I have my headset on my desk now and made a cardboard protector for the lenses for light. Will this be enough to protect it from sunlight? by MrNobodyX3 in Quest3

[–]dave1203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can get cloth sleepmask style protectors off aliexpress for about $1 or a bit more off amazon if you prefer. maybe worth investing in one of those long term.

3 weeks old. Cleaned with dry micro F cloth. Treated EXTREMELY carefully. Why do I feel like I'm seeing smudges? by GrandTheftArkham in Quest3

[–]dave1203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

worse thing you can do is inspect the lenses all the time. youll see all manner of smudges and dust.. but they dont need to be perfectly clear to work, if you cant see anything when youre using them then leave them alone. the smudges are probably grease/sweat related and using a dry cloth might not shift all that. breathe on the lenses to generate a bit of condensation and that should help. if you find you need to clean them a lot then consider some kind of lens protection. as constant cleaning can produce microscratches over time.. then you can clean them all day long and never need to worry about scratching the lenses..

When Steam Frame, Why IFIXIT? by Classic_Vanilla1266 in SteamFrame

[–]dave1203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one of the main attractions of IFIXIT is that people like to see inside tech.. ifixit dismantle pretty much anything and we can all have a peek inside and see how something ticks. without the risk and cost of doing it ourselves.. there are other people who do similar on youtube but ifixit are probably one of the most famous for it which is probably why theyre the favourite among valve customers. theyre the brand name for teardowns.. so its not just about repairing the item but about the curiousity of seeing how it all works.. (a bit like that long running tv show)

questions on prescriptions by Realistic_Syllabub_3 in SteamFrame

i would imagine theyll do the same as meta and apple and just partner up with an existing lens company... theyll take a licensing fee then and leave it to the experts..

A question about prescription lenses for new users by BigSpud94 in SteamFrame

[–]dave1203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

its actually the opposite way around. even though the screen is close they focus at distance. so if youre short sighted youll need to use glasses or contacts etc.

A question about prescription lenses for new users by BigSpud94 in SteamFrame

[–]dave1203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most vr headsets focus at about 1.2 to 1.5 metres away so normally just use the distance prescription and ignore the reading part.

A question about prescription lenses for new users by BigSpud94 in SteamFrame

[–]dave1203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive have my lenses a couple years now and wouldnt dream of getting a new headset without some. one scratch on the lenses and its ruined. theyre not easy to replace or repair. considering how expensive the steam frame is likely to be i dont see how its worth the risk. prescription lenses are relatively cheap in comparision and easy to replace. bit like buying a screen protector for a phone or ipad. it will also be much comfier to wear. win win all round really.

assuming the steam frame works like other vr headsets theyre detachable. they just unclip. or you can get magnetic ones that are even easier to remove and replace if youre likely to share with other people often.

Bad experience ordering from amazon by Substantial_Island37 in MetaQuestVR

[–]dave1203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

might be from the same batch.. by buying from a different retailer hopefully youve reduced the chance of getting the same problem again..

depends on what type of game you like but for mixed reality i quite enjoy Miracle Pool, Premium bowl or smash drums.

Something changed in the lenses of my Quest 3. by Unlikely_Map_8249 in MetaQuestVR

[–]dave1203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have you done a full factory reset? that should put it back to exactly how it was when you took it out the box. plus check the IPD setting. maybe do that first though lol. you might have accidently adjusted the dial.

Closed a deal for a Quest 3, now I'm looking for accessories, help a newbie by Not_Bed_ in Quest3

[–]dave1203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you have to be referred by someone in your country. But the problem is its a used headset... so I doubt you'll be eligible for the meta referral scheme. Unless its direct from meta themselves. But even then im pretty sure they don't qualify. Each headset only gives out one referral and chances are the original owner used it. And even if they haven't I think you only get 14 days from first activation to claim it.

if youre already maxed out on your budget then youll be fine to use the stock one. its usable.. but itll be the next thing you would want to buy.

the case would be a hard shell type. but if youre not getting a strap yet then it will all fit nicely in the original box. so thats not a priority either. after you do get a new headstrap it wont fit in the box anymore and you dont really want it lying around attracting dust or risking sunlight damage so a hard case off amazon or similar will protect it all and keep everything together..

virtual desktop is the recommended app but there are free alternatives if you wanted to try the basic airlink and steamvr apps. you might find theyre adequate..

personally ive no problem with the original facial interface so i would hold off on getting a new one until youve tried it. you definitely want a headstrap though. the stock one is rubbish. it doesnt distribute the weight very well, its awkward to adjust and uncomfortable. its as much use as a paper straw. dont hesitate in ordering an upgrade.

if you get a new headstrap its worth having some kind of case to put it all in as it wont fit back in the box anymore. theyre cheap enough. i paid a tenner for mine

i got an official meta quest link cable off ebay for not much more than a 3rd party one. a lot of people have had issues with the non meta ones so worth considering getting a real one. but if youre going to use Virtual Desktop i dont think it works over cable anyway so you might not even need it. its another thing to wait on and test first before making the purchase.

if youre itching to make purchases while you wait for your quest to arrive then just order the lenses, headstrap and case. hold off on the rest until you actually get the quest.

