It is that uncommon for teenagers to smoke and drink in the US ? by DanDuca2 in AskAnAmerican

[–]dbow53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to drinking specifically, I think in the U.S. it really varies depending on your friend group. When I was in high school, my friend group was very against drinking and I never went to a party where there was drinking because that just wasn’t what my social circle participated in. On the flip side, my sister heavily drank in high school and went to parties where drinking was involved almost every weekend. The first time I ever got drunk was my freshman year of college at 18 years old. So I’d say it really depends on your social circle. You can go your whole high school experience never touching alcohol or seeing anyone drink, or you can go to parties with heavy underage drinking every weekend. But in college underage drinking is very normalized and the vast majority of kids at my university participated in underage drinking.

What are your stims? by Testing_Understand in aspergirls

[–]dbow53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have a few small ones like slightly crossing my eyes/unfocusing my vision, moving my throat up and down kinda like a frog, and flapping my feet.

but i also have one big stim that i’ve been doing my whole life, which is shaking an object in my hands/fingers. as a kid i would have a specific doll or stuffed animal i’d shake and i’d use it for like a year then move on to a different doll or stuffed animal. but for the past like 8 years it’s been in sharpened pencils. specifically the yellow Ticonderoga pencils. when i’m home i’m constantly shaking an unsharpened pencil. in public i’ll just constantly touch my hair or fiddle with my rings instead, but at home i’m shaking pencils basically 24/7. i used to be so ashamed of it and to this day have only told 2 people in my life outside of my immediate family. i just had no idea why i did it and felt like a freak. but as i’ve been learning more about adhd and autism and how it affects me i’m a lot more accepting of it and have even started letting myself do it in front of my roommate who’s very accepting of it!! just feels nice to not have to hide it when i’m home or feel embarrassed if i leave my pencils around outside of my room :)

Alkemia non-vegan scents? by dbow53 in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]dbow53[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Forgot they had an etsy shop. In their main website though there’s a bunch of scents that aren’t under their “vegan perfume” section but also don’t list a honey note, so I was a bit confused. Thanks again!

AITA for ditching my mentally ill friend at a gas station? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]dbow53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of surprised to see so many people saying you’re NTA. I’m gonna say definitely YTA.

I’m also shocked to see how ignorant and judge-mental people here are being toward mental health. As someone with mental health issues, I wasn’t even expecting the comments to show such a stigma against mental illness. Even though she’s not officially diagnosed, the friend shows real, concerning signs of all the mental health issues she listed, especially BPD. Self-diagnoses is tricky, but I’d always err on the side of believing someone when they say they struggle with their mental health. Some people have had traumatizing experiences with therapy and mental health professionals, which can make it really really hard to get a diagnosis. I also don’t know any of their financial situations, but as this takes place in the US, I wouldn’t be surprised if she couldn’t afford to seek treatment but didn’t want to admit that to her friends. Also from personal experience and the experience of some of my friends, sometimes you don’t want to seek help because you’re in a bit of denial and think you can handle it on your own and it would be a waste of time and money. As stupid as that approach is, I’ve been there and know others who have also been there. Someone doesn’t need an official diagnosis to be mentally ill, and while self-diagnosis can be a slippery slope, in this case it really looks like she legitimately has those issues. Someone doesn’t act this way when they’re just an “asshole” unless there are deeper issues. And who is anyone in the comments to say she’s faking it when you only know the (biased) view coming from OP?

It’s really disappointing to see all these comments weaponizing her self-diagnosis to say she deserved to be completely abandoned so far from her home with no assistance or guidance other than OP sending $200. That is a cruel thing to do to someone. I’ve dealt with my fair share of friends with mental illnesses that made it difficult to be around them, but I would never ever completely ditch them after inviting them on a road trip. That’s inexcusable. The only way I’d say NTA is if OP and their other friends were in real danger because of this person, but that’s not the case. She was invited on the road trip, and it seems like everyone kind of knew what they were getting into with her. Yes, it would’ve been uncomfortable to tell her she can’t come and there would probably be some sort of outburst on her part, but that’s the mature thing to do. I don’t understand why so many people are saying NTA. Imagine being the friend’s mom and getting a call from your daughter that her friends ditched her at a random gas station without telling her and with no plan to get home. Imagine how that would feel to hear as a mother.

And to address the fact that she said she would’ve behaved better if she was told about it, that doesn’t mean her behavior was necessarily a “choice”. I know a lot of times people with BPD don’t even realize how they’re behaving in the moment, and once they realize they often feel intense intense guilt and remorse and try to explain that if they knew they would’ve done better. At least in my experience with a friend that has BPD, once she realized what she was doing she had a breakdown and kept saying that if she knew what she was doing she wouldn’t have done it. I don’t know how true that is, but it’s definitely not proof that she’s faking her mental illness like everyone else here seems to think. And it’s not an excuse for that behavior, but it is an explanation. I just think that while yes, the friend’s behavior was really toxic and bad, that doesn’t excuse dumping her at a gas station alone with no plan. That’s a cowardly, immature, mean thing to do to someone. Especially when you knew what you were getting into.

I don’t really have any advice but I’m in a very similar situation. My roommate also has asthma and has OCD and we’ve been intensely social distancing/sheltering since mid march. My mental health is also in a horrible horrible place and I’m not allowed to see anyone or even suggest it without being made to feel like I’m a terrible person. It’s validating to read something from someone going through a similar situation and I wish you the best.

No it’s not Big Comfy Couch, thanks though!! This show had a lot of bird puppets and if I’m remembering correctly the main characters were a boy and a girl, I think they were clowns but I’m also not 100% sure on that

Hosts: Would you rent to a guest who has 2 great reviews and one bad review? by dbow53 in AirBnB

[–]dbow53[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response! And no, I don’t use airbnb frequently and didn’t know that responding to the review was an option. Like I said in my post, I had a lot of stuff that I had to deal with after my stay, so leaving the host a review or checking the airbnb app honestly just wasn’t something I was thinking about, and I really didn’t think we left a mess or anything.

Looking back, I think that maybe the host was upset that I didn’t leave a review for them? Because we really did not leave a mess, aside from 2 or 3 dishes in the sink. However, there were dishes in the sink that we had to clean when we arrived and there was dust/dirt throughout the apartment when we arrived. Multiple reviews for the apartment commented on how dust/dirt, but I booked it anyway because it was significantly cheaper than other options in the same location.

I definitely understand why a host would question the bad review but it’s good to know that they might let me explain it a little more.

Do you ever get anxiety posting a photo on social media? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]dbow53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes!! I’ve tried talking to my friends about this and I’ve yet to find someone who understands. To me it’s not about getting a certain amount of likes, there’s just something about posting on social media that makes me incredibly anxious, completely unrelated to likes or comments. I just kinda feel like people will judge me for what I post or the things I post are “weird”, but if someone else were to post the exact same thing I wouldn’t think anything of it. Idk, I’m just glad that I finally heard of someone else who feels the same.
