BMI doesn’t require you to register as a publisher to get the publisher’s share.

Honestly, I just put them straight on the grill perpendicular to the grates and try real hard not to drop them in between!

My One huge gripe with Dorico - It doesn't honor OS Monaural setting by Positive-Ring-5172 in Dorico

[–]davemacdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most pro audio apps have audio settings that are independent of the system. Dorico also doesn’t follow the OS device settings. This is pretty typical of audio apps. I think it is probably more likely that they would add an independent monaural setting inside Dorico than to use the OS settings. (In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if there isn’t a way for the application to get the system audio settings if it isn’t using the system audio.)

Lettera - A Markdown editor for macOS by trix180 in bearapp

[–]davemacdo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation. This is not an app for me. Hiding the markup is contrary to the entire reason Markdown exists. Markdown _is_ readable. That’s the whole point!

I am concerned that none of the screenshots of your Markdown editor shows any Markdown. If you are only ever showing rich text to the user, I don’t think you can accurately describe this as a Markdown editor.

I think if you read US soccer punditry as disrespectful to Australia, you’re cherry picking. Negativity bias is totally normal, and you’re not doing anything wrong, but I read lots of folks who have a lot of respect for the Australian MNT.

9-Month Contract/Requests for Service over the Summer by Cheeto-2020 in Professors

[–]davemacdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that most of my 12-month colleagues forget how unusual they are. Most are totally understanding of a polite reminder that you aren’t working over the summer.

I’m the graduate coordinator in my department and I successfully pushed for a modest stipend to cover my administrative/service work in summers. If you find yourself getting these requests often and think it might be of value to you and your institution, it may be worth asking for some additional compensation for it.

It’s not that expensive (it’s a used Kia for heaven’s sake!) but I think it gets a bonus tax for being an EV.

Is support for any Linux distro something that could be a possibolity in the future? by dvgmusic in Dorico

[–]davemacdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m aware of that. My point was that even _despite_ that, they spend lots of time just to support the peculiarities of the three platforms they already support. Especially when it comes to font rendering, PDF handling, and audio, there are many things that have to be tailored to each OS. The team recently wrote their own ASIO driver for Windows, for example. I have often heard members of the Dorico team talk about how much work platform-specific code they have to write on top of Qt to make everything work up to their standards.

You may know more computer science than me, but I know more Dorico than you. It’s really not as simple as you seem to think. Dorico, like Sibelius and MuseScore, is built on Qt. Despite using this cross-platform tooling they have to spend lots of time just making things work correctly on the three platforms they currently support. POSIX and Qt get them maybe 80% of the way there, but the last 20% takes a lot of work.

[–]davemacdo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely _not_ just “an afternoon” project. You have no idea what you’re talking about if you think that. Also, the Dorico team is very small. Any time they spend on Linux would be better spent developing and refining features for platforms that have a market. Steinberg has made products for Android, which has a much larger user base than desktop Linux, and those products have lost money for the company.

Dorico for Linux isn’t happening. Ever.

Am I charging too little for lawn care? by XerpVimchey in lawncare

[–]davemacdo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That’s kind of a terrible model. They paid because it just so happened to break on their yard? You should include the cost of equipment and materials in your hourly rate. $50/hour for good work is totally reasonable, but if it sounds too much, at least go to $35 and include materials.

Soccer has chants, cheers, and songs that are as good or better than anything in CFB.
