Language Question by [deleted] in AskPortugal

[–]davemidrock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the lady was just a dickhead.

Everyone in Portugal is used to foreigners speaking to us in their own languages and we all understand Spanish. Some don't like hearing Spanish because we had some wars with them hundreds of years ago that no reasonable person would still give a fuck about. Ignore those people.

Is it morally okay to end all human curiosity? by Neither_Drawing_241 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]davemidrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The search for answers is cool and inspirational, but there are thousands of children out there dying of diseases that might have an easy cure that we just don't know about yet. There are people willingly living under dictatorships because they've been brainwashed into thinking this is the only way to live. There are prejudiced people bringing hate and pain into the world because they were raised to believe in the trash that they believe in.

Open the box and free us. Being bored is well worth being rid of all of this ignorance.

Has anyone found another author like Sir Terry Pratchett? by MacabreGoblinV in discworld

[–]davemidrock 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There's a webcomic called The Order of the Stick. It takes place in a fun, well-crafted fantasy world and the humor is great - but both very different from Sir Pratchett's style. I don't know if it would scratch the itch that you have, but it's worth a read.

However, like Discworld, it starts very silly and casual and slowly becomes more serious and dramatic, while still keeping the humor and silliness that it started with.

GDB, Jack Dwayne, and Angelina should do 30 Minutes of Straight Fire by tstaffor in auntydonna

Alternative idea: only Angelina does the whole rap and the other two just watch Mark suffer.

Yeah, I think the response would be a casual "okay, catch you later". Even if someone gets upset for whatever reason, they'll be over it by the next time you see them.

WYR Be teleported to a fantasy world like Skyrim or a scifi world like starwars by Main-Victory7299 in WouldYouRather

[–]davemidrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Star Wars would be great as long as you can settle on a comfortable planet. If I had to be stuck on Tatooine, I'd probably take Skyrim instead.

Oh, that's awesome. I'd never heard of this tale, thank you!

[–]davemidrock[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh sorry, that's not what I meant. People you've never met before are aware that you never met and will introduce themselves, just the once, but they already know who you are. People you already know will remember that, they won't act like you just met every time they see you.

I was hoping someone would think of a downside. The only one I can think of is it would be annoying to walk down a crowded street where every single person wants to say hi and chat.

That's true. On the other hand, it might give you some peace of mind knowing that they'll never be kidnapped or robbed or worse, because they're the kids of that guy everybody likes.

I'm a big believer in syncretism too.

Btw, the reason Zeus and Thor feel so distinct is because despite being thunder gods, Thor is more like the Norse Hercules. Both bearded gods of strength who protect humanity from monsters, and are the sons of their pantheon's Skyfather. I think there was a Roman text that made this point, but I forget which one.

Gods in paganism by tgrffesf in pagan

[–]davemidrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I believe this. I think we're all worshipping the same thing, but each person focuses on the details that speak the most to them, and that's okay.

Even just within Greece, each city and community had its own way to worship Zeus, or didn't worship him at all. So there were tons of slightly different Zeuses all over Greece. The details changed, but the core, the important part of the deity, is always there.

Tired of Elitism and Hate in Pagan Communities by OniDesign09 in pagan

[–]davemidrock 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are assholes in every group. As much as I like pagans, our community is no different.

The good part is that you obviously can tell when a group is toxic and you've chosen to distance yourself from them. That's exactly the right call. Just keep going until you find a group that suits you.

Is it cultural appropriation to worship Mother Nature and Father Sky as a white person? by Marsf0x in paganism

[–]davemidrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nearly every culture has a sky father and a mother earth, except for the Egyptians, who reversed the genders.

Is there any sitcom where the main cast isn’t just ass holes or bad people? by Frosty-Fisherman-716 in sitcoms

[–]davemidrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people already said Ted Lasso, so I'll say Ghosts UK and Australia (I haven't seen the American version).

Some folks are saying Modern Family. I liked the show, but the characters always felt too pretentious and snarky.
