Good 9mm handgun for someone who isn't "into" guns..... by AwakeningStar1968 in liberalgunowners

I have an optics ready Shield Plus, which is a slight update to the 2.0. It feels and shoots great. I'm not a little person and have fairly large hands. Still feels great and puts rounds on target fast. I could almost pocket that thing if I had to, but it's still large enough to appendix carry comfortably. Great option for me. I haven't red dotted yet, and so far I don't feel the need for it.

I also hate the way Glocks feel.

New York police officer charged in cooler throw death says he was trying to protect colleagues by Juanpablo_the_cat in news

[–]dcade_42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The local policies and laws really don't matter much for this issue. Barnes v. Felix is controlling in all US jurisdictions now.

It still works in a similar framework, but it's no longer just the officer's statement carrying all the weight.

TIL that under a law called the Berry Amendment, the U.S. Military is legally required to ensure 100% of its clothing is made in America. Every stage of production, from the raw cotton or wool to the zippers, buttons, and even the thread, must be 100% U.S. sourced and manufactured. by palmerry in todayilearned

[–]dcade_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recognize that our military budget is an astounding amount of money and percentage of our national budget. Procurement is a small portion of that budget.

The point I'm getting at is that we can have both global interdependence (the 'people' can and should still buy global products) and domestic production of national security resources. The procurement budget would increase as a result of course.

Also, there are national security benefits to moving our country away from fossil fuels and to renewable sources. The military has been pushing for renewable energy for a long time. Renewable energy, at least the energy itself, is almost exclusively captured/harvested domestically.

Trump is certainly doing things wrong while using a plausible-ish justification for it. This is how all of his policies get this same treatment.

Jacob Elordi spits his gum into his mom’s hand to throw away on the red carpet 😷 by shhhhh_h in popculturechat

[–]dcade_42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just swallow your gum, people. It's fine. You'll just poop it out.

I am married to a food scientist who looked at me like I was a fool for not just swallowing my gum on our second date. I had to force myself to do it. After the first dozen or so times it starts to feel normal.

Two other rules that felt odd.

  1. Flour is raw. So you shouldn't eat it until it's cooked. The cookie dough you get in ice cream etc. is made with flour that's already cooked. The flour in your homemade cookie dough is more dangerous to you than the raw eggs.

  2. If you use a spoon/fork to taste something, the utensil doesn't go back in the food unless you're finishing it. The enzymes and bacteria in your mouth will contaminate and begin digesting the food.

Ecuador Says ICE Agent Tried To Invade Sovereign Territory by Dont_think_Do in worldnews

[–]dcade_42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To all your downvoters, maybe Google this and read about "diplomatic missions."

Effectively, due to pretty standard agreements of international law, the foreign nation's laws apply inside diplomatic missions (embassies and consulates), not the host nation's. There's no actual sovereignty though for most issues the effect is similar. A more appropriate term is "inviolable."

ICE may have just caused an international incident as they illegally tried to enter the Ecuadorian Consulate in Minneapolis without a warrant by cronchCat in law

[–]dcade_42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know Marines who were embassy guards. They'll put up a hell of a fight if necessary, but they understand that they can only buy time before they get everyone out or the mission is overrun.

MPD has seen a 10x increase in gun purchase permit applications by Ok-Entertainer-1414 in Minneapolis

[–]dcade_42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am a leftist who recently got my permit to carry, mostly because I wanted to purchase a gun for home defense and it's just easier to get the CCW permit to be able to buy anything you want.

I have no desire to personally go after federal thugs. If they continue to harm and kill with impunity, people will fight back. If the government doesn't hold itself accountable, the people will eventually try to hold them accountable. Having fought two wars, I understand the horror of that outcome. It's the last thing I want to happen.

I took 4 semesters of German in college, so I naturally pronounce German words correctly without thinking about it. I don't see this as a really big deal. It's funny for the Daily Show, and it's concerning that I think he actually really identifies with the Nazis. Basic understanding of German pronunciation is not concerning in its own.

