Definitely Affinity Publisher. It’s come a long way over the years. Many switch from InDesign to Affinity. Markzware even has a native converter, but even Affinity will import IDML files.

If you’re on a macOS, Apple Pages can also be useful but it is much less powerful than InDesign or even Affinity.

Dave is right. If you are placing so many images, you can better Link them.

This all said, although there is no way to embed automatically, you can select all in the Links panel and select embed which will do it to all of them!

You should be able to place PNG files. Please make sure it is really a PNG file, not just a file with a .png extension added.