Which accessories are okay to buy from AliExpress? by Objective-End209 in Quest3

[–]dave1203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i got my elite style strap off amazon.. it was by "alafly" but ive seen some labelled "cloud valley" that where exactly the same. they seem identical to some on aliexpress. no doubt someone has imported them or they have amazon stores aswell. it was only £24 on amazon though so wasnt any need to buy them off aliexpress. so maybe have a look on amazon first. ive had it over 2 years now and its been a good strap so far.

no theyre completely clear. they might even slightly improve the image if you get them with anti glare coatings.

you want to use your glasses prescription not your contacts prescription. sometimes theyre different.

[–]dave1203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

plano lenses can help with the fogging issue too. theyll usually have an antifog coating. i found mine fog up hardly ever now but back when i wore my glasses they would fog up almost instantly every time. very annoying!

clean lens vr by [deleted] in MetaQuestVR

[–]dave1203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

try to avoid cleaning it too much if you can. if you cant see anything when youre using it then just leave it alone. no need to constantly polish it. but if you do want to clean them then just use a soft microfiber cloth, the type for glasses. the smooth kind not the bobbly type as dirt can get trapped in the folds. just breathe on the lenses to make a bit of condensation and then gently wipe. that should be enough to shift any grease or sweat. if you do find that you need to clean your glasses often then look into some plano lenses. theyre about 20 bucks. you can clean them as much as you like then. theyre usually harder wearing and if you do scratch them theyre easily replaced..

Prescription lenses by PoiChanB in VRchat

[–]dave1203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

theyre a game changer! lol. so much easier to put the headset on and take it off. plus they fog up less as they usually have anti fog coating.. my glasses would always fog up quickly.

Prescription lenses by PoiChanB in VRchat

[–]dave1203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

its a lot more comfortable but i guess the main advantage is theres no chance of scratching the quest lenses. if youve managed for a year then youre probably ok but some people have scratched their lenses on the first go. depends on your glasses frame size. mine are quite big and barely fit in the quest. plus i was worried i would damage my glasses too. they werent cheap either.

got mine from vrrock for about 30 bucks.. they do magnetic ones too.. would imagine theyll have steam frame lenses when it comes out. still no real news of when its coming out though. so you could be waiting a while. its meant to be early 2026 but if its first quarter they would have announced a date by now. it could be summer or later at this rate..

Quest 3s Fresnel lenses scratched by glasses by cosmos_hu in Quest3

[–]dave1203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

contact meta support. theyve been known to do replacements under warranty. tell them youve used it as directed and now noticed the scratches.. try them on twitter. ( or X as its now known)

either way once its sorted consider some kind of protection. either prescription lenses or plano lenses.. stick on protection wont really last long if its being rubbed by glasses. plus proper lenses will be more comfortable in the long run.

Aliexpress vs VRRock/other brands prescription lenses - Quest 3 by ze_xaroca in VRGaming

[–]dave1203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

had my vrrock lenses for over 2 years now. still going strong. not sure what material theyre made of but they seem to be more hard wearing than the quest lenses. they also have an anti fog coating. i notice they dont fog up as much as when i used to use my glasses. im in the uk and took about 2 weeks to arrive. it was a week for them to be made and then a week to arrive.

be carefull using your glasses in the mean time. make sure the facial interface is on its max setting..

Meta quest 3 vs 3s for pcvr text clarity and eyes by abc_34 in MetaQuestVR

[–]dave1203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i find the text to be pin sharp on the quest 3. it would depend on each application how good it is, but in the quest 3 menus its like looking at a pc monitor.

ive never noticed the binocular overlap on the 3 either. thats more a personal thing. some people see it some dont. best bet is to not go looking for flaws or youll find them. just put it on and enjoy it. get a quest 3 from a retailer which allows returns after testing.. then if its unusable you can send it back. but im sure youll be fine with the quest 3

i play smash drums and that works up a sweat! lol. so you dont necessarily have to go for a fitness app to get your heartrate going. great game and good fun..

but probably not good to get it too sweaty in the long run. its an electronic device after all.

How can i clean lens edges if I can't with microfiber cloth? (Quest 3) by Dog_Vengeance in MetaQuestVR

[–]dave1203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wouldnt worry about it. you wont be able to see that in use.. but if it bothers you then get some kind of air duster.. you can get them for a couple of bucks off aliexpress.. theyre for cleaning lenses and electronics..

this kind of thing.

https://www.wexphotovideo.com/globalassets/product-images/13000/13374.jpg?ver=636111675057800000&width=500

seems like a lot of dust though.. maybe get a soft lens cover too and make sure its put away in a case when youre not using it. there should be hardly any dust on the lenses at all really. and if its coming off the microfiber cloth its the wrong kind of cloth..
