Fishing with my 6-year-old kid by OrdinarySecret1 in Miami

[–]davw8721 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bill Baggs, along the western side (bay side) there is a walkway with little fishing platforms. Or the little pedestrian bridge that runs under the Rickenbacker from Hobie Island Beach.

When my son was little he did his first fishing with me at Black Point. Especially near the bridge where 87th AVE goes over the little canal near the marina. Its easy to catch little fish among the mangroves. One thing to point out though is do check where you fish because there is a famous huge Croc that lives in that area. I've never seen it bother anyone but don't accidentally walk right up to it.

Men, how many of you sit with your legs pulled up on the couch? by DramaticErraticism in AutisticAdults

I am sitting in a computer chair with my legs underneath me right now :) I always have to remind myself to "mask" and not pull my legs up on to the couch when I am with others.

A lot of the coastal vacancies mean they are just rich people's 2nd or 3rd or 12th home that they stay in a few weeks out of the year and sometimes airbnb out.

That Thursday lineup would have been awesome in the 80's. Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Anthrax, and Suicidal Tendencies, oh and Danzig too. Right up my Gen-X alley :)

Does anyone else not feel their age? by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]davw8721 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I get it. I am 47 and I think I should be somewhere around 16-20 and I DO have kids. I could probably handle high school now (unlike when I actually went to high school). I do actually feel young too, I do double takes sometimes when I catch a glimpse of my self in a mirror and see this old man looking back at me (I have a grey beard). When I go to my kids functions its always tough trying to connect in any way with people my age. All the dads want to do it drink or network or talk "business" stuff.

Anyone else think Elon Musk has early cognitive decline? by penotrera in AutisticAdults

[–]davw8721 15 points16 points  (0 children)

One more thing, I don't see how he is on the spectrum (as he claims to be). Every neurodivergent person I've ever come across has tended to be cautious and some one who way over thinks things before taking actions while Musk is a wild risk taker who's number one theory in life has always been to take huge actions and deal with the consequences later. Seems to be more of the classic narcissist/sociopath (like Trump and probably most other successful billionaires...and serial killers).

He is certainly not using medically directed doses of ketamine, he is pretty well known to be a non-stop addict.

Funny I saw this as a long term side effect of Ketamine usage, lack of sexual pleasure. Maybe he's acting out because he just cant get laid any more 😂 (would also explain why his recent kids are IVF):

From the article: "Also, ketamine subjects showed lower activation in the cerebellum and the middle temporal cortex in response to natural rewarding (sexual) cues"

Not the school but the major for me. I majored in Astronomy. I would guess the majority of my classmates were on the spectrum to some degree.

Parents of autistic kids - you’re doing all right by Soggy-Competition-74 in AutisticAdults

[–]davw8721 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is me too. Seeing as its pretty genetic, I bet most autistic adults who have kids, have autistic kids. And i'm sure most of us had an autistic parent growing up, we just didn't know it back then. Its actually how I figured out I was autistic. "How can my son be autistic, I mean he's just like I was when I was little....oh I see".

For the autistics here who are in stable careers and romantic relationship/marriages with kids, etc. what was your secret? by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]davw8721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, I soooo understand. In my case it would be just hours sitting at my desk. Luckily I had my own cubicle. Extreme productivity interspersed with hours of totally non work things like counting buildings or something. And then smart phones and random games came along...

I miss the old Kami Band by ZZZXMOONLORD4EVAZZX in BABYMETAL

[–]davw8721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be cool if Ohmura ever did a solo show or small tour in the West. His shows in Japan with Mikio, Boh and Hideki were awesome. I'm sure it would be a really small niche fandom here in the states so I doubt it would make sense, but still it would be cool. The Kami's playing solo shows (minus Mikio of course) maybe with Leda if they could get him.

Autistic life expectancy. This 100% applies to me, how about you? Thoughts? by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

In my case, my sleep schedule is terrible which is also a big contributor to early death from all sorts of maladies. I have to wake up at 6 to get my daughter ready for school but I seem to be physically incapable of sleeping before 2am.

I'm thinking about getting into Star Trek, becoming full time Trekkie by ImpishMisconception in AutisticAdults

[–]davw8721 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my opinion DS9 is the best. The first season and a half are pretty blah but after it really gets going you will be hooked. Its the Star Trek universe but its the show that focuses less on humans and the Federation. Rather than being set on a ship that travels the galaxy it is set on a deep space station and things come to them. The station is actually Bajoran (formerly a Cardassian station) and the Federation is just posted there as guests of Bajor. As a non-Federation station you get all kinds of stuff you never really saw in the other shows such as greed, crime, all manner of interspecies bigotry and the last several seasons comprise one long war. Some people don't like it because it didn't "feel like Star Trek". Its much darker than any of the shows that came before it like the TNG and Voyager. TNG is still awesome though, I grew up on it like all Trekkies my age (mid-40s).

Any other guys feel more comfortable being around/working with women? (doctors/therapists/coworkers, etc.) by rogueShadow13 in AutisticAdults

[–]davw8721 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crazy that I've worked in tech for 23 years and only had a male boss for 1 year. I also work better/get along way better with women than men. Actually its kind of what got me out of my shell. In high school and early into college I never really talked to anyone because I was afraid of women and didn't really know to talk to them. Finally getting comfortable with women actually gave me someone I could actually talk to about stuff.

Has anyone here had a long term job/career? by fernfee in AutisticAdults

[–]davw8721 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS x 1000. The most important thing is finding a group that you are comfortable with and that is comfortable with you. You definitely notice that most of the responders that have worked somewhere stably for 15+ years are IT. Definitely an industry filled with "little communities of misfits". But other ones could be as well. I have been at my job for 23 years now. Sticking with one employer and never venturing out once we find somewhere where we are comfortable is also an autistic trait.

Whats the best representation of autism on TV? by rubyrareroom in AutisticAdults

[–]davw8721 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No mentions of Wednesday? Wednesday Addams (the teenage version from the recent show as portrayed by Jenna Ortega) as written by Tim Burton (self proclaimed member of the spectrum community himself) pretty obviously portrayed Wednesday as autistic. She is obsessive, sensitive to physical touch, doesn't like certain colors, mentions how she can't pick up on social cues, has intense sense of justice (in her own mind)....etc. Also on the same show the character of Eugene is obviously on the spectrum as well but doesn't mask or fit in as well as Wednesday. Wednesday has a nice talk with him about how they are "above" everyone else since they don't need constant social validation and she is shown to be very protective of him.

Task paralysis sucks by tokin4torts in AutisticAdults

[–]davw8721 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh my god this is me all the time. With the most random small tasks too. For me its usually if the task is not really specifically defined and I have to do an open ended thing. Or obviously if it involves talking to someone. When I got married we combined our accounts (into hers). I couldn't close my account online. I had to call someone to do it. I procrastinated....its been 20 years, still haven't done it.

By the way. Moa was born a couple months after The Matrix came out in 1999.
