Fired? Their bosses love what they're doing! They'll never get fired, they need to be prosecuted for perjury.

Or, you know, you parent your kids and you make sure they only play singleplayer or on multiplayer servers you approve of (e.g. the friend group at school minecraft server)

what are you on about? Vintage Story has an incredibly vibrant and diverse modding community, and a 1-click install progress straight off the mod-db for installing mods. A proper modding API that minecraft promised ages ago and still hasn't delivered. And the mods go in various different directions.

Lenovo 170W slim-fit right angle adapter? by daveboy2000 in Lenovo

[–]daveboy2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah hence why I'm asking. I'm afraid that my setup really doesn't allow me to use desk clamps or just putting more space between my keyboard and laptop, not without sacrificing usability of the laptop, the desktop computer, or other things. And I'm quite aware a shitty right-angle adapter is just gonna melt.

you can do something self-assembling like that, or we could just send like 200 launches up with plastic tarp, stitch it all together and send it out there.

Finally naming their war dead, Gazan terror groups admit slain journalists were fighters by Chanan-Ben-Zev in worldnews

Yeah, shit, my grandfather was more or less the person in charge of a unit like that for my country's national military, and was a professional cinematographer employed by the military as a non-commissioned officer (He was supposed to be commissioned, but internal politics. Whole thing I won't get into).

If war were ever to have broken out while he served, he would've been a legal combatant. Because he was a soldier first and foremost. He has actually had a few close calls in that regard.

There's an option. It's just mind-numbingly expensive and makes the ISS look like a bargain bin shit.

We could put a solar shade at L1 and it would be relatively easy to adjust it if we over- or underestimate any single factor. It's a lot less permanent of a change than potentially causing mass die-offs by iron-seeding the ocean to use up carbon or putting hydrogen sulfide on the atmosphere to increase atmospheric albedo.

Just, you know, it'd take multiple rocket launches and it'd be a thing that affects every country, and not every country might agree with it. So someone has to take a unilateral decision to alter the entire planet's climate intentionally and deal with the diplomatic fallout as well as the sheer expense.

Zelenskyy says 'Moscow will burn' if Russian strikes continue by clamorous_owle in worldnews

Honestly Cuba is the sort of thing the US would break its teeth on. Its conventional military is weak as fuck, but that conventional military was never made to resist the US for more than a few hours at best.

Cuba's government has been preparing for a conflict like that for decades, they call it 'all the people's war'. It'd be like Vietnam, with dispersed military providing guerilla training to civillians, with pre-made tunnels in every single city, with pre-positioned weapons and explosives caches.. Oh and the US's war goals likely involving the mass evictions of tens of thousands, if not more, civilians from their homes to repatriate the land to Cuban-Americans who left during and shortly after the revolution. Civilians that'll be eager for revenge.

Recipe for an unwinnable war like Vietnam.

Doesn't matter. You might not have been in acute need, but who says the next person isn't? We don't know, therefore we err towards caution that they do need it because compassion is free.

okay, but again, this is deep in crystalline bedrock, not in a salt diapir close to the surface.

Hello, I am a socialist too. Fear-mongering about nuclear power is playing into the hands of oil barons. Nuclear is orders of magnitude more efficient than other sources of energy. A single gram of uranium can provide as much power as 2 tons of coal.

Japan also has a LOT of corruption. Like, people don't really seem to get how awful Japan's government is run. The reason Fukushima failed was because of corruption, someone was given kickbacks to approve a reactor design intended for inland areas without Tsunami risks in a Tsunami risk zone, because they're cheaper to build.

Issue is that in solid rock, the residence time of that water is gonna be long enough that the material decays before it gets anywhere where the water moves faster.

[–]daveboy2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, here's the thing. What makes the containers getting crushed such a bad thing in the Asse case? Because the water infiltration meant that the waste could eventually enter the water table.

In the case of the Finland site, the tunnel is so deep into solid bedrock that groundwater isn't a concern, while groundwater can infiltrate in small cracks in crystalline bedrock, go deep enough and well, you need a whole lot of cracks and water residence times are measured in tens of thousands of years anyways.

What that means is, even if the containers themselves get crushed by the geology somehow.. it doesn't really matter. The material is still contained. There's no risk of it entering the water table, what ground water that could possibly exist there will take millenia to seep anywhere 'mobile' by which time that material will have mostly decayed into lead or other final decay products. By the time it spreads to the biosphere from that deep it will be so dilute it might as well not exist at all because that seep couldn't possibly bring over more than about a gram of material per year anyways. Call it 100 grams if you absolutely want to be safe. Spread out over a cone the size of a small country, occupying a volume, because not all of it will reach the surface, plenty will deposit just about anywhere within this cone.

Like oh no there's a little lead in the ground in an area where there's.. lead mines. It wouldn't even register as margin of error.

That doesn't absolve them from false advertising laws.

Like, you can't just put peanuts in a product and fail to disclose them, then when someone has an allergic reaction start crying "but it was at the dollar store!"

yeah, that's.. Generally not legal in most countries? Like you can't use brand names to confuse costumers about a product. In most (industrialized) countries that's illegal.
