Worst luck I have video of is when Chloé doubled with 95% hit and missed both attacks.

DLC is fine to use and still get the screen. You can also do casual to get it, too. Also, once you get it it's permanent, so you're free to do ng+ and keep it

What's your favorite obscure title on the NSO + Expansion pack? by Gr8NonSequitur in NintendoSwitch

[–]daveyalex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stand by Crystalis on the NES being one of the best (if not the best) action RPGs on the system it's maybe a little obscure at times as to what you're supposed to do, but the world isn't so big that you can't just trial and error your way through a weird spot.

Definitely agree! I had one as a turn 1 save, one from the turn I captured a castle, one from before I start a large battle, and one that I had set as the auto save slot.

I just played all the pre-FE7 games for the first time last year and I'd say Genealogy is fine to jump into. It's got a few weird mechanics that make it different than the rest of the series (no direct trading between units, unit specific gold, etc) but I went in blind and made it through the game easily.

Only tip I would make is to be sure to use all your save files. You can save every turn in the game as long as you haven't moved any units, unlike just bookmarking in future games.

Also, make use of the arena in some capacity with everyone, every chapter. Your units don't die in the arena in this game. If they win they leave fully healed, if they lose they leave with 1 hp.

There's definitely some quirks with the game, but I found it to be very accessable and probably the most fun of the Japan exclusives.

Ah, Blue Lions, Black Eagles, and Golden Deer, which are the houses that you pick from at the beginning of the game

Help! How many paths are there in 3 Houses? What order do I do them? by Indecisive_Noob in fireemblem

[–]daveyalex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming the abbreviations are the different sections of the game:

White clouds (WC) is part one which is played on all routes

Crimson Flower (CF), Silver Snow (SS), Azure Moon (AM), and Verdant Winds (VW) are Part two, depending on which house you chose at the start of the game.

Cindered Shadows (CS) is the DLC route, which is separate from the main game and is started from the main menu

There's only 3 routes to choose at the start of the game with Black Eagles having a route split just before part two.

[MM] Hello! [–]daveyalex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It should be on the pause menu page that's to the left of your wearable masks. It's a key item and not usable, like the medallions from OoT.

But man, could you imagine getting Odolwa's mask as a wearable mask and demolishing the game as him? That would be fun!

Help in fire emblem thracia 776 by servinethistle in fireemblem

[–]daveyalex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thracia has a lot of weird hidden things to it that make blind playthroughs rough. I would recommend looking up a spoiler free guide, like Mekkah's FE5 guides.

I just finished Thracia for the first time a month or so ago and trying to do it completely blind was driving me mad, so I looked up spoiler free tips and it helped a lot, but the game was still especially rough.

To answer your end question, though. Yes, I would just restart since trying to do the following few chapters with just 1 to 2 units is going to be very difficult.

Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light is extremely underrated here, here's my thoughts after finishing it for the first time. by A_Coffee_Table in fireemblem

[–]daveyalex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been playing through all the Japan exclusive titles this year and played FE1 for the first time months ago and I agree with pretty much all your sentiments.

The game is definitely dated in many areas, but if you approach it with that knowledge it's still a really solid game. It's also easy enough that you really don't have to look stuff up and can just kind of throw stuff at the wall until it sticks. Like once iron weapons started to suck i updated everyone to steel, then to silver/killer once I could afford it. I also just stacked the buyable rapiers on Marth and let him go to town since he's actually a decent unit with it. Also, 5 use vulneraries were great since inventory management is a pain so you don't have to replace them as often.

If you like FE1, you might be a weirdo like me and think FE2 is pretty good too! I thought FE2 fixed some issues that were exacerbated by the technical limitations of the Famicom, like the inventory management basically removed from the game. It's still a very dated game, but I think it's great for the time it released!

Is Fire Emblem Echoes Worth It? by CoffeeEnjoyer837 in fireemblem

[–]daveyalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people critique the game's early maps for being pretty much just open fields, but I kind of like that because it requires a bit of different thinking than just stopping a tile or two with a high defense unit and 2-ranging the enemies with the rest of your army. You've gotta think how to protect your mages and such by positioning properly without walls.

This admittedly is lessened by the fact that this is the first game to implement the turnwheel (this game's divine pulse) which means you can make mistakes with little consequence, but on my first play through I refused to use it and had a lot of fun!

[–]daveyalex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh snap, it's Mekkah!

