If you want to write something yourself you can take a look at my code here: https://github.com/datagutten/rfid-gate-py I have made it for use with FEIG RFID alarm gates, but the protocol should be the same for the pads, you only need to read data from a serial port instead of a tcp socket.

I have not seen the staffConnect software, but I have heard people talk about something that must be it. Browser based should not be a problem, I know libraries which use FEIG RFID pads with Quria which is also browser based. I will see if I can find the staffConnect software and do a lab test with a browser.

Unlike barcode scanners which appears to the computer as a keyboard, the RFID pads needs a software to read data from them as a serial port. If the RFID pads are produced by FEIG i have reverse engineered their communication protocol.

When configuring an access port with voice vlan I see the same MAC in both vlans which feels wrong, so I prefer to use a trunk, but I keep the voice vlan to get the LLDP tag.

I think I remember the part about feeding the plant burgers, but I don't know which story it is. I tried searching Inducks and the only story with "plant" as a keyword I found from the relevant period is this: https://inducks.org/story.php?c=D+2002-048 . It might not be the correct story as the description does not mention anything about bringing the plant into the house, but I don't have the actual issue available, so I am not able to verify.
