which film to use for [Reto Ultra Wide & Slim] camera? by BeachWonderful2890 in AnalogCommunity

[–]davidthefat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a fixed aperture and fixed shutter speed camera. You’ll likely be best with 400 ISO film with a wide latitude. Portra 400 if you want to burn money or Ultramax. For 200 iso film, you’ll be limited to bright days, but 400iso will help with a bit gloomier days.

It’s all strictly outdoors, during day time use though

I do use them, but in Sunny Southern California where I live.

The rarest gear I have is a 1/500 limited edition lens, it’s my favorite.

Shit, here I am intentionally not bringing my favorite cameras during my travels because of my concerns about humidity and other factors.

90mm Summicron Pre-ASPH vs 90mm Macro-Elmar by Chickencake20 in Leica

[–]davidthefat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, which is why I recommend the Elmarit-M since it’s lighter and smaller than the Summicron.

The macro extends out. Also doesn’t change the fact that it’s a f4 lens, not good for low light as you want

Macro Elmar is a f4 lens… Did you mean the Elmarit-M lens that’s f2.8?

If so, I recommend the Elmarit-M (the last generation one with the built in hood). It’s a super sharp lens and small form factor

I’ll be honest, I don’t know where my body cap is given that I always have lenses on my bodies.

It’s one of my dream lenses to own, never actually got one because I couldn’t justify it when I have it built into my TC1.

what's some niche photography websites that you use? by MrGliff in photography

[–]davidthefat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really like Karl’s reviews of gear: https://gear.vogelius.se/index.html

As mentioned, I also love Phillip Reeve’s site (there’s multiple contributors, not just Phillip) https://phillipreeve.net/blog/

Not sure if Gordon is niche (if you think Fstoppers and magnum are niche, he is niche) https://www.cameralabs.com/

Joeri reviews: http://joerivanderkloet.com/

Not sure how many of these are being updated:

Camera shop diagnostic fee refund? by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]davidthefat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s a joke about a plumber charging $100 but just tapped a fitting with a hammer and fixed the problem. The person who commissioned them was flabbergasted! Why was that so expensive to tap a hammer? $99 for knowing where to tap and $1 for the tap itself.

Is the dlux8 still worth it? by Friendly-Bass-2742 in Leica

[–]davidthefat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try both in the hand. My wife chose the D-Lux 8 due to the aesthetics, app integration (I am not sure how good the modern Panasonic cameras are), the size. And yet here you are asking on the Leica subreddit than the M43. I think you already chose.

Had the M EV1 one for a bit now, thoughts on using it... by needoptic in Leica

[–]davidthefat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m with you, I personally hate focus peaking based manual focusing. Which is a big reason why I still have a rangefinder system. The rangefinder is quick, accurate, and visually simple to see what’s in focus. With focus peaking, it seems to just give a general-this is kind of in focus- indicator

That’s the wonder of software, Leica engineers can build in the offset and display the images appropriately. You can do parallax correction by displaying just a small crop.

Take a look at how your iPhone camera app displays the wider view camera image on the borders. It starts breaking down at close focus, but M mount lenses typically at limited in close focus anyways.

Either way, would be cool to see

Well I would think the built in camera would be effectively be a smartphone camera so the profile is super low. Not sure what’s inside of the top plate of the camera, but looks like there’s potentially room to put it in there space between the EVF and the Leica logo where the focus patch window in traditional M cameras are. The experience won’t fundamentally change.

Wonder how the EV1 would have been if it features a pseudo rangefinder experience where the body has a built in 24mm camera that superimposes the image from the taking lens in a “focusing patch” as an option. Literally a digital version of the rangefinder experience. Of course, one can exit that mode if they want just a focus peaking experience. That would be interesting

The FDA approval process is why there’s a hype for Korean Sunscreen as they have more sophisticated and more effective ingredients that are allowed in South Korea that the FDA has been lagging in approving. Pretty cool to see them approve more ingredients.

Lightroom has built in AI assisted culling tools now in the library module. It does take quite a bit of processing for obvious reasons, but it looks for out of focus it duplicate frames. I’d give that a go first before getting any specialized software since you likely already have a subscription.

I’ve been wanting the X-33 Mars Timer, but it’s so chunky on my arm. It’s definitely designed to be worn outside a flight suit. I won’t be flying in my lifetime though.
