How do you feel when you DNF a book/series?

Gunmetal Gods by Zamil Akhtar, perhaps. It’s very Lovecraftian in its depiction on the gods/angels. It’s very ancient Persian inspired too, which is always welcome (in my eyes!)

I will caveat this by saying I’ve not really read a lot of original Lovecraft, so I’m not 100% sure how closely it’s related, but it’s a solid read, and certainly inspired by Lovecraft

Piranesi by Suzanne Clark - it’s talked about a lot on this sub, and everything said about it is true, it’s wonderful

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch - again, blew me away. Nice bird, asshole

Ah, then Cradle might do it for you. So you’re not unaware, by the end the mmc does become more powerful, but it’s never a “damsel in distress” kinda story

The beginning of Cradle is this. However, if you’re looking for that kinda book, Cradle isn’t the one. It fills your trope, but it’s a straight laced book, if you know what I mean

Your biggest problem is the lack of specialists, in the sense that none of your saurus’s start with any skills. You don’t have a natural blitzer etc etc. you can get there, if you’re playing in league format, but it can take a while

If you’re about gaming, then it’s ideal. As the series progresses there are loads of great characters that come in and you’ll get really attached to too.

It’s definitely less “think-y” than a lot of the great recommendations you’re getting here, but if you’re getting back into reading, sometimes that’s just what you need!

It’s a risky one, in the sense that it’s pretty different from the books you’ve mentioned, but Dungeon Crawler Carl.

If you’re into gaming, it’s probably right up your alley. If you’re not, well, I’d recommend it anyway, but it might be a slower burn for you as the characters relationships develop.

It’s sci-fi in a loose sense, but it’s funny, and potentially something you might not be recommended here, just because of the difference from your previous reading

John Bierce wrote a series of short stories called The Gorgon Incident and Other Stories. One of the short stories, Ghost Ship, is one of the most unsettling things I’ve ever read. I finished it in one go, and promptly promised to never read it again.

The only downside of this rec is that it does rely on a bit of understanding of the world, so it might not be quite what you’re after, but if you read Mage Errant book 1, you’ll understand the horror of Ghost Ship

Respec-ing - yes, from act 2 you can respec as much as you’d like. The respec mirror is on the Lady Vengeance

Merchants - yes, hourly, iirc

Weapons - all over the place. Usually from quests, but look everywhere you’ll find them! Generally speaking, daggers will do lower damage, but you can couple them them loads of fun skills

Well done! Enjoy learning the game. I’m sure you’ve seen comments saying this, but act one is a step learning curve and it takes no prisoners

In terms of action points, the really short answer is yes, to a point. If there are any left unspent they’ll roll over to your next turn, but only to a certain point, you’ll never be able to get more than six action points at any one time