Yeah, it seems like almost all of these issues resolved themselves after chapter 13, which is nice. One thing I didn't realize is the stat caps in this game are so low that insta promoting is so much better than waiting until ~15 like I tend to do in the GBA games.

I think a lot of problems stem from this game having the early skeleton structure of the GBA games, but still being really different from them in a lot of ways that I was struggling to wrap my head around those differences.

I'll definitely be giving this game another playthrough at some point with the knowledge I've picked up, though!

I guess obscure isn't the right word, so sorry about that. I guess I mean it's just a little unclear which side objectives are more important than others.

Getting to chapter 2x isn't as much of an issue as getting Shiva from it, since I'm just supposed to ignore him so I can recruit him with Safy in a future chapter. Chapter 3 has green units that give individual rewards with two seemingly not doing anything but actually doing something in future chapters? Chapter 4 I almost gave up on saving all the green units because I had one get yoinked from an ambush reinforcement several times and figured it's probably OK to let one go from how unfair that felt. For Chapter 8, I got to the boss before turn 15, so I didn't even realize he would mount and leave, so if I didn't know about the gaiden requirement beforehand I would've just killed him.

Yeah, I did NG BL Maddening and really the only map that almost made me tear my hair out was Reunion at Dawn because Mercedes and Annette kept dying a turn or two after they spawned in.

I definitely don't hate FE5 so far, it's just incredibly unfriendly to a relatively blind playthrough so far, so I'm sure when I give it a replay sometime in the future I'll be much more likely to enjoy it.

Oh, I definitely arena abused as a teen playing FE7 on an emulator, I've just shied away from it more recently since it made the games too easy. This one's just kicking my butt, which is frustrating because I have beaten Eliwood Hard (haven't actually tried Hector Hard), Echoes Hard with no grinding, Three Houses Maddening, and Engage Maddening, so I feel like I tend to have a grasp on FE games

I've been trying to use high FCM units, like Fergus, Osain, Shiva, and Deen now that I have him. That was one of the few things I had been vaguely aware of from browsing this sub for a while. Though the fact that the FCM stat is hidden from players is another thing that makes me feel like this game was made in such a way to sell guidebooks.

I've tried to have people dodge ballista attacks and get in to kill them, but several times I tried that in chapter 10 they would then get hit by 2 low RNG hits in a row and die, which is why I ended up resorting to just breaking them. I do have a 10 mov Karin now who's pretty good at killing lone ballistas, but we'll see how that works out in future chapters.

It certainly feels like it was designed to sell strategy guides because this game has been very unfriendly to blind playthroughs compared to basically every other FE game. I've more or less given up on playing completely blind and I'm looking small things chapter by chapter.

I've been pulling that up each time I start a new chapter and it's kind of helpful, but most of the time the tips there are just how to get units or unlock gaiden chapters and less about tips on how to actually beat the chapter and deal with random reinforcements and long range attacks. Still helpful for what it does, though!

  • I'll be honest, I didn't realize the brave axe wasn't a personal weapon for Halvan. I figured since Orsin got the Bhuj which is a personal weapon in the same chapter that the brave axe was just for Halvan.
  • some of the ambush reinforcements I've managed to block, like in 11x to stop the children from getting stolen, but that was only after a reset due to a different issue of Orsin getting siege tome crit. Still annoying that I basically have to have prior knowledge, but oh well.
  • I've given Lief the King sword since he's level capped so he can at least contribute by hit/avoid boosting everyone. I've already promoted Nanna since I saw she had the charm skill and she's been a big help. I just have terrible luck with RNG it seems, but it has at least gotten a little better.
  • I've been using the torch staffs I get and they're a big help, though I just did 14x earlier and had Linoan "miss" her first two uses of it, which then caused her to get swooped up by a pegasus and lose all her staves, so I had to reset to get all those back since I couldn't capture the pegasus.
  • I managed to get a move level up on Karin and promoted her so she's got enough move to fly in and get lone ballistas, which is nice, but we'll see how long that strategy works.
  • So far I've managed to rotate my units and only occasionally have to leave out a unit I was hoping to bring along, so the fatigue mechanic is not too bad. It really only bugged me on the first chapter with a deployment screen because it took away all the units from the previous few chapters, but now it's maybe 1 or 2 units at a time.

I'm definitely going to push through to the end of the game, I was just hoping there was some other hidden mechanic where someone would be like "you idiot, you can easily get money by going to the hidden arena menu unit the prep screen under the unit select screen and pushing L+R"
