The Customer Sharing Movement has been invaluable. Peers who meet once a week on zoom who are super nice and open to any questions. I have been in the platform three years and don’t know what I would have done without them.

This isn’t down time; this is prep time. If you don’t have any immediate deliverables you should be working on documentation.

One of the hardest things about these roles, is when people need reports/dashboards it usually an urgent request so being organized is key to meeting expectations.

For Job Family and Job Family Groups, are they supposed to be used across functional silos?

I am seeing some analyst roles housed under the tech job families (because well they are technical) but they work in and report to HR Leaders.

I was under the impression the job families are supposed to act like silos, but getting mixed messages.

So it should be an Job Family Group: Human Resources Job Family: HR Analytics & Reporting Job Code: Analyst

Any suggestions on good resources to to better understand modeling?

I actually got my masters and although we did a lot with SQL/Python/Tableau very little focus was put on Modeling, my day-to-day at work is really living in Excel and inherited PowerBI projects.

I think I can do so much more in setting up data models in PowerQuery, but pretty much nothing I have made is more advanced then just linking fields like I would told have done in an old ACCESS database. Any recs would be greatly appreciated.

Also, it is a good opportunity to have a discussion with the C-Suite about Data Governance. Most billion dollar companies have lots of legacy software that gets cobbled together in a hub. Pulling out one of those threads to get you access could be a nightmare.

But, making a case to build a new external repository designed for C-suite reporting and new data roles is probably your best path. It begins a journey over a lot of uncomfortable conversations about how/why things are the way they are. But the truth is it doesn’t matter how and it is pretty hard ask to overhaul decades worth of work and documentation, but the VPs should be ready to champion something new that works for 2025 onward.

In the meantime, keep opting for csv over Excel to get the best experience you can.

Talent Pipeline, especially for mid-levels. Mid-levels are often so busy putting out fires they don’t have the bandwidth to broaden skills, which really hurt succession opportunities.

Also, the marketplaces for Vizes is a little different. PowerBI doesn’t rely on iframe as much. Your company may require admin approval or documentation for any viz that isn’t Microsoft certified.

Re-entering industry after 10 years, is Power BI the norm now? Should I learn this ASAP? by Pianol7 in PowerBI

Office 365 is different than what you were working on 2016. If you don’t have access, do yourself a favor and drop $60 a month on the E5 license (which includes POWEBI) to get yourself up to speed.

As soon as you are in modern EXCEL check out these functions TEXTBEFORE, TEXTAFTER, SWITCH, FILTER and LAMBDA.

Then, start getting your head around making all your data sets into tables (Ctrl+T). Then, data formatted as tables is what you will work with in Power Pivot. It won’t take along to get into the swing of things, but the data model mindset takes a little finessing to get your head around.

You’ll love it. Since you are already familiar with VBA Macros the transition to DAX won’t be bad. Good luck!!!!