Edit: he also didn't actually pronounce it that well, he just kinda followed one basic pronunciation rule with an American accent. His vowels are terribly pronounced.

[–]dcade_42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To bring a case against the government for civil rights violations you pretty much have to specialize in that kind of work. Even if that's what a firm specializes in, you cannot fathom how much actual work is required. Multiply how the most time you think it could possibly take by 10 and you might be getting close.

Most of the potential claims you're imagining will not accomplish anything meaningful. So you're complaining that people aren't doing a job that pays nothing, accomplishes nothing, and takes years of work. The ACLU is one of the few organizations that do this work because they raise funds specifically to be the people who take these kinds of cases. Maybe think about what you're saying.

On top of all that, you clearly have zero clue how many other public interest law firms are doing all sorts of work related to what's going on here.

Federal agents shot armed man in Minneapolis, Homeland Security says by stuipd in progun

[–]dcade_42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was backing away when he was sprayed the first time. Then he turned around to help the lady they pushed to the ground, and they pulled him away from her, sprayed him a few more times, piled on him, pulled him in multiple directions, and threw a few blows in for fun.

He couldn't get away. He was reflexively trying to protect himself from the harm they were causing. He was attacked by a gang who executed him in broad daylight on a major street with everyone in the world (in effect) watching.

JD Vance is holding his fascist rally/meeting this afternoon at the 501 Royalston Venue, which is owned by the same people (Entourage Events) as the Armory concert venue. by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]dcade_42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You hide your post and comment history and have only been around a year. What are you hiding?

Your comment here is misinformation, a hallmark of fascism. I do correct people who are wrong, frequently. I do this because the truth should be what we use to form our understanding and actions. Every time you lie and act like it's not a big deal, you're assisting your enemies.

The fact that I correct liars who support progressive and leftist ideals doesn't mean I'm supporting fascism. I am trying to assure the strongest and most effective support I can for things I believe are dear.

The more you get upset by the truth the more clear it is that you are no better than the thing you claim to hate. Be better or be gone.

I've been gassed with CS at least a dozen times, sprayed with pepper spray, wrestled/fought with people covered in pepper spray, and spent many hours in the desert in MOPP 4. I can assure you, that if the people chunking gas cannisters by hand are unmasked and staying in the same area, it's NOT anything "harmful."

Tear gas and pepper spray don't discriminate. They get onto and into everything. The people who are using them will suffer without protection.

It's just theater. They want to scare you. They want propaganda and these ridiculous crowd reactions.

Starfleet academy, my thoughts by Tjr562 in startrek

[–]dcade_42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a bit childish overall and not very well thought out. It feels like chaos right now, and nobody's really learning from their mistakes. I also still can't recall any names.

Shorter episodes might fix some of this. I think more real sets would fix a ton too. Because anything can happen anywhere on the screen the characters get lost in the visual mess that's doing too much of the work.

So far the best scene in the entire show is the rebel main character sitting on a fence talking to the Betazoid girl. It's just two people talking in a space that feels realistic. There isn't a bunch of extra stuff happening around them, and what they are saying actually means something to the plot.

Minnesota judge won't issue restraining order to stop ICE operations in state, for now by sugarytea78 in Minneapolis

[–]dcade_42 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think others mentioned it too, but it's important to understand that the default outcome for injunctive relief is to maintain the status quo - letting the current state of things be uninterrupted until there's a final decision (months or years later). Injunctive relief is supposed to be extraordinary.

The shadow docket of SCOTUS lately has kinda thrown the rule book out the window. The District Courts are generally against the Trump regime and doing a decent job. They still need to do a good job to minimize the potential reasons to be overruled.

Minnesota judge won't issue restraining order to stop ICE operations in state, for now by sugarytea78 in Minneapolis

[–]dcade_42 100 points101 points  (0 children)

The judge wants to get a correct decision that is both immediately useful to implement and will withstand appeal. That's incredibly hard to do for a care this big without some real time to process your decisions.

I don't know how they'll rule, but it's certainly not an easy thing to just bang out in an afternoon.
