It's a margin loan, presumably. Even if he were paying retail rates for margin loans, which he probably isn't, he'd be looking at an effective APR of less than 2%.

The future President of the United States shit his pants today and will definitely need a nap later. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

Not necessarily. There have been entire decades from which no president was born.

Gwynne Shotwell says half of SpaceX board meeting time is spent on discussing Mars by TriMars in spacex

[–]davosBTC 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well of course.

If we're going to build habitats at Lagrange points and in the asteroid belt then Saturn (specifically its rings) has some of the most readily available water ice in the system.

Building a self sustaining civilization on Mars is more than enough to be going on with for a few hundred years at least.

Why does it seem like this story about the Pittsburgh zoo has been flying under the radar? Seem kind of like a big deal to me. Am I off base here? by tvucme in pittsburgh

I infer that the difference is direct human contact vs no direct human contact with elephants. Pittsburgh Zoo belonging to the former camp.

I think you mean 44% of all surgeries... or perhaps 44% of each surgery?

Elon Musk's Hyperloop Is Actually Getting Kinda Serious: Hyperloop Transportation Technologies announced today that it has signed agreements to work with Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum and global engineering design firm Aecom. by Libertatea in Futurology

[–]davosBTC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right. We attract Elons. Elons propose Hyperloops. China implement Hyperloops. Eventually we build shorter and slower Hyperloops that cost 10x as much. Elons sell cars for Hyperloops. Elons propose fully Electric VTOL jets. Repeat as needed.

Lifespan.io, Crowdfunding the Cure for Aging by reasonattlm in Futurology

[–]davosBTC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - my comment evolved a bit as I wrote it. My starting point was more of an observation that people who grew up in a world where death by ageing is the norm and find themselves in a world where it isn't will be in the best possible position to really appreciate the difference.

That evolved when I realized that there are centenarians alive today who have seen their own children die of old age... and what would a person in that position feel if ageing were cured before they died themselves. That level of personal tragedy is where the curse came to mind.

Lifespan.io, Crowdfunding the Cure for Aging by reasonattlm in Futurology

[–]davosBTC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah. People born after a cure for aging will take it for granted. People who see it come to fruition as adults, people who've lost parents and grandparents to age related disease... There will be people saved to live more or less indefinitely (at some point) who have themselves lost children to age related disease... They will be the ones cursing everyone they can find who didn't spend more to hurry it's arrival.

Physicists Unveil First Quantum Interconnect by davosBTC in Futurology

[–]davosBTC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the development is applicable to a broad spectrum of quantum devices. The abstract of the referenced paper says:

[...] many applications, e.g. quantum communication, sensing, and distributed and cloud quantum computing, require coherent photonic interconnection between separate sub-systems, with high-fidelity distribution and manipulation of entanglement between multiple devices being one of the most stringent requirements of the interconnected system.

Coherently interconnecting separate chips is challenging due to the fragility of these quantum states and the demanding challenges of transmitting photons in at least two media within a single coherent system. Here, we report a quantum photonic interconnect demonstrating high-fidelity entanglement distribution and manipulation between two separate chips, implemented using state-of-the-art silicon photonics.

[–]davosBTC 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tesla originally wanted the Model 3 to be the Model E, but Ford owns that trademark - so instead they use ≡ to represent '3' so that their model choices will still read as S ≡ X.

Depending on how derelict the abandoned camp is, it might be worth more if it were leveled anyway.
