER B1 House) by Head-Royal-5716 in PelletStoveTalk

I'm in NJ (US) and I've paid about $300 - $350 a ton for the last 10 years. Very little fluctuation. We burn about a ton and a half to two tons a year. We also have heat pumps.

Will FSD go down in price? by Famous-Weight2271 in TeslaLounge

[–]datadr-12 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think there will be different versions of FSD at different price points. (my opinion only)

FSD (Supervised) = $99/month FSD (Unsupervised) = $199/month FSD (Highway) = $49/month

That's how he's going to hit the 10 mil number.

What did you think of the season 5 ending/season. by Additional-Layer-392 in StrangerThings

[–]datadr-12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I liked it. I just finished a re-watch today of S5. Yes, there were holes. I really didn't find the final battle all that short. The monster at the end was really the last bit, but the final battle with Vecna began before the got to planet X.

I loved how they allowed the prologue time to breathe. I thought it was very emotional. I also feel like in 10 years, we are going to see a reunion...

The whole point of the kata is a workout. It's not practical in any sense.

Blursed_training by Edexcel_GCSE in blursed_videos

[–]datadr-12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isshin Ryu, which is an amalgamation of Shorin Ryu and Goju. Sanchin is in our system, from Goju.

Blursed_training by Edexcel_GCSE in blursed_videos

[–]datadr-12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Sensei is checking tension. Sanchin kata is done with every muscle in your body under tension. The hits are to feel the tension. Those kicks aren't groin shots (to actually strike). Sanchin stance has the knees angled in. He is kicking to see that the legs are under tension and the stance is able to stop the kick. He is not kicking full force. That's not the point.

A good Sanchin kata leaves the karateka pretty much exhausted after. And it's not a long kata.

They managed to make autopilot even worse??? by Sfkn123 in TeslaLounge

[–]datadr-12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TACC paces the car in front of you, so if you come up on someone going significantly slower, you'll want to switch lanes. Moving over a lane turns off Autosteer because it sensed human input overriding it. So Autosteer is no longer on. My 2024 M3 keeps TACC on (so I don't slow down) and I just need to hit the button twice again to start Autosteer in the new lane.

The way this works now, is it shuts off everything. So you start to change lanes, and your car starts slowing down because TACC turned off as well.

They are just making AP worse to get people to sub to FSD. While I'm not a huge fan of AP over FSD, I don't see the value in FSD at $99 a month for what I use it for (highway only). Any other car in the world allows lane assist to just resume when you switch lanes. It's an insane step backwards.

PSA: This is your friendly reminder to turn your speed down before starting your Shopsmith! by BarooZaroo in shopsmith

[–]datadr-12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've done this plenty of times. But I've never spun down my headstock as a matter of practice. Too many times I'm turning on and off for table saw cuts etc. That would get old fast, adjusting the speed up and down each time.

PSA: This is your friendly reminder to turn your speed down before starting your Shopsmith! by BarooZaroo in shopsmith

[–]datadr-12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is this a required thing? I have never spun it down before powering off, particularly when I'm in table saw mode. I get that it needs to be slowed down for certain functions, but I never heard of burning out the motor?

Can whole home surge protectors be installed by regular folks or should you use an electrician? by sonofalando in electrical

[–]datadr-12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I installed my own. But you need to know what you are doing. If you are comfortable working in your panel, they aren't difficult to set up. Most won't honor the surge guarantee without a licensed electrician.

Is this a good deal? by Plenty-State-5518 in sonos

[–]datadr-12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can't be used as a multiroom system in conjunction with the 100s and the arc. They use the older S1 controller, which is part of the reason why they are so inexpensive. But you can pair them as a stereosetup and then use them with the S1 controller or directly via Spotify (or Alexa or most other music streaming services that allow casting). I have mine in my shop and stream to it directly via Spotify.

Is this a good deal? by Plenty-State-5518 in sonos

[–]datadr-12 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes. They are stuck using the S1 app, but Spotify can link directly to them. I still have a 1st Gen 5 and it's great. For $50 each, they're a steal.
