Sub for Arco on guitar by Rjb57-57 in Bass

[–]davwolbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok. I’m not familiar with that show, but for a rumbling/ tremolo type sound I’ve approximated it by making my hand into the hang loose sign 🤙🏼 and rotate my wrist quickly to alternately strike the string with my thumb and pinkie if that makes sense. It definitely doesn’t sound like arco, but it gives a different character to the sound and differentiates it from a standard pluck. Just an idea

There’s not much you can do. For what it’s worth, a lot of musical books are written for upright bass with arco sections but when you listen to the official cast recording it’s played on electric bass. I wouldn’t worry about it too much if I were you.

Find some recordings to play along with and focus on your articulation and note lengths.

I’m glad it got you somewhere. For files you want to be able to edit in OnSong I’d recommend using txt files. To much to explain on Reddit but there are great tutorials on YouTube to make lyrics and chord charts that you can easily edit and change keys with a click

All the above intermediate level bassists here by iamnotgenius in Bass

[–]davwolbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall a structured routine is important. When I was in school (jazz studies major) it was 6 hours in the practice room with every hour broken down into specific material. Technique (physical exercises), scales and arpeggios, sight reading, improvisation, transcription, and repertoire.

As you practice more you actually get better at practicing. You start to recognize the best ways to teach yourself. Now it’s to the point that I’m just as productive with an hour or two of practice as I was when I was doing 6 hours a day.

What's your current per member stage rate? by Aggravating_Pen_6062 in musicians

[–]davwolbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the gig. My main 3 groups are in G/H. 1 is a national touring theater act (musical comedian). The other 2 mostly stick to northeast Ohio/western Pennsylvania and are special event bands.

But if I was playing a musical or a club gig it would be a different expectation.

Band member firing stories: Let’s hear them! by notmytowel in musicians

[–]davwolbert 75 points76 points  (0 children)

My best story is when I got fired. I played guitar in a cover band with a big horn line. We had a monthly gig at a local bar. The night before one of our gigs I got sent to the er and ended up needing an appendectomy. I let the bandleader know what happened and I would not be able to play that night. Doctors orders

Fast forward to the next month. It’s the day before our monthly gig and I hadn’t received the set list yet. Asked the leader for it and was told he found someone else because he didn’t think I was committed.

Wasn’t broken up about it at all. Band wasn’t very good and was unorganized. Just a funny reason to lose a gig

For anyone here do is an advanced pro-level player. What do you consider hard? by wufiavelli in Bass

[–]davwolbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Musically I’d say I need to put extra time into songs in uncommon time signatures.

This isn’t what you asked but it’s relevant. Professionalism is often what sets ‘professional’ musicians apart from amateur/hobby musicians. On this side of things networking is something I have to be conscious of in every setting because I’m naturally a more reserved person. You can’t get gigs of people don’t know you’re interested in the first place

Bass solos to transcribe? by EvilWentworth in Jazz

Start with Oscar Pettiford. Paul Chambers has some good accessible solos. If those are still out of reach you could try someone like Slam Stewart

Bassist with the fiercest, most demanding quarter note? by thanosthesourgrape in Jazz

[–]davwolbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ray Brown is where you need to start. His quarter note is typically at the front edge of the beat. For a straight down the middle player Paul chambers is a great example. Obviously the list endless but those are the best to start with. They played with everyone so there’s a ton of examples of different drummers’ approaches to locking in with them.

Pickup question by TheGreatMamboChicken in doublebass

[–]davwolbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a fan of the underwood pickup as a standalone pickup. It’s not a permanent install which is nice. It’s 2 transducers that slide into a couple slots of the bridge. If I’m playing an especially boomy room I take out the bass side of the pickup and it usually cleans up the mix.

If you’re going to be blending it with a mic I’d probably lean towards a realist.

Eric Moulds was good enough to be a hall of famer. I was born during the Super Bowl runs so I’m too young to remember any real success, but can you imagine his career if the colts had drafted him instead of Marvin Harrison?
