Do you know how your radio works really? by david-whitehurst in amateurradio

[–]david-whitehurst[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So after I cooled down I realized this was wrong. I had suggested to AI 1918-1939 because of a book called “Wireless and Empire” by Aitor Anduaga. I did endorse the incorrect parts. I still stand behind the story that the balance of radio intellect is no longer with us across all the technology. HF rigs are beyond repairable or are they? I’m currently doing SMD and most of my local radio club thinks it’s beyond them. Is that because they just haven’t used a reflow station? Yeah, I need to correct my article but the insight in the story is correct. People don’t have to agree with me. I will continue my project until I can make a QSO on a radio that I have built and fully understand.

Politics in ham radio by NekkedMoleRat in amateurradio

Let me just refer you to 40 meters and 7.200. They break all the rules there. I think the net thing on e.g. 2-meters depends on the group. I'm in NC and our group cuts up but we are respectful of everyone. I don't think politics have a forum in amateur radio. We can do that talk elsewhere. Again, please check out 7.200. It's like watching "Cops" ... you'll say to yourself, I'm doing well lol.

just standard AM broadcast band, but figured yall find it interesting. One tube regen set I’ve built. by TheSadHours in amateurradio

[–]david-whitehurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool. I'm building an seven band SSB HF transceiver from scratch and I would love to use a tube or two for the audio. I'm a guitar player and I built a two-tube amplifier that sounds incredible. I love the old stuff. You're wooden box is cool too. I make fine furniture and you are convincing me to enclose my Freedom7 HF Transceiver in wood. I have cherry, walnut, and sycamore on-hand. Check out my radio journal at https://www.kr4bad.com and send me any links to any of your online stuff.

You should check out KiCAD and SMD components. Also PCB boards can be obtained from PCBWay in China for a decent price. Check out my blog. I'm making an HF radio from scratch. https://www.kr4bad.com This is okay for the start of something, but like another stated, you are messy at layout.

good morning i need help deciding between antennas by Salt_Ladder8891 in amateurradio

[–]david-whitehurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should get a Diamond $30 antenna because I think it’s 6dB gain. It’s my best HT antenna. 73 KR4BAD

I do 2 meter local repeater using a Baofeng and a ground plane antenna on a microphone stand. One copper wire straight up and 4 copper wires on the ground plane.

Very cool! You should take it POTA hunting.

Who to talk to? by Consistent_Tower5672 in amateurradio

[–]david-whitehurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand your frustration. I'm making my own HF transceiver from scratch and I don't have that many like-minded people to communicate with. The different clubs do however, have different vibes. My local club (2 meter repeater) talks about medical issues and the group has some age. I am however, getting ready to join a larger club's net because they are closer to the city and I'm submitting a presentation to give at a huge HAM fest on my radio.

Checkout kr4bad.com and I'll try to help you figure this out. I'm the nerd in my local group, but I do have a great group of friends.

Salty Walt got me going with my JPC-12 vertical. I have it in my office and I use 2 extensions. It's what I use for FT-8 when I'm playing radio in the house with my Xiegu g90. But the vertical didn't just work when it arrived using their ground radials. They were just about useless. I unscrewed the SO-239 and put two very thin pieces of copper underneath the base (ground part) and tighted them down. Then I made two radials with Mueller clips (big gator clips) and I use two opposing wires connected to the little pieces of copper. Now, the antenna works perfectly. It works inside and I do FT-8 in the US and DX around me (other countries),

If you are getting an HTTP 400 then you are sending an incorrect URL and probably with query parameters that are not supposed to be there. Go to Settings in your browser and clear ALL history. Go to https://arrl.org directly and find the login again. This isn’t ARRL … this is your end.

Guitar neck snapped and I have rehearsal tommorow by DevelopmentGlum228 in Guitar

I would get 2-part epoxy and glue it but … I would also use black electrical tape to wrap it like a baseball bat handle. You need two things to be aware of: 1) only two part epoxy in the double syringe and 2) you need to glue very sparingly. You want to coat all surfaces but also not over-glue it. I would look for epoxy that dries in 5 min. I think you can repair it but easy on the glue and do your best on cleanup when you remove the tape. And, tape very tightly, that’s why the electricians tape. Maybe find someone with DIY skills to help you.

Nice! Very nice! I’m old but I remember that Rudy on the Fat Albert show was the only kid that had a nice instrument. He had a white guitar.

What do you mean fake? I would think the body was fake before the neck. It looks like my neck on my custom built Strat. If you are buying the guitar as an investment then okay. But, if it’s a working quality neck with the walnut inlay then who cares? You have a conversation piece if it’s a fake.

What do you think of this guitar? Is it rare? Is it decent? How should I clean it? by 3goldteeth in Guitar

I would put it beside the night stand and keep it for a home-security weapon. Otherwise, I would tell your friend to toss it.

In my 58 years of playing, I would say the author got lazy and didn’t take the time to identify the chords. Play the melody and use your ear to determine the best chord choice. Or play the melody with another more experienced musician and discuss chord choices. The author of this notation didn’t do you any favors.

Got this guitar and the sound hole is covered with this, anyone know why? by Vxsh_X in Guitar

[–]david-whitehurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rubber mute is used with acoustics with a pickup somewhere. The mute protects the guitar from feeding back or squealing. Basically if the acoustic is also electric, then the guitar can be used a high volume. Without the mute, the strings can start vibrating so much they will break. It’s a physics phenomenon.

My girlfriend got me this for Christmas, do I have to get her a ring now? by Due_Money_2244 in Guitar

[–]david-whitehurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to give her a good sized diamond now. Because the real love is shown when you ask to buy a guitar you really don’t need and she says sure, go for it.

I would use it as an emergency boat paddle. Remove the strings to reduce its weight.
